Politics is the biggest stumbling block of a successful Irish only bid.

Its a competition which is going to come to these islands once in every 3 or 4 competitions max from now on, as South Africa and Australia are soon going to consider it their 'turn' again whilst USA/Canada and Italy are able to make a good case for getting their first shot at it.

So the IRB representatives from Scotland, Wales (and possibly England and France) would only support a bid if it was a joint bid, as a sole Irish event would effectively mean they wouldn't be host for 30+ years.

Though a joint bid would negate the need for Croke Pk, as Ireland would then only need the Aviva, Thomond, Ravenhill and one other (RDS?) as the Millenium is the obvious choice for a semi and the final.

If we are the primary hosts of a joint bid all we really need Croke park for is the semis and final. Hardly a massive stumbling block imo. Two weekends worth ~€4million to the GAA and even more to the Irish economy.

It could certainly be done with Wales and Scotland hosting a group each and us hosting two groups. We should try very hard to leave the french and english out of it.

I read in the papers today that the increased mortgage interest relief is worth 5k a year but I thought the limits were now €6k in interest for a couple so 25% of that would be €1500p.a. Perhaps I'm confusing myself with the sop to the negative equity peeps which is retarded in the extreme.

Personally I feel sorry for anyone who bought in Janaury 2009 believing the VIs that things were about to bounce back. Proper fucked they are. No backhanders from the govt, a nice chunk of negative equity and a standard variable mortgage to contend with. Future buyers beware....

Got a taxi this morning cos I was way late for work. When he stopped the taxi, I had the money ready to pay, but when he pressed the button to stop the meter the fare went up by a euro. Am I right in thinking he ripped me off? He picked me up off the street and it was just me so can't imagine there'd be any extra charges.

Probably worth <5% of your total spend on a house (capital plus interest over the lifetime of a mortgage) so it could be wiped out with three months worth of market falls. Business people are not the bad guys. They take all the risk when they start a business and deserve their rewards yet they are so often vilified for doing so. I'm not saying that you're doing this by the way but it is a common tactic of certain groups to speak about employers as exploiters or glutinous villains yet the HUGE HUGE majority of Irish companies are small to medium enterprises owned and operated by families for the most part. They are the real engine of local employment in particular and making things harder for them is counter productive to the point of being ridiculous. We need to make it as easy for them to do business as possible rather than continually ask them to carry the can for social benefit dependent people (for whatever reason, good or bad) when they themselves qualify for no social welfare payments despite paying into the social welfare system for their entire lives.

There is a long and tedious point to be made but in a nutshell there isn't really much difference between the guy who opens a take away and Alan Sugar. All sorts of twists in circumstances and luck play a much bigger role than personality in the level of success achieved. If it was just down to entrepreneurship and willingness to work hard then Uganda would be the richest country on the planet. Its all about the social contract, how much those who are willing and able to work hard are willing to pay for the bureaucracy that provides part of the infrastructure that allows them to do business and to provide a level of support for those who are unable to work.

If there was reckless trading then the Office of the Director of Corporate enforcement has a job to do. Are they much different then other entrepreneurs who went bust without paying pension contributions or taxes??

I think it's easy for a judge to look down smugly on what they did given the nature of the expenditures in their business but trying to appear sucessful to attract sucess was fundamental to their business model.

Btw all of their old staff are still working for them and they seem to run a good operation. We do have limited liability for companies for a reason....
