I see depressant getting fired around loads with regards to alcohol. Someone with a better understanding may clarify further or maybe I am completely wrong.

From my understanding the depressant link is used to describe its effect on your system not your mood. Alcohol is a drug which slows down or depresses the activity of the central nervous system and the messages going between the brain and the body. It isn't actually something which makes you depressed.

I wouldn't agree with this. If alcohol didn't affect someone's mood then people wouldn't become more relaxed, chatty, confident, aggressive, emotional etc when they drink it. It just affects different people in different ways.

Think the way they were using it was appropriate, its got pretty serious neurotoxic effects. Apparently its still up for debate whether it strictly causes depression but it would seem that it fucks up your brain pretty badly if abused so I don't think it'd be too surprising if it did in fact cause depression.

The way it was being used by Tipp was in that of course it causes depression sure it's a depressant which is just as silly as calling it a 'confident' because it makes you confident. The point is that alcohol does not necessarily make you depressed. The use of depressant in relation to alcohol has another meaning when talked about in that way.

Heavy links obviously exist between depression and alcohol. Studies have shown that long term heavy abuse can cause imbalance in the serotonergic system which regulates mood. That's quite a complex area because still much isn't understood with the role it plays in depression. Also the question in those studies is if some people just born with a chemical imbalance that makes them more likely to become heavy drinkers at some point in their lives or if damage to the serotonergic system is caused because of excessive drinking.

The fact that it may cause depression when abused has nothing to do with it being a depressant. That refers to physical and mental relaxation/depression and not emotional depression. It's entirely different.

Stimulants have the opposite effect. Yet stimulant abuse can also lead to emotional depression.

I can not understand how anyone can drink 10/11 pints and drink anything on top of it. I am more happy to have a couple of drinks on an odd occasion that get plastered and forget half the night. I hate seeing really drunk people making an ass of themselves.

I had my hen last weekend and Jules will back me up when I say that I was not drunk, had a ball with a few glasses of champagne and a couple of glasses of cider. I was up at 9.00am and felt great.

Years ago when I went out (pre FD days) I would end up drinking a few glasses of cider and then a few shots. I would wake in the morning feeling a bit icky. I would risk breakfast and end up puking every five minutes until about 5.00pm. It was horrendous and I am glad I all but gave drinking and only do it a couple of times a year and just a few.

Now, that's all we can expect from funded athletes. Derval O' Rourke just ran her best time of the season, and one of her best times of the last couple of years when it mattered the absolute most.

Very tough heat, and she'll need to go better again in the semis - but 12.91 should see her through.

Looking at the wimmins 10m air rifle, pretty insane how close to perfection they are.

Current leader in the mens trap has shot 4 perfect rounds and is 100 from 100. Derek Burnett only missed 5 traps in his opening 3 rounds and is down in 23rd, if he finishes with 2 perfect rounds he still wont qualify for the final, insanely high standard

The 800m athletes being interviewed trackside seem much more composed and recovered than 100 - 400m athletes have been immediately after their events. Why is that? Surely every event should entail the same max type effort?
