there's a few Republicans who must be kicking themselves that they decided to hold off for 2016; this race was there for the taking. Romney was such an awful candidate and yet made a reasonable run at it.

Senate and house elections next year. If the Democrats can win both houses it will be because of Dems getting elected on the back of special interest group support. The candidates that get elected on platforms that win this support may actually be pushing Obama out of his comfort zone in the opposite direction that pandering to a republican controlled house/senate would.
Note, I know it's all centre right in the grand scheme of things, but I think my point stands.

Romney was the best the party could put forward IMO. I think the whole world has been genuinely surprised at how well he has done, given that over a year ago it looked like the party had no viable candidates. Until they drop the Tea Party nutjobs completely, they won't get a man in the Whitehouse. That will require a seriously charismatic leader. Paul Ryan might be the man to do it, but he's a bit young right now for their tastes.

On the Mitts nomination thing it is a much tougher job to be the republican. You have to start off on the right to get the loons to give you the nomination and then readjust to being center right which is where most American voters sit.
It is quite a massive shunt across and really fucks your credibility from the start. Basically though they cannot pick the most electable (center right candidate) as he wont get the nomination or the most popular amongst the party purist as they wont have a notion in the main event. They will always end up with something in between which will not work.
The republicans rather than spending their money on their own elections should spend it on some center center or lefty party to erode the democratic voter base.
They are pretty much guaranteed 40 odd percent same as the democrats at the moment which is why this swing state situation has arisen. Cut their base and even if you don't take it at least they don't have it and you gt over the line.

when the chinese get a second party and democratic elections I think it will be big news and we all love to watch the cheating that goes on in Russia. The results are already set but some brilliant cheating that would not be out of place in FIFA.
