I want to learn to programme but have no idea where to start. I'll be entirely teaching my self so if anyone here could recommend some good beginners e-books, or websites/programmes it'd be much appreciated.

We could try to figure out what you want to do and why, mostly I say to people who ask this question that if you wanted to do it you would probably be doing it already.

Before you even do that though you should understand the basics how a computer works what happens in registers the different types of memory and how they are accessed.

To be honest I dont really want to "do" anything. I've no particular reason other than I'm curious about it.

Im not delusional enough to think that this affords me any sort of edge or advantage in todays (or the short-medium term) jobs market so I figure since I've some sort of curiousity for programming and a small interest in it, why not have a look into it and see if I can at least try make it into some kind of discernable skill.

I dont have time to do a course in it as Im off to Oz travelling soon but something to read/workthrough in any down time I have would be cool.

Learn a database package like Access(or modern equivalent) and some SQL imo

Yep, ages ago when it was three handed. Bit of an odd deal as Nick had half the chips in play but they all seemed very happy about it so what do I know?

Noel Hayes comes over a couple of minutes later to say they had chopped it up wrong and there was 10k left.

I believe they gave some of that to the dealers. Which was a nice gesture.

Looking for some travel advice, can't make up my mind

I'm thinking of heading away for 4-5 days in the middle of November but can't decide where to go. Couple of options are

1)New York
2)London
3)Barcelona

Which one would be the BBV's choice and what would you do in each location?

Right then, I'm 90% sure I'm going to New York. I dropped into American Holidays and they quoted me over €1000 for 5 nights in NYC which seems very expensive.

A friend recommended The Edison and I had a quick check on line and it looks ok an is defo cheaper than what I was quoted in AH.

Anybody with any other good hotel recommendations?

Should get it a bit cheaper if you book directly have a look at flight and hotel deals as i am near certain i got over there for €700 for the same period.

good advice but Access is not a prestige package at all.
Oracle, MSSQQL, MySQL, DB2 are all better options.
A BI package is also a plus, COGNOS, InPromptu etc

tbh I was not sure which database package to recommend and thought Access was a good one to learn the basics on?
+was sure someone would come on and rec a better one

I have been saying it's some how rigged for a long time but my theory is based on the fact that if you do a quick pick say of two lines , 9/10 times you will get at least one number on both lines. I know this wont gaurentee no winner but it just reduces the chances. If you've got 3 on both your lines and 3 doesn't come out your lines are dead. Coupled with the OP's theory it would be very easy to rig.

I'm supposed to be going to Spain (from the UK) in two weeks time but just realised my passport is expired. Rang the Irish Embassy in London, and they said they can't fast track applications at the moment and it's 6 weeks to get a passport.

My Irish driving license says that I was born in Ireland, would this be good enough as proof of nationality to travel within the EU?

you are a curse to me 72, last two games I played with you I more or less bubbled. I enjoyed that 200 game, only dogged one person the whole tourny and that was the A8 call agianst my K 10 so not a huge one. I just need a run average card in the latter stages mo.
