Now in our modern world, we have societies changing at what is, in historical terms, breakneck pace. For many people, this then triggers the above feelings. I think it's perfectly normal for people to have these feelings - especially those who may not have been as exposed to multiculturalism, may not have travelled as much themselves, may not be as well educated etc. And so it's a process to try and help them overcome these feelings. I don't think anyone should be demonized for having these doubts and fears, or castigated as 'ignorant'. Such a reaction will typically only polarize.
What's absolutely unacceptable is those who seek to whip up these feelings to provoke extremism and violence. They're the ones to crack down on hard. Luckily, it's pretty much a crackpot fringe here in Ireland.
