Personally, I done whatever homework during the year but didn't do extra hours until the end of term (I was in boarding school so we had assigned study hours - about 2.5 a night IIRC).
Either way, the way the LC is set up is not a good grounding for college. Two vastly different methods of both learning and examining in my experience.

Life advice please BBV!
I lurk here a fair bit and don't really post much but was reading through all the LC talk and it got me thinking about what I should do.
I never did the leaving. Dropped out around Xmas of 6th year probably would've been around average without much work so 400-460 points I'd guess. I dropped out because I didn't have time for school and was going to be away for the actual exams due to chasing a sports dream which involved travelling the world basically.
Had an opportunity that was once in a lifetime and felt I could always go back to school so I don't really regret dropping out.
That was 2 years ago now and I'm now 20. Still involved but not had as much success as expected or I could be arrogant and say deserved
So pretty much now there's very few options left after this year is over. Still pushing hard for that and obviously not giving up. There's not a single course I can think of that I would have any interest in doing at the minute.
So what would be the general consensus on trying to get a leaving just to have one? Is the age for 'mature students' 24 which would I be right in saying you wouldn't need a LC if you were to become one? This thought just came to me as I was writing this.
I'm not even sure what I'm looking to be told here just feeling pretty confused and considering going back to school.
Cheers

Personally think its awful sending a 12 year old away for a couple of months at a time.

As painful as it may seem it's probably best to just finish off the leaving, and trying to think where you go from there should you not fulfill your sporting ambitions.

I hated school and the LC, think i only got 410 or something. I still have a reoccuring nightmare that for some reason i have to go back and sit the LC exams.
I know a good few guys who done excellent in there LC but did not have an ounce of common sense in the outside world, put them in a real life situation and they are fvking clueless.
My point is you can have all the super LC results but when it comes to a career if you don't have some common sense and be street wise you will get swallowed up.

The sport is racing cars. Mostly in Japan and the rest of Asia.
About the institute I actually went there for 6th year before I dropped out. Pretty much despised the place though. At that stage I was bearly in school. Think I missed the first month and a half of the year. Made a really last minute decision to go there thinking it's the sort of place that would give you notes that you could put in the work to learn.
That was until I saw the exam timetable and realised I was away for all them so dropped out.

If you have no life plan or idea of what you'd like to do, and you wouldn't be giving up a job etc..., then going back to do the leaving wouldn't hurt, while doing it might give you the chance to think what you'd like to do afterwards college or job wise.
It may be that the sports opportunity you're currently pursuing would be of interest to you career wise, and that you would be able to do a course to train others in it [or be a coach or whatever], and maybe you could do that course without a leaving cert just simply based on your experience over the last 2 years.
The mature student thing is grand, but its not a great idea to wait until you're 23 and then assume you'll get a place - many courses limit the number of mature students they take to 5 out of 100 etc..., so you shouldn't rely solely on that.
On other hand, doing LC and going to College will give you plenty time to figure out what you want to do with your life, College is great crack [at a minimum you'll get laid with an ease and frequency that you'll only again experience if you become a rock star or win an olympic medal or whatever], its a good mixture of personality building and learning.
Don't think the BBV is a great place to be asking this kind of thing tbh, the answers have to come from within yourself.
Good luck with figuring it all out!!1Last edited by Lplated; 15-08-12, 16:54.

Nothing like fast and the furious would be more like Formula 1 styled cars. Just 2 levels below F1 at the minute. Been at it for around 11 years. The last 2 being in Japan with 1 year in Asia before that after starting in Europe.
I thought this would be a good place to ask because there seems to be a lot of smart people from many different areas on here. Quite interesting to get a few different opinions from all my friends who I've known for years who would just say 'keep racing it's cool'

A future employer will wonder why your CV is missing a leaving cert result and it's something that should be on your CV for the first job out of college (actually I only recently removed it from mine along with results from all my under-grad modules).May you live in interesting times!

But, just thought in the circumstances he seemed to ask, where he's not even able to indicate what kind of route he'd be interested in following, its too general a question, maybe i'm wrong though.
Either way, hope he finds what he's looking for, through BBV or otherwise.

I'd love an opportunity to go back to college and do something interesting, instead of the unbelievably dull B.Comm that I did do. Almost pulled the trigger on History and Politics in TCD instead and talked myself out of it. But for that, there could be a picture of me in every house in the country and you would all bow before the radio as I made my weekly speeches to the nation.

Institute seems a good solution, but maybe contact admissions of Universities directly to see if your case could be catered for differently."Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally." - John Maynard Keynes
