What is this rubbish? Why wasn't the roof pulled across before the game began?

It's an outdoor tournament! Very different game when the roof is closed.

They are committed to playing it in the open if possible.
Once they decide to pull over the roof the place needs 20 minutes for the Air Con to kick in so as to prevent the moisture that would occur without it making the court slippy.

If it's that different, why have any of the tournament played with a roof then? Breaks during a final are horrendous, completely change momentum and flow. They have the ability to never have another semi final or final affected in this way and they choose not to.

Yeah, no way should they have started with the roof closed if they thought they'd get 2 hours of dry.

It's a compromise. A half hour delay is much better than several hours. Plus it guarantees some tennis on washout days.

I am obviously aware that pulling the roof over takes time, and as such when they have the weather forecast that they have for today they should have pulled it over this morning and got on with it imo.

Guaranteed no stoppages in play >>>>> tradition of outdoor grass tennis at Wimbledon

Obviously people don't agree, fair enough. I just don't give a fuck about the tradition of outdoor finals personally.

Great match so far. Fed starting to really turn it on the last 25 mins or so. Rain delay really helps Murray.

UL watching it on bbc with that tit andrew castle. I've got ESPN with the McEnroe Bros.

It's not so much about tradition. It's not an indoor tournament. The roof is meant to only be used in case of emergency and to keep the tournament on schedule as much as possible in times of rain.

Stoppages of play are part of the game. Only adds to the drama.

supporter:can you turn my jack russle into a greyhound so it will win loads of races

The tradition that most needs to be changed is scheduling of matches. Something more like Australian open is needed

Very likely that both players would have preferred to play with the roof open so that trumps what some randomer on his couch prefers imo.

Yeah, it's a pity. That Ivanisevic Rafter final of 2001 was incredible. My joint favourite along with 2008. The standard was nowhere near as good but the atmosphere and sheer drama was like nothing else.

They have it to stop a logistical nightmare of a overly rainy couple of weeks. It's a last resort though, and they work with the weather forcasters to predict chances of rain in a match and whether it should be closed from the start like the Djok Fed game if rain is a certainty or whether it should remain open, the latter imo should always be the choice once there's a >10% it won't rain to keep the tournament authentic.

It might have been more one sided if the roof was closed from the start as Fed is very dominant in those conditions, so you should be happy you saw two cracking sets with the roof open.

Definitely think the roof was a good thing. Nothing worse than a day without any tennis to watch. Being delayed by 30 or 40 minutes is manageable.
