Toughest run of my life this morn.

Set off to do 20 miles in a bad frame of mind, normally buzzing setting out. Felt light headed after only 2km, horsed a gel into me which sorted it out, but it was 3 hours 20 mins of torture. It's amazing the power of your mind. Did 19 miles a few weeks ago and was buzzing the whole way.

Even setting off 100% on the big day itself the last 6 miles are going to be some mental battle.

Sent an email about 30 minutes ago to an adjunct prof who delivers some classes for my module (there's about ten adjunct profs as we have a thousand students and only put 45 students per class) telling him politely to stop speaking fucking french in what is meant to be an english-delivered class. Loads of his students are non-French on exchanges so have no idea what he is saying. Fast forward to 5 minutes ago when the phone rings from an unknown number:

Him: [no introduction, so it took me a while to catch on who it was on the phone] "I'm going to make two points." [he seemed like he was about to break in two from fury as his voice was trembling] "First, I am French and this is France and the French constitution allows me to speak French. Second ..."

Me: [keen to note that despite the constitution he had signed a legal contract to deliver a course in English]. "Hang on a minute, lets not get onto the second point if its going to be as stupid as the first point"

Him: "No, your going to listen to me, and SECONDLY ..."

Yeah, so I hung up on him at that point so didn't get to hear the rest of his genius. Kinda hoping he turns up next week as we need him as much of a fuckup as he is.

Noticed this tempermental attitude with the French a lot, they're a highly strung nation. There was a meeting recently where an American colleague told a French colleague to 'not get up on his high horse' about something and I heard him muttering away for the next two hours of the meeting about how he wasn't on a high anything and if anyone was on a high horse it was the american who was ruining his country with her lack of culture.

2 Improves on the concept of the book and develops the characters and situations brilliantly.

Cocktails are a big thing over in Malta. Most places have a Happy Hour that last 3-4 hours, but can be from 12-8pm where it's buy 1 get 1 free. Prices range from €3.50-€7.90

Can't really argue with 2 cocktails for €8 at the top end, and there's one place down near the beach that serve nearly all of their cocktails in pint glasses or just a little smaller which is pretty deadly, as opposed to other places that serve them in the smallest glass they can find

Sure. If you are willing to spend enough on the right hardware then the protocols are all there. The more you invest the more you get back (within reason).

There's no real technology reason these things cant be applied to anything though. Sure free weights are a bit tougher as there's no correction method other than providing visual feedback to the person about what they are doing wrong... but entirely possible.

Look very like the coils we had to change a few times over the years in our Renault. Went through 2/3 coil packs. The engine loses power when trying to start it, and very sluggish in 1st/2nd gear. Once the new pack is in, it feels like a brand new car again!

Came across something interesting yesterday to do with cars. There's an Irish company called Applegreen that I'd say most drivers are familiar with as they have petrol stations all around the country. They just joined the stock market yesterday, so was looking into them.

Anyway, theres a decent few threads on boards (such as this one, but there's quite a few others) arguing that they sell dodgy fuel. That it doesn't maybe have the same additives as e.g. Maxol, maybe in order to save money, and so it gives less mileage and engine problems.

Boardsies were divided as to whether that was a conspiracy theory of the highest order and others finding the same thing.

The missus rang me in tears yesterday after visiting a friend of ours in a Hospice. He suffered from depression all his life , some of his family attributed it to him being gay and struggling with it but no he embraced who he was in that regard

He and his other half lit up our wedding in 2010 in Helsinki with their broad smiles and zealous social bee personalities. I often said to the missus that ‘P’* was the epitome of contentedness.

Little did I know of his struggles with depression , even less did I understand it. He had tried many times to take his own life but his worry about how others might take it kept him alive for them but dead inside for himself.

I was stunned to hear of this. If you met him you’ve be bowled over by his friendliness and his apparent joy???

This year we found out he had a tumor in his Brain that was terminal. He is refusing further treatment for quality of life and will die very soon. It’s tragic and I know it’s a cliché when someone is dying to say but he actually is an amazingly wonderful guy

I furtively asked him about his illness (the depression) . How did you cope.***** His answer was. I didn’t cope did I?* I survived.** I convinced myself that the moments of where I could tolerate myself, I could then tolerate others.

I threw myself into my work to keep my mind busy and prepared myself for the depths of despair by holding on to the possibility it would not last as long as the previous time. ***The times when I felt human was when I was entertaining others and giving to others. His only thoughts now are for other people and it gives him peace to think that way.

The only conclusion/lesson I get from this very sad life of his was that ‘to give’* gives you purpose and meaning for others when you can’t find it for yourself.

Hope you experience some longer periods of remission but maybe perhaps against the tried and mental weariness of your current condition you could consider helping others in some form or other.
