The seller on Ali for the phone ships them to a warehouse in Europe first. It is then shipped from the warehouse in Europe so that customs isn't applicable as it was bought 'inside' Europe. That isn't done for that laptop. If you get caught for anything coming outside Europe into Ireland you get a heavy bill in the post before they send on the item which I presume is something similar in France.

Been to Tehran twice this year and another half dozen times over the last decade. Its somewhere I'd like to travel in, but so far I haven't managed to get far out of the city.
The people are amazingly nice, very cultured and friendly. Obv the regime is appalling but they are starting to head towards the present. The country feels to me like Ireland pre Lemass very isolated and trying to keep the reality of the world at bay.
The hotels are rubbish and very expensive, restaurants very good and inexpensive but they almost all serve the same food but because its so delicious you won't mind.
It won't affect you but one odd thing that I keep coming across both in and out of work is the huge number of single women of my age that there are. its one of the consequences of the war with Sadaam in the 80's that decimated a whole generation.

Yup. Pretty much what I have setup.
Am using unRaid as OS to allow virtualisation of more than one OS though - Few windows VMs and Linux VMs too, but you could just have a single bare-metal windows install on a server with Chrome Remote Desktop installed instead of worrying about virtualisation.

Got a Lenovo TS140 (low watt so low cost) with 20gb RAM (will move to 32), Xeon CPU, stuck a few plates and an SSD ('cache' in Unraid). It runs headless upstairs in the back bedroom, connected to the homeplugs.

I like having the server at home because I also use it for my TV decoder. Freeview card with TVHeadend plugin in unRaid gives me TV / EPG through Kodi instead of using the actual television. My TV is just a screen now really. MK808b+ with librelec is the driver.

I've unraid running holding my files (I don't have terabytes of shit so this is absolute overkill). The KVM hypervisor with a couple of windows VMs and a few linux ones available (can use WOL with Unraid). unraid also has docker built in so really easy to run a couple of pretty useful containers (home gitlab, mysql server) and 'share' them across all the VMs. Also port forwarding setup on the router so can remote into the VMs from outside the network with RDC or VNC (windows / linux / chromebook / phone)

My ms uses Photoshop on her own windows vm on the server from her place in MK. There is some lag, and it's not perfect, but it means that as above, no need for us both to be carrying around workhorses and can make do with very thin clients. Effectively just using the laptop/chromebook as little more than a keyboard and screen.

It would be thoroughly impractical for stuff that relies heavily on GPUs, so watching videos is pants, playing games would be the worst, and heavy 3D editing/rendering will not work well either.

Microsoft are aware of the practicalities of this, and have started offering VM rental at staggeringly good prices tbh.
