Was at lunch today at a food market in Blanch. Communal seating areas, so you're there eating your lunch unable to avoid ear wigging on other people's conversations.

Anyway, there's three guys sitting beside me from the pharma industry and they're talking about the ins and outs of job references. It's a boring enough conversation but it's in earshot so I listen anyway. They were going on about the perils of giving a bad ref from an employers POV.

The guy sitting directly beside me says to the other two "I got asked for a reference for a guy I worked on a project with one time, they were asking me would I hire him for a position. This guy came in drunk one day!" ...gasps from the other two... "well, he came in hungover. Anyway, I just said I'd consider him an applicant. I didn't say I'd hire him, I didn't say I wouldn't"

Afaik, there's only two types of references, a good one and one that's not a good one. The former gets you the job, the latter tells the employer that you've to be avoided.

Am I right in thinking my fellow diner was an absolute prick in this instance?

I was actually kicking myself afterwards that I hadn't got the bottle to out myself as an earwigger and call him a cunt.

Just off the phone to my old man, he's living in Spain, near Alicante. He's still a crazy nut for poker, loves it.

Seems the game is thriving over there, he's telling me his local casino is regularly hitting 100+ runners most nights. The Monday game gets avg 130 runners each week. By the sound of it the structures are awful, but still, it's quite interesting. I always assumed the game had pretty much died worldwide, but those numbers sound like Dublin c2006.

If HUD was banned everywhere, i think i'd become a better player tbh (but i'd hate it). I'd have to cut down from playing 18+ tournaments at peak time to maybe 9 max because i'd be forced to concentrate on what's actually going on in the games. I know i'm lazy that way, and it's -EV to rely on HUD so much, especially in the early stages of games.

The better players that don't use HUD will have a much greater advantage because from watching guys on Twitch/TeamViewer that don't use HUD while multitabling, their knowledge of their opponents astounds me because i could have 1k hands on a guy and know nothing about him other than what his stats say.

I don't play full time anymore, so when i do play, i like to cram as many games as possible into each session because the choice across 5-6 sites and that would have to be cut back big time.

As for the sites, Party standard is generally pretty bad. Players don't seem to understand shove/fold situations so Final Tables are easier there than on most sites. There's not as many staked players there due to their 3% withdrawal fee so it doesn't work for companies that load/sweep sites regularly.

Microgaming recently introduced the option to change your username once a month, or every 1000 hands i think. That's a better option that banning HUD imo. They also have anonymous cash tables, and you can't table select anymore. That site is flooded with staked players, and that change will make it tougher to beat.

Ipoker has it's problems as everyone knows, and it's another site flooded with staked players. It's still going quite strong though and there's still a lot of juicy games to play. The bigger buyin games are tougher to win than the smaller buyin games (obviously) but because there's a lot of satellites now with offer tokens as opposed to direct entries, they are getting easier.

Stars.fr has got a little tougher over the last 6 months with so many good players playing tons there, and Winamax players who are banned also moving over. Good selection of games tho and still plenty of fish . Would be my favourite site overall.

Stars is just stars. So much choice and so many big fields and big prizepools. Make your way through a minefield of good and bad players, play really well with some run good and you can make some massive 6 figure scores. GaryT20, TheImprover and Downtown all bagging $240k+ scores in the last 6 weeks or so the dream is still there for everyone, and stars is the only site to give you that chance.

If you haven't you should give Undisclosed a listen it's from your man Adnan's lawyer friend & two other lawyers, it's pretty low budget compared to Serial but as it went on they got better with their production value and there is some more in depth stuff & findings from them.

You'd defo be wrong that it's dying worldwide Spain especially has been blowing up the last couple years with the Spanish Estrellas PokerStars tour just getting mega numbers, talking to few other people and they say Brazil is also starting to get into poker defo markets to get out there.

Did you complain within the first 24 hours or afterwards? I've heard that if you have an issue before funds switch that they compensate you but if you wait until afterwards it's a case of he said/she said and not much that they can do.

I personally wouldn't let one bad experience put me off. I've stayed at apts sourced via Airbnb which were extensively positively reviewed 4 times now and been very happy. I generally pay at or above the average price for the region as you tend to get a lot more for the few quid extra.

1) Anyone been horseracing in Hong Kong? I know it's a big deal there; the wife and I plan to visit Sha Tin racecourse on Nov 21st for the day meeting (probably travelling from a hotel in Kowloon/Tsim Sha Tsui) and would appreciate any tips from those who've been.

2) My car insurance renewal is coming up, and my existing provider (Wright Insurance via Chill) is upping the annual cost from €350 to €470 (€30 of that is me moving from D2 to D18 supposedly). They aren't budging on that. The cheapest I've found elsewhere is €440 from Allianz. 123.ie and FBD were both quoting over €600. This seems crazy for someone with a crappy 1.8l car, full no claims bonus and over 10 years license! Has anyone found any bargains recently, I'm wondering where else to look.
