Hah, you should post some of the shit that turns up on peoples computers. Thankfully I haven't come across anything worth calling the 5-o over.

I'm usually too busy to care but we had a lad in part time before who used to "check and see if stuff was backed up properly", all the time *sigh*. Needless to say he was let go. He took great pleasure in showing me a local amateur glamour model and serial webcam wankers. The funniest one ever was some dude who wanted a 500gb media player HDD full of porn recovered. The hdd was on the way out but we got plenty of his *ahem* files back. The structure of his folders was hilarious: dates, genres and alphabetically sorted.

Speaking of PC issues - just posted this on boards and would be grateful if anyone here could give me some advice:

Hi all,

Well, as the thread title states, I need some help: my gaming PC of a few years old (which has always had very occasional issues starting, the fans would whirr a few times, power would die, then without prompting the fans would start up again and it would boot as normal) died suddenly this evening, just as I loaded up Crysis - it literally died the very second the previous game load had finished and the FPS screen appeared. Now pressing the button sometimes (only sometimes) results in a very lonely looking amber light turning on in the front of the case. The fans do not start and the PC doesn't go to post, no post beeps or anything. I did the usual, held the power button down to drain the capacitors (like I know what that actually means! ), disconnected the mobo from the power supply, disconnected the graphics card, nothing seems to work, the PSU just doesn't seem to power up.

From reading other threads, it seems like it is either a dead PSU (had one of those many moons ago with a previous PC) or maybe a dead mobo (never had one of those). Any way for an amateur to figure out which it is? A dead PSU would be fairly easy for me to sort out, a dead mobo would make me think about replacing the machine.

Many thanks to anyone who reads this and can offer some advice!

Yeah this was great fun. Probably the best part of my old job was destroying old HDDs once every three months. Driving a drill through the platters in two places is more than enough to destroy data for all but the most paranoid people.

Today its been happening all day though. Tilting big time. Anyone know a fix for this? I shudder at the thought of phoning their support line.

In Sunday’s Styles section I had a piece on the untapped intellectual universe of Snookinomics: a back-of-the-envelope calculation for why Nicole Polizzi who is known as Snooki can charge $25,000 to drink for a few hours at a nightclub — or, more controversially, $32,000 to talk at Rutgers, more than that university is paying the Nobel laureate Toni Morrison.

So how could Snooki be “worth” more than a Nobel Prize-winner?

The discrepancy has nothing to do with their respective “intrinsic” values to society, however you might quantify those. Rather, it’s all about market forces. There is high demand for Snooki, and other reality-TV celebrities, because the venues that host her find that she provides a very handsome return on their investment.

By my back-of-the-envelope calculation, Snooki can bring revenue that is tenfold her appearance fee, at least for the spring break party last month at the club LAX in Las Vegas, which I used as a case study.

After all, with Snooki on tap, clubs can expect bigger volume, more drinking and higher rollers. But the biggest payoff comes from the publicity associated with an event with a household name.

If your club hosts Ms. Polizzi or Kim Kardashian or Britney Spears, you can almost be assured coverage in at least one of the sublimely popular celebrity tabloids. To that end you’ll also probably require your celebrity guest to sign a “non-compete” agreement, which says she can’t party at any competing clubs while she’s in town. This is pretty standard practice, so that you can capture all the publicity associated with her appearance — and thereby assure future traffic.

“If we don’t book a celebrity now because we think it’s too expensive, then we know we won’t be in any of the magazines, and we won’t be on TV, and that hurts our revenue next month,” said Alex Cordova, who is the vice president for marketing for Angel Management Group, which owns and manages some of the hottest clubs in Las Vegas, including LAX. “It’s a business like any other, and you need to make a good investment that pays off,” he said.

In the case of Rutgers, the international coverage the Snooki event received — even if not all positive — raised the university’s visibility.

I asked Cision, a company that tracks media coverage, to estimate the dollar value of all the various mentions of Snooki’s appearance at Rutgers. Jay Krall, the company’s business development manager, sent me the following calculation, based roughly on what all those press shout-outs would cost if bought as advertising:

Plenty of voices in both news media and social media have been calling for the university to spend its money in more substantive ways than attracting less-than-cerebral celebrities. But that’s not the whole story, much of this exposure puts the Rutgers name in front of new eyeballs, and not always in a bad light. On blogs specifically, I found that the coverage was 75 percent neutral, 10 percent positive and 15 percent negative in tone toward the event (this is programmatic sentiment analysis so there is some margin for error, missed sarcasm, etc.). This breakdown is fairly typical, most mentions of any news story are simple pass-alongs, though often presented with a silent smirk that’s hard to quantify, with no opinion expressed outright. The exposure from those neutral mentions contributes a considerable amount of publicity value to the event despite the negative coverage. Still, I’m discounting substantially for potshot mentions in my valuation here…

Quick(ish) question for the fitness minded on the bbv.

I'm supposed to run a 10k on Sunday - the first of my life. I'm pretty unfit - Say maybe 1/2 stone to a stone overweight and a smoker - but not very heavy smoker - and not many cigarettes. I was training with another guy who's similar enough fitness level(i.e. poor) although not a smoker. We only started training for it about 5 or 6 weeks ago. Anyway the last time I was out running until yesterday was over a week ago - and we "ran" ~7km in about 40 mins on a beach. I was pretty tired after it and its the farthest we've ran - but I could have gone another bit. I've had the flu pretty bad with the last week and couldn't go out until yesterday - and we ran 5k. We've planned to go out on the beach again tomorrow evening and run 8k and then maybe two shorter runs before Sunday. We were aiming to do this in <50 mins(lol) but at the moment I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish it at all. I'll be starting the 10k having never actually ran 10k which can't be good. I'm not really considering bailing out as an option as the other guy would be seriously pissed off with me - plus I want to do it anyway.

So yeah, what can I do in the next 5 days to maximize my chances of reaching the finishing line in like less than an hour?

tbo you can get some good stuff with them, nice hotels good restaurants etc imo hold onto them and the next time you are looking to go on a short break, or for a meal out check to see where you can use them and go there .
