I'm thinking though more of the more extreme hacking ones where you buy air miles on an exchange and cash it in for first class flights
You then can book flights through their partners/system using the Lifemiles to pay for a the flights or a portion of the flight. I think their flights are more expensive than other places but it works out cheaper when you buy the 2 for 1 miles and also take the hit on not getting any air miles on your account.
That's not really travel hacking though. It's just buying air miles at a good price and saving them until you decide to book. They might have an expiry date - I cant remember.
It's quite hard to nail flight hacking it from Dublin because it's such a small airport and has few direct destinations. Most of the sweet hacks seem to come from the US and Middle East. But you are correct that you need to be extremely flexible and not really care where you go if you want to jump on some insane deals.
In terms of finding cheapest flights use a combo of Google Flights (or Matrix), Sky Scanner, Last Minute, Kayak, HipMunk etc and the airline directly. Compare dates and tweak them if you can.
If you want to hack them you will need to learn a lot more that I never did. I used a guy of https://flightfox.com/ once and he got me a great deal going to Peru - it cost me $60 for his time and I ended up booking a flight in Portuguese on the Brazil version of a website. They have some entertaining reads such as:
The most in-depth analysis of the world's Best First-Class Cabins. We've deconstructed the Seat Stats and measured the immeasurable Rockstar Factor. From caviar and vintage champagne, to uncovering the cheapest routes, we've done the research to help you fly in style!
The most in-depth analysis of the world's Best Business-Class Cabins. We've deconstructed the Seat Stats and measured the immeasurable Rockstar Factor. From pyjamas and limos, to uncovering the cheapest routes, we've done all the research to help you fly in style!
We just challenged our experts to find the absolute cheapest way to fly in the world's best first-class cabins. Imagine our surprise at the winning entry: only $690! Keep reading for all the details and a step-by-step guide outlining how you can fly cheap first class too.
First-class is too expensive for most of us. But at Flightfox, it's our business to discover economic ways to fly in style. So, buckle up for all the turbulent thrills, red-wine spills, and the answer to whether you can fly first class too.
Other pages I read were:
It's never been easier to compare travel and accommodation prices using sites like Hipmunk , Kayak , or Google Flights , but a little extra legwork
Premium Fare Deals - Discuss specific premium fare code 'good deals' including fare deals that book into premium economy, business and first class cabins.
There is another concept called Fuel Dumping (read this, this and this) for more info. It's a little bit complicated so I never looked at it any further.
I've never really gotten into it further since I was chatting to you before. I'm not that organised to allow myself to be flexible so it is difficult to capitalise on it some of the deals and offers. Flying from Dublin hindered a lot of trips too as you could get the sweet First Class action but end up with 8 hr layovers in bigger Airport hubs. Your Dublin leg will probably not have proper Business Class comfort either. I just use Flightfox and take the hit on the fee but I'm sure the info in in them forums and threads for free if you can be bothered. They speak in code in a lot of them forums too so you will need to learn it to understand. I know they get pissed off when HolidayPirates and http://www.the-exbir.com/ post the deals as they get shut down pretty quick after that.Last edited by RoadSweeper; 09-04-15, 11:11.

It can be a lot of effort for not that much reward trying to game the upgrades systems. Having status with the airline and flying a lot are pretty much prerequisites for any decent offering. Dublin is a good route for Emirates/Etihad upgrades but it would be a huge fluke to get one for free/cheap. They arent horribly bad in economy anyway for a flight that is gonna be 6/7 hours max. Business is pretty sweet for overnighters, like London to Hong Kong, but if money is an issue preventing you booking business in the first place then you arent going to be in the right bracket for OP-UPs. Better spending your time and energy making sure the airplane is a good one, and that you get a decent seat. If you are going on hols, seems silly to add a huge stop to journey just to sit in a wider seat for part of the trip. On the other, I do need to get rid of everything. If the quoted post is an offer I'll accept it for convenience sake. Drop me a PM with details
On a related note I do have a job lot of alcohol that I need to dispose of, a decent offer for the lot and collection by Wednesday of next week is welcomed by PM.
As seen below (with an extra 2 bottles of Tia Maria)

2 large bananas
100g dark chocolate bar
Peanut butter
Get a chopping boards or some flat surface you can put in the freezer. Put baking paper on it.
Cut the bananas into slices, 0.5-1cm thick as per preference of how much banana you want in each one. Spoon peanut butter onto each one and flatten out. If you want you could fry the peanut butter in some coconut oil, and icing sugar to make it a bit more runny and sweet. That would be like a reeces cup mixture. I dont do that.
Now depending on how confident you are you either freeze them as they are for half an hour so that they are easier to dip in chocolate or else just do it straight away. Melt the chocolate using the double boiler method on a v low heat, the lowest. Leave the chocolate on the heat and put each banana/peanut butter in one by one and spoon chocolate all over. Throw in the freezer, I threw them in for a few hours.
Recipe made me 22 of them. Nice proteiny fruity chocolate snack.
