I have been offered a role in the gaming industry in Cork for 21k + night shift premium of 4k with a review after 6 months. I know I will most likely much prefer the job in Cork. I have gotten a call back while writing this offering me 23K + the 4k.... Is this enough of a difference?

Kilkenny job will cost me 2k extra in expenses so real wage is 21k + really bad bonus.

I probably should mention its the night shift excess that I am questioning. 4k for giving up weekends and a more normal life in general. I was hoping for 2/3k more.
23k + 4k is a competitive entry level starting salary which the position sounds like.

Everything else you have mentioned makes the Cork one a no brainer to me. The new routine might be a good thing for you. Generally if you do well in the night role a day position may open up if that's what you want after the 6 months.

Depends what year his second trip to France was.

D-Day never happened anyway, Allied propaganda.

Fair enough and in real terms working 50% of weekends is probably increasing my wage anyway.

Ya I think reading someone else saying it helps a lot. It is an industry I like which is huge.

"Impossible. The British always have to show their passports on arrival in France!"

The elderly gentleman gave the French Immigration Officer a long hard look.

          Then he quietly explained:

"Well, the last time I was here, I came ashore on Juno Beach on D-Day in June 1944, and I couldn't find any fucking Frenchmen to show it to!
Why would he bring his passport to war and actively seek a Frenchman to show it to?

@Tipp, what's the commute to Kk in hours a day?
Sounds a pretty shit life/work balance if commute is 3 hours a day.

Are you dealing with Americans during the night shift?

Would you be driving to cork daily too?

Entry opp into an industry you have an interest in with promo opportunities down the line? Night shift is a bitch though. I did it for 3 years and due to nature of the hours found myself hanging out in niteclubs and those casinos places....

Here is a bad joke what I just wrote:

A woman walks up to the bar with a parrot on her shoulder and says hello in a husky voice.

The barman says hello back as he bends to pick up a glass

While rising, he gets an order for a pint.

Sure he says and what will the bird have?

Would you please refrain from speaking about my companion in that sexist manner, says the parrot.

50 minutes a day each way. I would happily do it but I was told in the Interview that it would be frowned upon. I think I have a potential place to stay that may not require an outright rental.

I would be dealing with American Sport more than Americans due to the gambling restrictions in the States.

Yes, I mentioned in all three interviews that I was interested in progressing to a more analytical role. They seem to be expanding and stated that opportunities pop up on a regular basis. They said the role gives you excellent exposure to the business before moving upwards.

I may drop you a pm later on.

Go for the one you're interested in, there's a huge amount of non-monetary benefit to be had from being able to show up for work and not wanting to walk straight back out the door again.

Night shifts can be very tough and they suit some people better than others (hated them myself) but if there's an opportunity down the line to get moved to a day shift in the same role or a different one, then taking the hit for 6 months and performing well will be worth it long term.

For your first job you should not be looking at the money which is very unimportant compared to other aspects such as job satisfaction and progression.
Money comes with time anyway. There is a pittance between them. Sounds like Cork, no brainer, get experience in an industry you want.

Night sift can be as grim as you let it imo. I worked it long enough myself & loved it tbh. Played golf several times a week & had a good lifestyle. So if you decide to take that job, set yourself a routine & stick to it. You'd be surprised how manageable it can be with a bit of discipline.

That said, there have been several studies that strongly suggest that working night shift long term can lead to health/mental issues as basically you're fighting your body's natural instinct to sleep when it's dark etc.

The other downside is getting yourself back on a normal clock for your days off, but if your shift patterns are reasonable this can also be managed. I found for me, when I was off for a few days, I'd get home from work & go straight to bed for 4 hours. Then have the afternoon/evening as normal waking time & ready for bed come midnight or whenever, to keep you on a normal schedule.

Personally, working in an industry I have an interest in outweighs the negatives of starting off on night shift. I assume the option to move to days will become available at some point in the medium term in which case it's a relatively short term sacrifice.

The thing I miss the most about working shifts is the time off. 9-5 M-F you barely have enough time to get anything done before it's Monday again. With 4 days of complete freedom you can really settle into your time off and enjoy it properly.

For example, I've barely played any poker since I started my new job. I'm just too tired to focus on it properly on weekdays, and I like to spend Saturday drinking with friends. That leaves only Sunday nights to play, but I always end up staying up too late when I play poker, and that makes Monday even rougher than normal. So I don't bother anymore.

When I was a shift worker, I could easily spend 3 of my 4 nights off in the casino and still have plenty of energy for getting things done, relaxing properly and being ready for my next shift. It's really a swings and roundabouts situation tbh. Once you get used to it, shifts aren't as hard as you might think.

I'd be a bit circumspect about the gaming job. Is it essentially that you'll be phone support until a better job pops up, or is it something more? They could easily just be dangling the analytics possibility down-the-road just to get you to take this job without having the slightest intention of giving you an analytics position. You're quite pigeon-holed careerwise if you go down the phone support route. I'd personally choose the job that gives you the most solid work experience and training. For your next job in 2-3 years that's what's going to payoff.

Although maybe I'm totally wrong about the nature of the gaming job. Also worth bearing in mind that a lot of gaming analytics will inevitably be highly automated in the next few years, thus requiring less people.

It rarely happens because unless there is a clear progression path written into the job description. If you are any good they will want to keep you doing the job your doing and every year there are cheaper grads coming into the role you wanted in the first place.

The bit in Red is probably 100% right as it is likely a different hiring manager/HR rep looking after the different departments. However it is what an individual does for their own career progression to get the subsequent ideal role that counts when they start with a company.

The bit in Green is a bit naive tbh. In my current role I have witnessed phone agents going to every differing part of the business and so many different levels. Phone agents have become Marketing Executives, Operation Executives, Team Leaders, Trainers, UX executives, Traders etc. etc.
There are some phone agents who came in at entry level and are now P&L Managers and People Managers after a few years.

In summary once you get in the door you have a potential massive increase in influence on getting any other role within that company as long as you have a focus to do it.

                                                                                            Comment
