Hmm, Halep is a non-runner due to covid. That sucks because I can't change anymore.

    Result 9/37.
Cricket England v Pakistan, England highest runscorer.

    1st. Zak Crawley.
    2nd. Josh Buttler.
    3rd. Chris Woakes.
No points for anyone - None of our selections ever really looked like getting involved.

Wee bit of housekeeping. I have Rugby League Superleague down in the OP as 4,2,1 points but have to change it to 4,2 points as there won't be a 3rd place in this years play-offs.
And not enough teams in it to pay 4 places.

Cricket, highest England runscorer v Pakistan will finish Monday or Tuesday but probably about 95% chance it will be a blank all round.
    https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/en...84;type=series
Unpicked Crawley & Buttler are uncatchable in first and second. Joe Root or Dom Sibley could get third place, but Pakistan are so far behind that there's a big chance England won't get to bat again.

Darts Premier League has jumped up the calendar as this week they abandoned plans to play the last few rounds in front of crowds in October.
Instead the remaining 10 nights of the league phase (which is all we are interested in) will be completed behind closed doors ending the first week of September.

Received selections from mcngget at last, issue with seeing/accessing the pms on the new site.
On the grounds that nothing major seems to have happened to any of the rest of our selections in the last week (Salah hasn't left the EPL, Clan Des Obeaux hasn't broken a leg, that sort of thing) then I don't think there's an issue with accepting the selections.
So will put them in the spreadsheet when I get a chance but here they are now.

mcnugget breaking my heart, doing my best to be fair and he has been logged on but no reply so far.
With England probably not batting until tomorrow afternoon, I'll give him til then to get an entry for the cricket in.
And whatever time the USPGA tees off for an entry for that event, presumably the afternoon our time as well.
If anyone knows him IRL, give him a push.

Anyway hopefully the show is back on the road now - USPGA golf next to finish on Sunday.

    Sibley -AJ

    Golf. USPGA.
Brooks Koepka - Lao Lao, luckforsome, Flushdraw, pokerhand, RichieM

Quick update on remaining events from the original list.
Lots of sports have got back up and running over the last few weeks.
Best case scenario we could have 37 events (including the new events) to complete in 4 and a half months, so messy as it's been up to now it could get quite hectic and exciting yet.
All your selections are in post #64 above if you've forgotten them.

Soccer. Champions League and Europa League resume this week. and finish at the end of the month.
Liverpool (5 picks) the highest profile casualty from the CL. Arsenal (premierstone), Ajax (mdoug, Lao Lao) and Salzburg (mcnugget) gone from the Europa.

Baseball. Shortened season started recently. New York Yankees were the most popular pick and are off to a flyer. 60 regular season games, then playoffs.

Basketball. Re-started last week. No real idea of the format but the asterisk beside the team names indicates that our 3 selections (Bucks, Lakers, Clippers) are all into the play-offs anyway.

GAA. No firm dates but the intentions still seems to be to finish the league and have an old school no-back-door championship from October to December. I'm dubious but we'll see.

Ice-Hockey. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_S...layoff_bracket. From what I can work out all our selections are still involved and will enter at the first round stage. Except for NY Islanders (mdoug) who have to play a prelim round first. I'm sure it makes sense somehow.

Snooker. World Championship. On-going. Ronnie and Trump safely into second round.

Rugby. 6 Nations. Date are set in October to finish this.

Cricket T20 Blast. Starts 27th August.

Darts Premier League. Resumes 25th August with 6 successive nights behind closed doors. Idea here is to get 2nd rather than 1st. Everyone except Daryl Gurney (mdoug) looks to still have a good chance.

Super League Rugby League. Resumed a few days ago. Will play 18 games then top 4 into playoffs. Wigan and St Helens our only picks with Helens a bit ropey so far.

Aussie Rules. Re-started a while ago. Richmond, St Kilda and Geelong all in the play-off spots halfway through the (I think) 17 game regular season. Collingwood (mcnugget, limpwhacker) just outside.

Received selections from Strewelpeter, limpwhacker, mdoug, premierstone, pokerhand & RichieM.
Have been talking to Flushdraw and will try to contact the others over the weekend.
Couple of people picked Fulham or Brentford for the Championship.
You can of course change on Tuesday deadline day if this selection wins promotion on Monday night or give me an alternate/backup selection now if you wish.

Edit. Received from shrapnel, Flushdraw and luckforsome.
Lao Lao, 6tarpool and mcnugget the only absentees at the moment.

    EPL Top Scorer 31/12/20.
Salah, Mane, Kane, Aguero, Auba and Vardy have been top dogs for a few years, but youngsters like Rashford, Pulisic and Jesus could be ready to take over. Or perhaps a new signing could trump them all. A very open event.

    EPL Championship 31/12/20.
Tomorrow we'll know the 2 teams who'll join Norwich as relegated from the EPL. Any of these 3 will fancy their chances of bouncing back with the parachute money. But the regular contenders like Forest, Derby and Preston will be no pushovers. The losing play-off teams will be strong.
Note. Playoff Final Monday 3rd August.

    Golf. USPGA.
Presumably all the usual big guns will be in attendance.

    Tennis US Open Womens.
Also very open, heres the 2019 event. Will it be Gauff or Williams for the USA or one of the Europeans again?

Cricket. England v Pakistan Highest England run scorer.
Root, Sibley, Burns and Stokes seem to have been knocking it around the park for fun against the West Indies.

    Horse Racing. Arc De Triomphe.
Not one I'd normally include as its pretty impossible in January. But many more clues now having seen the Derbys and Oaks.
    https://www.oddschecker.com/horse-ra...he-2020/winner

Horse Racing. King George VI chase.
Basically the winter Gold Cup, albeit a different direction, slightly shorter and much wetter.
    https://www.oddschecker.com/horse-ra...i-chase/winner.

    Darts World Cup.
Quite a range of finalists in this team event with Wales, Ireland, Belgium and Australia coming close. If MVG could clone himself then the Netherlands would win every year, but Scotland and Engand will likely have 2 players in the Top 10.

    Rugby Challenge Cup.
At the quarter final stage but still very open and could make a case for 6. Toulon and Leicester have the European pedigree but Bordeaux and Bristol may be better clubs now. Edinburgh a dark-horse.

    Cycling – Giro D'Italia
I know little about this, but interestingly seems to be a different set of names at the top of the market than the TDF, so presumably these big events are specifically targetted. I don't know who these people are,

Here are 10 replacement events which will hopefully go some way towards getting us back to a normal competition. Overall we'll have ended up with rather more soccer (5 events) and horse-racing (4 events) than ideal, but these seem to be among the safest events to actually take place.
I intended to add a couple more but am not sure yet if they will go ahead - if the Dubai Rugby 7s is confirmed for Nov/Dec I will include it, and if the Athletics Diamond League gets up-and-running as planned next month then I'll include an event in one of the October meetings. But realisitcally there comes a point where I have to stop adding events and let the competition run.
    Sport Event 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Start
    41 Soccer EPL Top Scorer on 31/12/20 4 2 1 12/09/20
    42 Soccer Championship (i.e., the Division below Prem League) 31/12/20 4 2 1 12/09/20
    43 Golf US PGA Championship 5 3 2 1 1 06/08/20
    44 Tennis US Open Womens 4 2 1 1 31/08/20
    45 Cricket England v Pakistan test series top English Batsman 4 2 1 05/08/20
    46 Horse Racing Arc de Triomphe 4 2 1 04/10/20
    47 Horse Racing King George Chase Kempton 4 2 1 26/12/20
    48 Darts World Cup 4 2 1 1 06/11/20
49 Rugby European Challenge Cup (not the Heineken, the lesser one) 4 2 18/09/20
    50 Cycling Giro D'Italia 4 2 1 03/10/20
Entries when you can. Next weekend would be ideal as it would give me the long weekend to get them into my spreadsheet, but the official cut-off point is Tuesday 4th August as the Cricket starts on the 5th (and the pga golf on the 6th) so thats the actual deadline if you want to max your chances. I'll endeavour to contact everyone just to let them know - thanking one of these posts would save me some time as I'll know you don't need to be pm'ed here or facebook etc.

Crib notes/links on these event to follow....

3 more events on the scrapheap since my last update.

Cricket World Cup - now officially put back to 2021.
Tennis Davis Cup finals also moved back a year.
Poker WSOPME is taking place online, but is going to be anonymous. So I can't use it for Last Longest purposes.

That brings our total to 13 lost.

    Replacements to follow......

    Late July change deadlines.
Event Start Date Deadline Date (Time 21.59)
    Baseball 2020 MLB 23/07/20 18/07/20
    Snooker – World Championship 31/07/20 26/07/20
We are now down 10 events with the postponement of the Ryder Cup. And I'm dubious about a couple more (e.g., not sure how much appetite there'll be in the country for behind closed door GAA in October which is 4 events).
So I'm finalizing the replacements, hope to get it official over the weekend and bunp us up to around 35 events.
As a sneak preview I'm looking at
    Soccer. Top EPL scorer 31/12.
    Golf. USPGA.
    Rugby. European Challenge Cup.
    Tennis. US Open Womens.
Cricket. England v Pakistan Top England run-scorer.
    Dubai Rugby 7s Men.
    Horse Racing. Arc De Triomphe.
    Darts. World Cup.

+ anything else I can come with in the next 48 hours.

All reasonably competitive and most are likely to go ahead. Will get back over the next few days.

Probably be in line with what I suggested earlier (US PGA Golf, US Open tennis, Top scorer EPL 31/12.
Best I keep it relatively mainstream as these big events have the most potential to go ahead imo.

Is it something 6star can fix? Tbh, if he can't then maybe just a reminder post once a month on the main thread?

This is where our 40 events stand.

3 completed - NFL, Aussie Open tennis, Gold Cup.

9 started then stopped - this is the latest.
Soccer Champions League UEFA Meeting June 17
Soccer Europa League UEFA Meeting June 17
Rugby 6 Nations top tryscorer No dates. English club rugby returns August. Surely thy'll get this completed
Darts Darts Premier League, League Phase Scheduled to resume July 30th
Rugby League Super League Grand Champions Planning to resume in August, may not finish until January
Aussie Rules Grand Final Resuming in 4 days time
Basketball NBA Champions Resuming July 31st, every game in Disney !
Ice Hockey Stanley Cup Champions Straight to play-offs in July seems to be the plan
GAA Football National Football League Division 2 Probably lost – I retain some hope they'll play them as warmups pre championship.
    ….
19 not yet started, and still theoretically planning to go ahead. Some more likely than others.
Soccer EPL LAST Place 31/12/20 EPL and Championship restarting soon, next season planned for Sept.
Hurling Munster Champions Talk of starting in October.
Hurling All Ireland Champions As above, but All Ireland final may be January
GAA Football Ulster Champions October resumption looks the plan.
Horse Racing Epsom Derby Scheduled for first Saturday in July
Golf US Masters Scheduled for 12th November
Golf US Open Scheduled for 17th September
Golf Ryder Cup Highest Points Scorer Has a date, but a lot of players want it postponed
Cricket T20 Blast Shortened competition starting in August is the plan
Cricket T20 World Cup Indian media reckon it's going to be cancelled
Snooker World Championship Winner Re-scheduled for July 31st.
Snooker UK Championship Winner In December, should be OK
Tennis French Open Womens Champion French seem determined to go-ahead with September date
Tennis Davis Cup Still planned for 23rd November
Baseball World Series Shortened 50 game season seems the plan, player wages the obstacle
Cycling Tour De France Still looking at starting on 29th August
Darts World Chanpionship BEST ENGLISH In December, should be OK
Poker WSOPME Last Longest No news, still planning an Autumn event apparently
Team Handball Womens European Championship Still scheduled for 3rd December
    ….
    9 definitely cancelled
    Soccer Euro 2020
Golf British Open They won't reschedule this
Rugby Heineken Cup We all picked Leinster so its 'cancelled' for us.
    Rugby Mens Olympic 7s
Tennis Wimbledon Womens Champion They won't reschedule this
    Boxing Olympics Country Most Medals
    Field Hockey Mens Olympics
    Volleyball Mens Olympics
    Curling Mens World Championships
    ….
Possible replacement events. Would be looking for selection to be made by 31/07 to keep within the spirit of the 'picking in advance and hoping for the best' element of the competition.
Soccer EPL Top Scorer on 31/12/20 Direct replacement for missing Euro 2020
Golf US PGA Championship Direct replacement for missing British Open. I could make two events here, best Euro, best American
Rugby 7s First event of 20/21 season, usually Dubai in December
Tennis US Open Womens Replacement for Wimbledon. Though a lot of top players don't want to go to New York
Formula One A race, don't know which one, possibly without Hamilton F1 is getting up and running – Will look at calendar and see what might work best.
Cricket Enfland v Pakistan test series top bowler or something Could replace T20 World Cup if that is cancelled
Others May be events scheduled to replace the Olympic events I'll look to see what Athletics etc have planned for second half of year.

    The story so far #3.
And suddenly all the sport got postponed for 3 months.
When I last checked we had definitely lost 9 events, and another 4 looked in danger.
Nothing much has changed - no more events are lost but events like the GAA look dubious. Ryder Cup seems to opposed by some key players.
On the other hand some are starting back up with the Epsom Derby scheduled for early July and soccer looking good.
I'll give basketball, icehockey, cricket and rugby union/league another few weeks to see what they are doing.
I'd like to get to 35 events so will need to get some replacements, but at the moment few sports have definite calendars for the months ahead.

I'll rebuild this thread over the upcoming long weekend, as unfortunately all the previous tables/leaderboards etc are gone.

Looks like sport is getting ready to start again - Aussie Rules and Derby have a date for resumption, EPL is moving down the path, positive noises from NBA and hockey etc.
I'll find out any info I can about the other events.

I don't think we've officially lost any more events since I flagged nine as being cancelled in early April.
So with some specially selected replacement events we may be able to get this going again for the second half of the year.

Re the GAA comps, the proposas I have seen are that the league will not finish, the provincial championships will be run as planned but only the top two progress straight to AI semi. AI finals proposed to be played on 18th and 25th October. All subject to approval of course from higher authorities than the GAA.

Normally do an update on these bank holiday weekends, listing how well/badly our selections are doing in the more obscure events. Different this year sadly.
So I thought I'd check to see how our 40 events stack up in the midst of covid-19, and whether there is some path to having a reasonable competition.

Ideally I'd like to get the comp played, seeing as everyone spent at least an hour coming up with initial selections.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I got the sense the last week that there seems to be a desire to start getting things back up and running worldwide, and sport would likely be a part of that. Whether the 'curve' is flattening enough I don't know.

Anyway, after a bit of research this seems to be the state of play of the 40 events.

    Finished Events 3

Started events- intention still to finish 6

Started events – not sure if intend to finish 3

Events not yet started, still intending to go-ahead 19

    Definitely cancelled Events 9

    Possible replacement events
To keep the spirit of the 'picking in advance' I'd have a cut-off point (30/06 or 31/07 seem good) for selections for these events.

So I think on balance there still exists a chance we can get a decent competition out of this. So we carry on for the time being and see where things stand in another month.

That marble race was actually great fun, watched all 10 minutes of it which is 10 minutes more than I've ever watched of our baseball event.
I'd have lost a small fortune betting in running.

Clearly we are down Euro2020, Curling, Ryder Cup, Olympics x 5 events, none of which will take place.

There's a chance I suppose that there'll be an epic second half of the sports year when some random weekend in September has a tennis major, golf major, 6 nations rugby, Derby, Champions League final all happening within 12 hours of each other. And it'd be good to be part of that. If everyone agreed I could probably come up with a few replacements to get it to 35 events or so.

I don't think there's any sport happening anywhere for the next month (even the Aussie Rules stopped after this weekends first round of games) so we can make a decision later.

But probably 1/20 that we have to void it. Bleak stuff.
...I'd be afraid to think what replacements we could come up with that are still going ahead... Would be class if we had about 30 events in the last 4 months... A world without sport is not a world I'm happy in...

    2nd. Santini. 2 points - Flushdraw.

It's all very 2018 with Strewelpeter making the early running.

Fuck knows what the next event to finish will be. The next few weeks should have been quite busy with the 6Nations, GAA League and Masters Golf all set to complete. All these are on hold, possibly for ever.
As things stand the only event which looks as if it might go-ahead short-term is the World Mens Curling at the end of March.

    Late March/early April change deadlines.

Baseball has been taken off the deadline list, as the start of the season has been delayed for at least a few weeks.
GAA Div2, Ice-Hockey and Basketball are all taking unscheduled pauses also.

    ********
Looks like we'll have an actual result tomorrow. Not to universal IPB-BBV acclaim admittedly, but the Cheltenham Gold Cup seems likely to go ahead.
All our selections go to post, and we cover 6 of the first 7 in the betting.

Soccer Champions League and Europa League

Probably odds-on now that these are either cancelled or at best severely delayed.
Points are 4-2-1-1 (total 8) so I'll rule it as 1 point each for the quarter-finalists if the competition gets curtailed at that stage. Or 2 points for each team if it gets stopped at the semi-final stage.

Just thought I'd make sure to say this before some of our selections like Liverpool and PSG play their Last 16 games tonight.

Seemed little point in asking ye to pick a Mens Waterpolo team or something now when there has to be doubt over whether any of our Olympic events go ahead at all. Hopefully we'll know more in a month.

Rugby 6 Nations Top Try Scorer
Looks like there is going to be some disruption here with Ireland v Italy seeming certain to be called off, and presumably Italy v England in some doubt as well.
Going by 2001 (foot and mouth) they will probably reschedule these games for later in the year and they'll count in this competition. If they never get rescheduled and its just these 1 or 2 games then I'll consider it to be a valid result. 3 or more games lost and I'll consider it a dead event. Fair, I hope.

Other than the HCup rugby I won't replace any other lost events and we'll play it out with the listed events.
If 20 events or something mad get cancelled I'll see what the fairest thing to do is, though if that happens the world is probably on fire anyway and it won't matter.

3 changes can be made to events, up to 5 days before the start date of that event.
Changes must be made by 21:59 5 days beforehand, I'll update exact deadlines for changes as we go along.
Changes must be made on this thread, no editing or deleting changes once posted.
I'll be strict about these on-going deadlines as getting differentials or blockers in at the last moment can be crucial near the end.
Post something like 'Change Derby from El Gran Senor to Secreto' to do a change.

I've noticed over the years that no events seem to conclude in February, so the Cheltenham Gold Cup in mid-March will be next to finish. 6 Nations Rugby will end around the same time and Jonny May & Josh Adams are already setting the pace. GAA Div 2 also looks like being fun with all 100% records gone after a mere 2 games.
