Ahhh, the gf had her graduation today.... Got a first (obv) and a hug from the dean for having the highest grades of any graduate. I miss her so much even though she's only been gone 48 hours. Never felt this emotional thing before even when I was dating the previous gf for four years.

Went to see Keith Barry last night in the Olympia, absolute cracking show it is only running till Sunday if you can get tickets to it i would highly highly recommend it

Ended up in one of the boxes in there, cool nice im thinking if anybody gets called i wont have to go down, first person out to be called is my best mate up onto the stage he goes, phew thank god it wasnt me sitting in the box beside is this decent looking girl with her mother and brother, their door swings open a few minutes later who pops in Marty Whelan lols

Some of the stuff he does in the show is just brilliant and the hypnotism is crazy, stay away from me zuroph you devil man!!!

I don't wanna say too much about the show in case any of you do go and see it, but he does this one thing were you lock your hands together and out stretch your two index fingers and he starts to speak and what he was saying i could feel it and was trying to fight it.

Going to see it this sunday. GF was dying to see it so got us tickets. Missed reviews here so far, but seems as this is her's and mines first time going to see this type of show I am sure we will like it

I absolutely hated the Village i just dont like him as a director and have given up on anything he does. He has something to do with a new movie called Devil and when the trailer is showing his name appears on the screen and the audience groans at it, cant find the clip on youtube.

Is that book good, sitting on shelf ages, looks a decent read but has a few ahead of it in must read list

It was a bit slow to start, he has a hard no nonsense writing style which didn't really flow and made it difficult to concentrate on it. Some chapters are worth going back over and you probably have to to gain an understanding of the subject. There were some really fascinating insights into different types of magic/illusions/mentalists etc and how he feels about them and people beliefs in them.
Overall I liked it and would recommend it.

Just discovered the power of Creme Fraiche in salads over the last week or so. Chop up a few tomatoes, scallions, peppers, cucumber, maybe add a bit of fennel and salt, then lump in some creme fraiche and mix it all up. It's a world-leading salad imo, would nearly make you like eating vegetables.

Has anyone else read 'Guns, Germs and Steel' by Jared Diamond? Just wondering about opinions on it as have just finished it. Am halfway towards thinking it should be required reading for everyone with an IQ above 80. Fascinating stuff.

Also has anyone read any of Chekov's short stories? Tempted to buy one of his books today but not sure if they will be any good.

And a final question! Has anyone read The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe, and is it any good? Have read everything else he has written but always been a bit hesitant about the Kool-Aid book.

Insurance is inherently -EV. However EV is not the sole criterion for any gamble. The risk of ruin is why we don't put our net worth on the line at 5/4.

Also, with life not being a game, the actual value of the money to your life matters. This means that it's not just the relationship between the premium, the costs covered, and the probability of an event occurring triggering the policy that matters.

If the above were all that mattered (as it would in a simple EV calculation) then a health insurance package which cost €10k a month could conceivably be +EV. The relevance of paying the premium and paying the cost of the event without insurance to your life and lifestyle matters too. This is why so many low paid Americans have gone without health insurance - it's not because they are EV whizzes, it's because paying the premium would significantly affect their lifestyle.

So how much would €70 a month affect your lifestyle? Would it mean not socialising for a week or €70 less going into a savings account?

Also, notwithstanding the impressive job that actuaries do (actuarial based predictions outperform health professional clinical predictions), health insurance can be impossible to truly evaluate in respect of EV from a personal perspective since death or serious incapacitation is not particularly amenable to the assignation of a monetary value. It is done by insurance companies, but how does a person work out the cost of dying to themselves (not their family) in any meaningful way?

Anyway, my point is not to get caught up in the poker / gambling view that EV calculation is the total sufficient consideration for real life decisions.

Very very barebones but since the car is only worth a little over a grand I think spending €200 more for comprehensive is mental (pretty much any damage will write it off), particularly since standalone breakdown cover is less than €150 and that's what I'd miss the most from comprehensive I think.

Are there any other reasons for going for comprehensive in my case? (I also pay for full private health insurance for myself, so reckon I'm covered in case of an accident of my own making)

Haven't gotten around to finishing it yet but I enjoyed what I've read so far.

I think we discussed Guns, Germs & Steel on the BBV about 2 weeks ago as well - very entertaining and possibly enlightening read, the only thing to be wary of is that he got a fair amount of criticism from various academics in the aftermath (I am sure all successful popular science writers do) so it's worth checking the criticisms out online to see if they colour what you've taken away from the book.

I've read his Collapse as well, good book IMHO, and have had his The Third Chimpanzee on my shelf for ages, just haven't had the time to read it yet, I've been stuck on Fooled By Randomness for ages, need to stop playing poker / watching the Wire late at night and get stuck in to finish it!

Well, that's where your appendix is! I'd tell you what the doctor did when evaluating if my appendix needed to come out (it did) but since I'm not a doctor myself I think it better to advise you to go see one and find out. Getting medical advice from the BBV probably isn't a great idea, financial advice and asking what movie to see next is fair game but your health isn't.

When mine went, what made the pain worse and how the doctor checked was he pushed his fingers into my side towards my stomach (just above the RHS hip) and the pain was much worse. Now that was 15+ years ago, but you're describing the right area alright.

when mine went, I was eating a load of jellies from lidl, and blamed the pain on them. went to bed for a few hours, woke up in much worse pain, if you press on the pain and it gets worse, get to a doc/hosp asap. Went to hospital with mine at 11pm, they were going to operate next morning but decided it couldnt wait and operated at 4am. ruptured during op.
