Personally I see it as a failing of education that such a book can be so successful. It really makes me appreciative of the education and upbringing which I have received. Undoubtedly, this is the type of book that my ma would love.

I went to a catholic school whereby members of faculty, priests and laypeople, encouraged us to come to our own conclusions, to form an opinion based around logical argument (I know for some that this might sound a bit hypocritical coming from priests). They fully accepted peoples opinions on all matters, religious or otherwise, as long as you had some sort of logical thought process behind your opinion.
I am not too long out of school, and realise that in a different time people didn't have this type of education.

I doubt that is what he means. I think he means that a better education, which he was lucky to have, is more likely to shield him from false logic and scam artists as he has a solid basis in deductive reasoning and logic as well as basic understadings of chemistry, physics and biology as well as some level of psychology.
