The restocking project was just too dicey and the absence of functioning government to protect my investment (primarily from poachers) tipped me against it. Sad really. Anyone who lived in Zim pre-2000 (and especially pre-UDI) speak of it as being heaven on earth.
Africa is the place to be for people like us (i.e. without massive amounts of capital), if you have a few quid in the bank and a willingness to take risks and work hard, the sky is the limit rewards-wise. Of course, you may just get your ass shot off instead!Turning millions into thousands

Learn latin imo
VBASIC (small apps, batch files),SQL(reporting, Database design), HTML (web pages, actually forget HTML as the base and use Drupal/Joomla CMS) would be the most adaptable for someone not based in IT I guess.
SQL maybe not but it can help with logic based arguements and learning.People say I should be more humble I hope they understand, they don't listen when you mumble

on the whole programming v's Latin. I would have thought learning Latin would have been good for you professionally. My dad is a doctor and he learned Latin in School. he thinks that it is a big disadvantage for the young doctors now as none of them know Latin. All the medical lingo is still in Latin and makes it all much easier.
Picking up a programming language to get it to a usefull level seems like it would take so much time. If its a hobby you will want to be able to do a little projects to make it interesting so I would suggest taking up carpentry. One of my mates did it and is seriously into it now and has all sorts of bits that he has built. Admitadley he has some seriously unsafe looking furinture but once he got better some nice looking stuff and about 10 wine racks. He now lives by a new motto of you can never have to much wine stored around your house. Good motto

If you can 'get it' then you will find it a really good read and any type of coding will be fun to do.
There are loads of pdf copies and access to the tools you need are easy to find, if you need any help let me know.

I wanna here more about the attractiveness of Africa as somewhere to live / work, as opposed to somewhere we holiday in...I don't know anyone who lives there and have never been, but would like to some day.
pros:- cheap, very cheap for the basics of life
- being educated to European standards makes you ridiculously well-qualified for work
- great weather (compared to Ireland anway )
- outdoor lifestyle, great scenery and things to do. Hunting, safaris etc
- exposure to many new cultures
- fantastic food and wine, possibly best raw ingredients in the world for many things
- you're rich, hire some servants (everyone I know has a few)
cons:- crime rate is stratospheric, you are quite likely to be killed in a nasty fashion
- insane disparity between rich and poor
- lingering racism and after-effects of apartheid
- reverse discrimation against whiteys
- crappy public services (you can always buy them privately anyway)
- rampantly corrupt governments
- many interesting ways to get killed by wildlife

Mostly based around security, crime rate and access to/ability to remove cash etc out of the country if you needed to as well as it being very difficult to actually get employment unless you were a SA national.

No matter how nice the gazza stip, how much safer the san paolo flavellas or how much improved the ethiopean pirate situation is not much of a chance of me wanting to move down and raise a familly.
I also thought the public transport got fixed up for the soccer world cup and is quite decent now. Removing this from the cons list I dont think would swing it for me.

=====================
Interesting daft links stuck up in the last few pages. I think anyone thinking of buying some property at present need their heads examined if they aren't setting their targets on auctioned lots within a decent Dublin suburb. That any houses are getting sold in the likes of Kildare / Meath to Dublin based workers at present is pure and utter madness. Be patient, make more sacrifices now, and aim to get a foothold in an area that would have been completely beyond first time buyers during the mad years.
For a few people on here who are pulling in a few quid and smart, there really are going to be some opportunities over the next few years (if you get lucky to hold a job that is )."Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally." - John Maynard Keynes

getting on SA public transport is not recommended if you want to make it to your destination alive"We are not Europeans. Those people on the continent are freaks."

I accept that Cape Town is generally safer than most of SA mind you, and the local bus is a country mile better than those mini-buses that fly around the roads

Watching an hour of news on BBC is pretty interesting in the relative sense. The set of rolling North African / Middle Eastern crises will go down as a major chapter in World History books. It is a more modern version of the Age of Revolutions in some respects and will be thought as such - primarily because it will be a useful way to get kids / people thinking about the sea-change in private communication that was heralded through the advent of twitter / facebook / other "social media" formats.
There will also be plenty of other strands to be studied in terms of religious divides / International reactions to the crises / traditional media perceptions and distortions / examples of how ideas like "freedom" and "democracy" differ sharply within different cultural brackets.
Of course, that the coverage we are currently fed manages to miss so much of this is a testament to the how dumbed down and futile modern mass media tends to be."Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally." - John Maynard Keynes
