When I worked in the States I remember a guy giving a description of a former work colleague as a light-skinned black dude and couldn't remember his name, nobody was offended by it.

In the same job there was a guy called Bob, a real unintentionally funny guy. A leftover from the 80's kind of dude, Italian American, he had a personalised plate for his 10 or 15 year old Chevy Camaro that had an I'm a stud ring about it but I can't remember exactly what it was. He was in his mid-thirties at the time and was still clubbing four nights a week, he combed his hair about twenty times an hour. He was a friendly guy though but one day he comes in and says to this other young black guy, 'nice hair Lance, you goin' for an Afro?'

Lance's icon was Malcolm X and he decided to make a big deal of this. The next thing we are all called in early for a meeting to discuss possible racist tensions. It was a real quiet meeting with just Lance who was pretty intelligent pw'ning Bob everytime he said something. The way it ended was great though, another black guy called Dexter just jumped up and said, 'Hey Lance, you cut you hair? What happened to that Afro you were growing?

Everybody clapped, Lance quit three weeks later.

I think it's a little silly when somebody refers to a black person as african-irish or some other nonsense. By inaccurate, not all people of black descent are african. Take Jamaicans for example.

Anyone want to try to explain or defend this nonsense where restaurants charge 12.5% extra for groups of 5 or more ?

Last night 6 of went into FXB's and were seated together when we noticed this bollix We were 50 50 on whether to get up tell them to shove it and go to Tante Zoes next door - we have done that before in another place with that moronic fee - But when the Waitress came around I said that we are two tables a 2 and a 4. So she makes some smart remark that I didn't catch, pulls the tables apart takes an order from the 2 and announces that she'll get back to the rest of us when she can. There was absolutely no doubt in my mind that we were being punished here. Nothing much else happening in the restaurant more than 5 minutes then I grab the manager as he's going by and have to ask him to take the rest of the order.
Food came with growing gaps between the tables which was was not really a problem for us and well worth the €25 saving on a €200 bill.
The food was OK, nothing special and despite us being punished the service was in all other respects quite good.
I am certain that by breaking it into two orders and not paying the 12.5% we were making far more work and hassle for the staff.
