I don't know you, I don't know the life you have led, I don't know the mistakes you have made, I don't know if you even struggle morally. Anything I have is completely meaningless. The original post about all this is because I found peace within myself. I posted here only because as I said this place helped in many bad times when I maybe needed to retreat into myself. The other side of engaging in life has been wonderful and far more rewarding. I still enjoy the conversations here as there are loads of smart people and I feed off listening to how other people are interpreting, seeing, living in this world. Many of those views I feel are shaped by the world rather than themselves and if they took a bit of time they would find different views but I don't know I don't live in their head.

I still wonder at the madness of it all but I am fine with that. It is just who I am. It doesn't mean I can't get lost in a Liverpool game screaming them on. Although I have hardly watched a world cup match. The one time I found myself in a pub mindless staring at the screen with friends recently I ended up turning to an old man at the bar and chatting to him about his life for hours which was infinitely more rewarding. Matt says it all, stop sleep walking chasing things that don't make you happy. Find stuff that actually does if you are not happy.

Just booked a class AI conference in London. A year ago I knew nothing about the area, and now I'm salivating over the topics at this conference.

Our school has now designated three core research areas that all profs need to be part of, and one is around AI. I've been made the director for that centre causing serious ructions, not least from the Information Systems department who would have a natural claim to run an IS related research centre. There has even been nasty comments suggesting that someone whose only experience of AI is through a few (well, 28 courses) online courses possibly lacks the expertise to be leading such a thing. They clearly misunderstand the power of enthusiasm.

Sounds like your misses can fill you in on what your missing since AI and finance is her bag. Well at least that’s what I have put together from you tidbits on here.

I don’t know the ins and outs of academic turf wars but I imagine the IS dept are annoyed that some of the best phds will gravitate to it instead of their area.

This is a serious and presumably massively naieve question but do said phds run the actual research element bossing around masters students with you adding in the organisation and mgt of the center.

Once research is completed do you then co-write research and decide what you spin out to a start up or what gets a patent for sale etc. Is it your job to monitise the countless hours of work?

1. They have never heard of the drive on the right for slow traffic pass on the left. Their 5 lane motorways are a mess of weaving traffic all going at least 70mph.
2. Someone thinks it ok to have a huge Machine Guns of America place right in the middle or orlando. $25 to shoot basically anything
3. They love to drive with full lights on (to stupid to know what dims are for)
4. Valet Parking is just plain silly. The whole country is just a Tip Generating machine
5. remind me to never ever play live cash in an american casino again. It was mind numbingly boaring. There was guys sitting out a whole round not to pay the blinds (for $2) . Please god take me back to all in on the turn with any pair etc.

Whatever about the rest of it, don't think the 1st point is stupid. I've honestly felt the m50 is a lot more dangerous at times rather than those 5 lanes moterway. At least you are more alert to other cars and react accordingly. That's my take anyhow. Once you are used to it then it is safe enough imo.

Fair fucks to the coach imo. I play for Ratoath and 2 new lads joined the team last year (I was also a newbie) the enforcer was given instructions to see what we were made of. I gave it back and wasn't touched again, the other lads rolled around and went for "treatment". I've no idea where they play now
