I'm actually feeling really emotional today. Now that the day is here it feels so fucking massive. I've become increasingly angry over the course of the campaign if I'm honest, the same controlling forces in the background of the state my entire life have thrown everything at this, including paying for the latest type of social media approaches, etc. The lack of fucking shame on them. If we can just get a Yes today, we can largely move on as a modern society. This is about rejecting a terrible legacy since the inception of this state once and for all:

Went to vote at 7:30 AM and there was a bigger crowd in the room than I'd ever seen there before.
One woman and her barely 18 year old son were being turned away, he had checked the register online was on it but wasn't on it there. Then there were 4 more people who had polling cards , there name was on the register and were not being allowed vote because the number on their card didn't match the number on the register. Then there was another young woman who had her polling card but wasn't on their list
One of the people with a mismatching number was a woman who was not able to return later. I pointed out to the supervisors that there was no requirement for the numbers to match and they didn't react very positively to that. So I went to get a ballot, told them I would not show them my polling card for fear they would incorrectly deny me my vote. We agreed that they both know me personally, know where I live and I was willing to show them ID. I explained that they did not have the correct list and should call the returning officer to confirm the validity of the people who were not on their lists. They relented and gave me and people with mismatched numbers our ballots, the (99% no voting) woman with the 18 year old left and they were checking the central register for the woman with the polling card.
Messy but did look like a very healthy turnout.Turning millions into thousands

In the entire history of the State we have only ever removed two things from the Constitution.
In 1973 we removed the special position of the Catholic Church.
Today we can do that again. You are technically correct...the best kind of correct

The reason for that is clear. If they produced a wording then other lawyers would be able to do what Peter Sutherland did 35 years ago and tear the proposed wording apart and show how utterly unworkable it would be.
That, by the way, was the conclusion of both the Citizens' Assembly and the Oireachtas Committee - that any form of halfway house amendment would be entirely unworkable in a constitutional framework. Numerous constitutional academics and scholars have come to that conclusion. The No side won't offer them an amendment to consider because they know that no such amendment could possibly work.
On a side note, and noting what Lloyd has said, I sincerely doubt that this group would support an amendment for "hard cases". This is a classic tactic of recent campaigns - say there's a better way without offering one in the hope you swing some people away from Yes and then if the referendum is defeated claim that the people have spoken clearly that they want the status quo to remain.
Iarflaith O'Neill, retired High Court judge, was a legal advisor to the Pro-Life Amendment Campaign - a forerunner to Iona, SPUC etc - that were directly responsible for creating the 8th. It's not surprising to find he is also on the No side and backs this position.Last edited by Kayroo; 25-05-18, 11:27.You are technically correct...the best kind of correct

Quite glad to be out of country though. I did tell one of my US colleagues we were having an abortion referendum today and she got very excited - "that's what Trump wants to do here!". i.e. remove it.
Eh no, we're five decades behind you guys."We are not Europeans. Those people on the continent are freaks."

I haven’t posted anything on the referendum as I just don’t see how it is even a debate. I see this whole thing as finally allowing those without money access to what those with money already have, which is autonomy and access to better health care. The second class nature of our society for women has a long way to go but you could also argue this is a money/class thing to.
The hysterical stuff about abortion as contraception is just ill informed crap as nobody would choose this if they had any sense at all.
As for the religious angle it just saddens me that we have such a warping of a concept of love and respect that it becomes about imposing views and forcing people to conform.
I was out with a bunch of neighbours cleaning up the village (including the front of the church) the other night in advance of a local funeral (sad case). There were fervent religious types and atheists and we were all doing our bit as a community to show our respect and to offer some token to the bereaved. We need more civic engagement opportunities which aren’t built around religions.
The vacuum arising from the move away from organised religion should be embraced by civic and community pride to engage folk rather than divide.
I hope once this referendum passes we move the debate on to the positive things we could be doing with the same energy that has been put into this campaign by both sides.‘IF YOU had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.” Genghis Khan

Took on the advice here and just took a steady pace throughout, didn't have to stop once which suprised me a lot.
I enjoyed the experience in that shit weather so I can see how you would get into it.

Time of 00:23:30, 4 minutes better off, delighted.
The 5k I did was the staff relay in the phoenix park, fantastic event. Every company has a tent full of beer and the route takes you through the tents so you can cheer your colleagues on. One of the better work evenings I have had for sure. As for the route, some hills so it was definitely harder than the docklands.
