I've wondered how the main character comes across to someone reading the books for the first time. I've only ever listened to the audiobook read by the author himself who gives him a really strong sense of personality - wonder if it matches what comes across when reading on your own?

Seems a bit thin. Realistically they are the only thing even approaching a functional opposition from a party POV at the moment.

It's a bizarre situation, TBH I think an election wouldn't be the worst idea as I doubt anyone wanted a set-up like the current one with a zombie Taoiseach, Fianna Fail as some sort of Greek chorus pseudo-government etc.

I take your point on the importance of opposition though, as PSV has been pointing out the only reason anything ever seems to get done is when Claire Daly and/or Mick Wallace get their teeth into something.

John Oliver a shining example of the reasons Trump got elected. He embodies the American left's complete lack of desire to empathise with anyone who disagrees with them.

When he first started out pointing out bizzare things about America, there was a lot of low hanging fruit. At this point he's given up scraping the barrel and is just pandering to his audience.
