Here are my thoughts of today on this.

Brexit and Trump were both brought about through the votes of non-university educated people. We have got to the stage sociologically where rationality has become our religion, and bigotry and intolerance of unintelligent people has gotten out of control, safely directing our out-group contempt which can no longer safely be directed to races, genders, ethnic groups, sexual minorities, religions.

We are witnessing a revolution of the less privileged "unintelligent". Our Democratic system has always been stacked in favour of certain types of people, at least at the level of the executive, distinguished mainly by the colour of their tie or political lapel. The ordinary unintelligensia representatives being relegated to the margins of the legislature or local politics.

This is true democracy in action, because there are very large amounts of less educated and less intelligent people.

I really like this but another part of me wants to dismiss it as sanctimonious twaddle.

It does seem fundamentally unfair that an uncommitted voter's vote in Florida is essentially worth 10,000 * an Alabaman's vote.

There were solid historical reasons for devising the Electoral College but it does seem outdated in terms of modern politics. For 80% of states, they effectively have no real impact.

But that won't always be true. Check out the 1968 electoral map for example. Hell, check out 1992. Things change over time.

Your own confirmation bias never led you to look further into that number to see that there are a lot more possible Hispanic voters this time than four years ago. So getting more votes is not amazing. Plus a lot of those extra votes came from Florida where a lot of Cubans are unhappy at the Cuban peace deal that Trump attacked.

Listen man, he talked about how hispanics are illegal immigrant rapists for which a wall needs to be built to keep them out of the country. Despite that, only 65% of them voted for Clinton.

The path I imagined for Trump was something along the lines of an electoral college squeaker where he found an unprecedented white turnout to offset latino / black numbers worse than Romney experienced. A map where let's say New Hampshire was a key tipping point, and non college educated white men just turned out in their droves. But that wasn't his path. So the rigmarole of 'this just proves deep inside every American is a female hating racist who likes controversial people who've been on TV' just rings extremely hollow.

Everything about the Exit Polling data screams a tough demographic map for Republican candidates and trending worse. Clinton was just an uninspiring candidate who didn't energise her base and failed to hold onto Obama's support. Sure, Trump performed better than we expected, but not in anyway massively superior overall to Romney. As such, the focus here needs to be on why Clinton lost, why she failed to connect.

She ran on two main points as far as I can see:

A) I'm not Donald Trump
B) I'm a really experienced pair of hands

The second point in particular, was just terrible electoral strategy in 2016 after a primary season that screamed anti - establishment.

Oh and, by the way - we forget the parallel between Obama and Trump. Obama was an anti - establishment candidate who beat John McCain and then a former big state Governor. While I omitted saying it I had in my mind white people without degrees. The breakdown for that is C 28% / T 67% with a swing to Republican. We know that minorities vote Democrat and are more likely to be non-degreed. If you look through the history of the exit polls this is the biggest % of the non-college educated white voters to ever vote for the Republican candidate.

The only swing as big as that is towards Republican for those earning under $30k, which is highly correlated with education (apart from an incongruous religion "something else" swing).

Has there been any changes to the EC system? - seems weird that we were waiting 110 years since the previous time for Gore to win popular vote and lose presidency, and then just 16 years later the same thing happens again. And of the three other times this kinda happened (all in the 19th century) two aren't really the same thing, only the 1888 election matches.

I think they re-weight it between cycles to take account of population shifts.

California is a special case. Or to be more accurate, it's like the rest of the country used to be.

i.e. rich people vote for Republicans (apart from Hollywood types). It was no accident that Nixon and Reagan came out of that state. The State governor is frequently Republican.
