I am trying to hold out some little bit of hope that Denny's smug Ah shure hes not really like that at all, hes a genius businessman and he will only do sensible sane things unlikely as it seems could be part of the story. Brexit and Trump were both brought about through the votes of non-university educated people. We have got to the stage sociologically where rationality has become our religion, and bigotry and intolerance of unintelligent people has gotten out of control, safely directing our out-group contempt which can no longer safely be directed to races, genders, ethnic groups, sexual minorities, religions.
We are witnessing a revolution of the less privileged "unintelligent". Our Democratic system has always been stacked in favour of certain types of people, at least at the level of the executive, distinguished mainly by the colour of their tie or political lapel. The ordinary unintelligensia representatives being relegated to the margins of the legislature or local politics.
....
This is true democracy in action, because there are very large amounts of less educated and less intelligent people.
I really like this but another part of me wants to dismiss it as sanctimonious twaddle.

Taleb gets it
The IYI pathologizes others for doing things he doesn’t understand without ever realizing it is his understanding that may be limited. He thinks people should act according to their best interests and he knows their interests, particularly if they are “red necks” or English non-crisp-vowel class who voted for Brexit. When plebeians do something that makes sense to them, but not to him, the IYI uses the term “uneducated”.

Your own confirmation bias never led you to look further into that number to see that there are a lot more possible Hispanic voters this time than four years ago. So getting more votes is not amazing. Plus a lot of those extra votes came from Florida where a lot of Cubans are unhappy at the Cuban peace deal that Trump attacked.
The path I imagined for Trump was something along the lines of an electoral college squeaker where he found an unprecedented white turnout to offset latino / black numbers worse than Romney experienced. A map where let's say New Hampshire was a key tipping point, and non college educated white men just turned out in their droves. But that wasn't his path. So the rigmarole of 'this just proves deep inside every American is a female hating racist who likes controversial people who've been on TV' just rings extremely hollow.
Everything about the Exit Polling data screams a tough demographic map for Republican candidates and trending worse. Clinton was just an uninspiring candidate who didn't energise her base and failed to hold onto Obama's support. Sure, Trump performed better than we expected, but not in anyway massively superior overall to Romney. As such, the focus here needs to be on why Clinton lost, why she failed to connect.
She ran on two main points as far as I can see:
A) I'm not Donald Trump
B) I'm a really experienced pair of hands
The second point in particular, was just terrible electoral strategy in 2016 after a primary season that screamed anti - establishment."Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally." - John Maynard Keynes

Not sure that's as clear cut as you think. No doubt the higher the education level you go the more it favours Clinton, but it isn't as simple as 'no education Trump droool'."Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally." - John Maynard Keynes

Oh and, by the way - we forget the parallel between Obama and Trump. Obama was an anti - establishment candidate who beat John McCain and then a former big state Governor. He burst onto the political scene and within a half decade of reaching the national level he was President. No lengthy background in politics, little experience, and the feel of a non politician. The times they are a changing indeed."Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally." - John Maynard Keynes

The only swing as big as that is towards Republican for those earning under $30k, which is highly correlated with education (apart from an incongruous religion "something else" swing).

Here's 1960 for example, back when the South was Blue and California was Red:

Every state has a base minimum of 3, and then another amount based on population.
Leads to a few interesting puzzles. Like take California, which is generally regarded as being great for Democrats as it gives them a massive 55 without having to do anything. However it would be technically better if California was split into 5 different states, there'd then be an extra 12 electoral college votes for the Democrats.
Downside though would be that 1 or 2 of the (relatively) poorer of those 5 states might rebel a bit and become swing states and then money and time would have to be spent.

i.e. rich people vote for Republicans (apart from Hollywood types). It was no accident that Nixon and Reagan came out of that state. The State governor is frequently Republican."We are not Europeans. Those people on the continent are freaks."

We need to put the balance back in place and reduce voting rights to only those who have demonstratable intelligence and rationality.
