Yeah? I've tried reading a paper book after losing my phone / tablet / both. It's horrifically hard when you are used to the beauty of Kindle.

Yeah. I think it was NewApproach that emailed me a couple of books and I just couldn't get into them. Borrowed the same books off a mate and got it done. I have never tried a kindle, only my phone and laptop. Maybe kindle are better than I'm giving them credit for.

No, it's only in the last 20-30 years or so that it's really taken off. I'm not saying I have a huge problem with research being commercialised, it's just that they expect the scientist to come up with an idea, come up with a near market application,become the engineer, entrepreneur, marketing manager and so on.
I work on interfaces between materials and what happens at an atomic level when you deposit metals on semiconductors. More recently I've been looking at how they can be used to extract the hydrogen from water. Obviously these areas are hugely important technologically, but I'd rather just do the science and then let the companies figure out how it can be exploited.

We've had this conversation here before - what conversation have we not? - but I just don't get how ebooks undersell paper books by about 80%. Who the fck is reading paper books? They're an abomination compared to the pure excellence of ebooks.

Surely that's mostly due to illegal downloading. Have no way of finding out, but I'd imagine that the number of ebooks paid for would be less than 5% of the amount downloaded and read.
God be with the days when it was sometimes cheaper to photocopy a book, rather than buy the actual thing.

don't think so tbh. most ereaders are directly linked to stores, kindle, nook, etc and make buying ebooks so simple and super fast, most people don't bother downloading illegally.

I think people have a genuine affection for books they're finding hard or simply don't want to relinquish.

I had thousands of books in Dublin. Every single room in my house was coated from floor to ceiling with them. Moved to London and sold the collection due to lack of space

Would have loved to have a big country house somewhere to keep them all, but no regrets really, as i have 15000 books on my PC and when i wanted to reread one of the paper ones i had, i would read it on the ereader anyway.

I have a very nuanced (i.e. fucked-up) mentality when it comes to downloading.

For books, I have never paid for an e-book but will only download those by authors I don't really care about. I will always buy the paper version of a book that I respect the author of.

I download tv shows and movies with zero compunction because, you know, Hollywood.

friends of mine do the below ultra race every year. basically 51 kilometers in the dark (they head off at midnight) in january, from dublin castle to glenmalure valley in the wicklow.

They've done it 5 times so far. best time was about 9h30 minutes
