Checking back in... can anyone catch me up (Dublin and Cork)?

Hi all- Long time no post, and all that (or never, in the case of this "new" forum). Anyway, I used to post as lenny_leonard on boards back in the day- you may remember me as a know-it-all, know-nothing, random David sycophant- and after years out of the game I find myself getting drawn back in of late. The problem is I haven't played regularly since 2005, apart from drunken cash game spin-ups (or to be more accurate, spin-downs) around the country and I've no real idea what's changed since then. When I finished up, the best regular tournies that I remember were the Fitz EOM and the Friday scalps game. I'm based in Cork now but I'm really interested in finding out what's changed about the Dublin scene, especially as I feel the EOM game calling out. Can anyone catch me up?

Also regarding Cork- what are the best regular tournaments around? Best places for cash-games etc? I've played some drunken cash games in the Macau on occasion but don't really know a lot else about the scene down here.

And most importantly- who's still around from the boards scene of, say, ten years ago? Are many still playing/ made their poker fortune/ living in a cardboard box?

Anyway - it's good to be back. Reading through the BBV there's a nice familiarity of nonsense posts and (occasionally) useful information. Some things never change I guess....

Welcome back sir. I'm far from best placed to tell you what's what right now, but in general the standard even in places like the Fitz is better than it was 10 years ago, although there are still plenty of players around who don't put a lot of thought into anything. It is still pretty grim at times as well. The Fitz EOM in Dublin though is still the biggest single day regular event going as you probably already know, but a big difference now is that there are regular smaller buy in events (100-250) with large fields (300+) as opposed to 5+ years ago when all of these events were at least 500 buy in, but I have no idea how many of those happen close to Cork.

I have no idea of what the game in Cork is like.

Don't be afraid of posting in the bbv either

Better off sticking to Cork for tournies anyway, such a soft standard it's incredible. Not sure about cash games. The Macau seems to have regular tourney donaters.

Thanks guys. Regarding tournament starting times in Cork, the Macau website says they start at 8.15; how realistic is this? Also, what time do the tournaments in Gold Rush tend to start? No info on their website.

I've played some cash games in the Macau after a night out, and have to admit I found the standard tougher than what I remembered from back in the day. But that was mid-week and it seemed to be a table of hardened regulars when I was there so maybe it was just bad timing.

The Macau have a good cash league afaik so lads generally go in and play properly. The few times I was there the cash was full of regs so I left it. Start times for tournies are fairly spot on +/- 5mins. Haven't played in Goldrush but they update here regularly enough in the Live Tournaments section.

Thanks for the reply. Just one thing there- you said the 2/5 cash starts at 9.30 and 11.... Can you clarify?

Also, re. your Friday €120 game- what time does that tend to start? What are the numbers like, etc?

Hi Connie - thanks for the info. I've been in a few times already and you were very welcoming, although it was after a night out so I wasn't necessarily very coherent when I was there! But I expect to be in over the next while, probably the Friday monthly game to start. Glad to see the early start times; one thing I used to hate back in the day was games not starting until near 10pm in some cases.

Just to note that the monthly game starts at 6.30pm sharp as there is a 25 min clock all the way. (Friday May 8th is our next one)
