Erm.. to be fair I was assuming he was on part time AL which isn't all that. But even for someone a few years into AL a post doc should pay better than forced 3 months of summer holidays without pay. Maybe we pay our post-docs too much?

I'm full time just get the boot for 4-6 weeks at a time between semesters so I still end up with 80% of above the bar academic salary which is plenty. I'd happily take a long term contract where I had the 10 weeks off a year! Going back to postdoc would definitely be a step backwards in career terms. Even if I get the TIDA I'm gonna keep teaching even though SFI say you aren't allowed.

If your TIDA is successful then the next step could be EI com-fund which is a big step up in terms of funds available and project duration.

Also LOL at not being eligible for SFI early stage! Is there anything H2020 you could get involved with? The Marie Curie stuff is continuing into H2020 from FP7. Though I guess you would need to be part of a "group" in your uni which probably would mean you need a permanent contract!

We are the second highest band in our locality (new build), but ours council has the the lowest council tax in UK.

We pay about £40 per month for water to Severn Trent water, Water has nothing to do with council tax.

There's an inflection point in the UK at roughly €30k as far as I can remember.

Below this point a UK resident pays more income tax proportionally than an IE resident. Above that they pay less.

Yeah I've my PhD 9 years now! I don't have the TIDA, just have the application in. It's based on solar water splitting for hydrogen harvesting. In reality it's not something that's going to turn into jobs for Ireland really. I totally resent the whole commercialisation bullshit in the first place.

If you get something approaching commercial you could probably licence it to toyota who are going "all in" on H2 as a fuel source. In terms of the whole jobs for Ireland thing.. yeah.. well.. we seem to have a lack of solar here for that (though there is a group here who are working on solar efficiencies)

I don't mind the commercial stuff at all but then I'm mostly doing direct industrial work anyway.

I have a spreadsheet set up that has all my standing orders/direct debits on it by date and amount. I then add in things that i have used my card for like withdraw or use card to pay and I add in all my incoming monies as well.

I use online banking to check that I have recorded everything I have spent and I can see clearly when I have money to blow or when I need to tighten the belt.

Works well for me and I have it running for two months at a time and just edit the dates as and when required.

If you wish a blank copy of the spreadsheet with all the formulas on it just holler

I put my bare minimum weekly budget x4 into a seperate account when I get paid, then stick to that budget withdrawing as little as possible once the rest of my wages are gone.

Depending on your bank you should be able to set up a auto-payment online into a savings account. If you use a notice deposit account you have to give 7 days notice for a withdrawal, you get a slightly higher interest, and it makes it an easier habit to save. You can't spend what's not immediately to hand, and without realising it you can save up €€€.

edit: aib do an internet only account, so you still have instant access to the cash, but there's still a barrier to spending it in that you have to transfer it back into your current account.
