Even if the renter decided to downscale to save cash, the owner has that option too, they can rent out the house for and get somebody to pay their mortgage, while to a 1 bed and forget about babies (good luck ).
I wasn't assuming that rates would stay the same either. I fully accept that the cost could well increase, I’d expect them to at some point, but it would need to make up a lot to cover the $850k lifetime rent cost. And the more aggressive rates become over the 35 years, then the more aggressive rent increases would be.
Here's a link that I think Emmet posted before, apologies if it was someone else, that shows the breakdown between rent/buying a home
Our calculator takes the most important costs associated with buying or renting and compares the two options.
It works out at what monthly rent you are better of renting a place rather than buying it, it's built on the theory of "a similar home" and allows you to factor in inflation, rental increases, standing costs of home ownership etc
Now I know the counter argument is going to be around whether or not you can get a place for the rental amount available, but I'd argue that the freedom of renting allows you the chance to downsize/relocate/take advantage of opportunities in housing that aren't there with a mortgage.
Anyway, I'm not really trying to convince anyone one way or the other. It is shades of grey and is dependant on so many factors that each decision has to be taking individually.

Anyway, I haven't spoken more than total 30 words to the bride, and less to the groom but my missus wants me to go.
I am vastly inexperienced with weddings, and how they operate these days, but it seems to me the bride and groom are pulling a fast one here? They are essentially getting a free wedding trip (if enough people book).
Its $1600 per person, all inclusive (and flights). Like the price isn't extortionate for an AI trip to Cancun for a week with flights, and its certainly not outrageous but its not cheap either.
I feel a bit dirty about it. I feel worse that none of Bride or Grooms family are going ('can't afford it'-bride), and only 17 people total, of about 40 +partners have been invited. Its not putting me under terrible strain financially but it may mean missing my cousins wedding or Christmas at home. It is putting the missus under pressure though. She desperately wants to go travel Asia and its a decent dent in her savings for that trip.
Am I wrong to think the whole situation is a bit unsavoury? I am of the view that a wedding should be something as convenient as the cost is reasonable for your friends and family? I'd hate to think my family or best mates or ANY one I invited couldn't attend because I had it in a completely ridiculous venue with a somewhat prohibitive cost and I'd hate it even more to think that my friends thought I only had it there to save me a few bob and get a free wedding trip.
I'm not sure if this is a Canadian only thing, I don't know if Irish people do such things. I know my cousins wedding is nothing of the sort.
Kinda catch 22 now, cos if I refuse to go, then the missus might reasonably or unreasonably ask why should we go to my cousins and not her mate/housemates, or she might say she'd rather go to Mexico than ireland in Winter.
The deposit it 250. I think the best line is to sink that and play the long game? Thoughts bbv collective?
Shouldn't even be a question. There is no way in hell I would go to the wedding in your position. As Mellor says $1,600 to go to a strangers wedding is beyond crazy unless $1,600 is the equivalent of $200 or so. Also if she turns around and asks why should we go to your cousins/housemates then simply say "Fair enough, I don't expect you to go and I have no issue with you not going". I'd never expect a partner to go with me to a strangers wedding and pay $1,600+ to do it. Bit of shitty thing to do really.

Love living with people, or deep down despise each other and the marriage is out of desperation as they pass 35.
I'm not old so my friends are in their twenties
I can understand why they like it, there is a big difference in living with close friends than strangers. It's like those evenings where you hang out with your friends and have a laugh, loving your evening together, but it happens every day. Plus it may be a country thing too.
However I hate people so would like to just live with my cats.

Any GTA V Xbox fans out there can tell me how I can activate the cheats in the game? I somehow luckboxed them for the youngfella the other night, but no idea how i got into that game mode.
The game auto loads into Story Mode where you can't do cheats, and if you enter Online mode, you can't do them either. How do i get to the old school, run around the streets bashing people up mode where i can enter the cheats?

I'm all for the ceremonial (... can't find the right word for marking significant moments not quite rites of passage ...) and all that but once it takes more than two days to find a bridesmaids dress or you spend more than €2 per invitation then you are doing something terribly wrong.
Get married, throw a big party, try to get as many people who matter to you and as many family members as you can (no matter how much you despise them) to come along. Feed them well, try and get everyone to mingle.Something most couples miss is that its actually not all about you. If you push dozens or hundreds of people into sharing a day together it is your responsibility to make sure they have fun. Give them some drink but mostly make them buy their own. Later you put on some music they can dance to and also and this is another most important thing people miss out on there should also be an area for people to sit around and chill and chat without having their eardrums smashed by the awful dance music.
All this can be done for a fraction of what people typically spend.Turning millions into thousands

Normally a Dundalk accent would do it but we need something stronger.
Ring with your best traveller accent or hire one to ask how things are coming along boss.
Ask as your paying big bucks for a few bales of hay for the horses.
Also a few free parking spaces for the caravans and some power points for a couple of generators.
Obv missus be heartbroken butc an then scoot abroad= happieness.
