Watching the Mosconi Cup last night, and the Niels Feijen game. Not sure if you saw it. When he pot the final 9 to win the match, he put his cue down on the table while the white was still travelling and heading towards the cue. The referee, pretty quickly, picked the cue off the table. What's the rules/etiquette there?
Yep, they mentioned it before the first game tonight, said their tweeter feed was exploding with questions about it (translation : ~7 people questioned it).
Seemed it was definitely a mistake by the referee and would have been a foul if the ball had touched the cue. Jim Wych quoted Corey Deull as saying it wasn't a big issue as the ball definitely wasn't heading towards a pocket. (maybe I'm doing Corey an injustice but it doesn't sound like something he'd say)

Ahh, didn't realise it was discussed because i didn't switch on til after 8, but the missus did ask me what i let out an 'Oohhhh' for last night when he did it lol. Yeah the ref, definitely (intentionally) stopped the ball hitting the queue, but it wasn't going near a pocket.

Yo BBV advice/opinions needed, thinking about spending 6 days in New York after the PCA in January, location/places to stay and stuff to do & see that's little off the beaten track.

Am I looking in the wrong place or is it very tough to get tickets to EPL games? Basically want two tickets for a match in London in January, ideally Arsenal but beggars/choosers etc.

Anyone point me in the right direction?

They are surely cleaning up at the min, with people who are following the media right now. Obv wont last long.

A percentage of them are more than likely in a situation that they never dreamed could have happened and possibly held down a decent job at some point and I would imagine wont be homeless that long . But then what about the others who are in and out of prison, drug addicts and have been homeless years

If more places come available now to tackle the problem which I am sure it will now, how can you put a normal person down on their luck , hit hard times in with someone who is a heroin addict .

Dont think it will really ever work as I would presume some would rather sleep on the street than stay in a hostel.

New York is very expensive to stay in. Perhaps use airbnb for more reasonable rates? January will be very cold as well obviously but it's a fine city to do anything in really.

On homelessness in general the government are falling over themselves to be able to say that anyone who wants a bed for the night will have one by Christmas, and while that's all well and good it doesn't tackle in any way the two main issues that drive homelessness I'd say, which are probably drug addiction and mental illness. Without having a better approach to treating these they are just fighting a losing battle to try and fudge the numbers for the short term media storm before it's all ignored again which will just push the can further down the road.

                      London trip report

Went to London yesterday for our annual Arsenal v Southampton match.

Had lunch in l'atelier de joel robuchon. It was fucking fantastic. I may lash something up in the RRV thread later.
We stayed in the raddison Blu on Leicester Square and were in the middle of the premiere of Exodus (christian Bale's new movie)at about 5.30pm. We managed to see him over the barricades. My mate deemed it funny to ask him what was it like playing for Real Madrid. He wasn't impressed.

Match was okay - we won.
Got back to Leicester square at about 11.00pm and went into the Hippodrome Casino. Possibly the nicest casino I've ever been in. Very nice staff. Very safe. nice food and cocktails (if a little pricey). Won a few bob in the poker and roulette stayed there until we couldn't possibly drink any more.

Would deffo recommend the casino to anyone visiting London.

I stayed in the Embassy Suites Secaucus - which is actually in New Jersey, but a 10 mins bus ride from central new york. Decent value for New York and the embassy suites are nice big rooms. It also very close to one of the outlet malls ... There is a happy hour which is free beer in all those hotels with unbelievably almost no queuing at all while its on, if that were here there would be a stampede..

Bit weird because there was so much evidence about cycling and from a brief glance at the ones on rugby, all he has is a view from some French International from a couple of decades ago that the size of today's rugby players isn't normal.
The prevalence of PEDs/Steroids in rugby has almost nothing to do with the size of players today. The general public perception that steroids are for turning you into a hulking behemoth is overlooking most of their scope of application imo.

Teams are probably clever to not have a traceable doping program, but I imagine most have a doctor on retainer to “treat” players at his own discretion. And I’d also guess that most players have received “treatment”, where they didn’t need to know what they were being given.

It doesn’t need to be the limiting step to be a benefit though. If there’s a small but consistent increase from using them, then it’s a PED. See GB track cycling team and marginal gains theory (not specifically PED related btw).

Here’s two studies involving two different inhaled bronchodilators
One suggests no significant effect, the other shows a significant increase.
Objectives: To determine the effect of prophylactic treatment with an inhaled bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory on arterial saturation (Sao2) in trained non-asthmatic male athletes with exercise induced arterial hypoxaemia (EIAH). Methods: Nine male athletes (mean (SD) age 26.3 (6.7) years, height 182.6 (7.9) cm, weight 79.3 (10.5) kg, Vo2max 62.3 (6.3) ml/kg/min, Sao2min 92.5 (1.1)%) with no history of asthma were tested in two experimental conditions. A combination of a therapeutic dose of salbutamol and fluticasone or an inert placebo was administered in a randomised crossover design for seven days before maximal cycling exercise. Oxygen consumption (Vo2), ventilation (Ve), heart rate (HR), power output, and Sao2 were monitored during the exercise tests. Results: There were no significant differences between the drug (D) and placebo (P) conditions for minimal Sao2 (D  =  93.6 (1.4), P  =  93.0 (1.1)%; p  =  0.93) Vo2max (D  =  61.5 (7.2), P  =  61.9 (6.3) ml/kg/min; p  =  0.91), peak power (D  =  444.4 (48.3), P  =  449.4 (43.9) W; p  =  0.90), peak Ve (D  =  147.8 (19.1), P  =  149.2 (15.5) litres/min; p  =  0.82), or peak heart rate (D  =  182.3 (10.0), P  =  180.8 (5.5) beats/min; p  =  0.76). Conclusions: A therapeutic dose of salbutamol and fluticasone did not attenuate EIAH during maximal cycling in a group of trained male non-asthmatic athletes.

Conclusions: A therapeutic dose of salbutamol and fluticasone did not attenuate EIAH during maximal cycling in a group of trained male non-asthmatic athletes.

The use of bronchodilators in athletic competition has allowed asthmatics to participate successfully in competitive events. Little information exists regarding possible bronchodilator use by non-asthmatic competitive athletes. Fifteen non-asthmatic cyclists participated in a double-blind, randomize …

Conclusions: VO2Max and max ventilation increased, Albuterol may provide a competitive advantage for non-asthmatic athletes who might use it.
So that’s quite inconclusive really. But oral and injectble bronchodilators are much clearer. I’m sure you are familiar with clenbuterol, fairly well established as having an anabolic effect.

How the line is drawn is beyond me. So I just listen to what WADA tell me.
Both are naturally produced in the body. Steroids are drugs, creatine is not. Maybe that’s just a matter of classification in your eyes.
But the obvious line to draw is that creatine is readily available in food. Red meat, fish, milk etc. Therefore, creatine mono is a dietary supplement, like whey protein.
But steroids aren’t in food in any quantity. Not even if you sat around all day eating bulls testicles (which produce the hormones), would you ingest any steroids.

My God I love Conor McPherson's The Seafarer. Saw an amateur production of it tonight in a community theatre, and it's a measure of the brilliance of the play that the three times I've seen it have been amateur productions and I've blown away by it each time.

I reckon it's the GOAT Christmas play. On tomorrow and Saturday in Sean O'Casey theatre in East Wall if anyone fancies it, 8pm, probably no need to book.

We don't need to know the reason why the pregnancy is an issue.

“Drinking is an emotional thing. It joggles you out of the standardism of everyday life, out of everything being the same. It yanks you out of your body and your mind and throws you against the wall. I have the feeling that drinking is a form of suicide where you're allowed to return to life and begin all over the next day. It's like killing yourself, and then you're reborn. I guess I've lived about ten or fifteen thousand lives now.”

Looking back, the last season of Breaking Bad really was the worst. And the second half of the season was even worse. And the final episode was even worse again. Poor ending all in all.
I think people alluded to it before, but after Gus Frings, it was impossible to create a better antagonist. There was loads of annoying flaws in the final season imo (the nazi characters as a whole, the Todd and Lydia thing, the cameo for the sake of a cameo by Badger and Pete in the final episode, lots of other things that weren't consistent with Breaking Bad and/or Walt's personality up to this point)

Certainly I don't see the type of testing protocols that could prove otherwise. Heavy gym work; heavy conditioning work; more games than ever before; calendars that run longer than ever before.

That's just what I know of so I imagine it's at least triple that judging by the guys.

It quickly became clear in my mind: not guilty, shouldn't have been convicted. The purported motive doesn't stand up and the time line of when he was supposed to kill her is bullshit. As such, you are left with veritable oceans of reasonable doubt. The most compelling reason for thinking he's guilty is that he was convicted - i.e. there is a de facto presumption of guilt. But when you listen to the jurors in later episodes and consider the magnitude of the defense not following up on a potential eye witness alibi that would have contradicted the prosecution time line I consider that an irrelevance. It's scary that he was convicted on the basis of, what?, that he was an ex boyfriend who couldn't prove he didn't do it. From there the motive was assigned; a shaky timeline was constructed and a lack of solid DNA evidence and reliable chief witness was overlooked. Maybe he did do it. But at some other time of day in a different location. Once you start having to imagine how / when / why outside of the actual prosecution case though, it's ridiculous to convict.

That being said, I think it's still doing a good job of posing the "did he do it" question.

This latest episode was the weakest to date, very little time spent on the only two things we hadn't heard before (Jay's attorney & Adnan's plea bargains), all the rest was stuff about the lawyer we already knew to a large extent, wrapped up by Koenig saying she didn't think the lawyer was too bad anyway.

It must be the worst value for money transport system in the developed world. It's an appalling service. Where do they get off continually raising their prices when they haven't made a single decent improvement in decades. At least Dublin Bus can point to plenty of quality improvements to justify their prices.
