Well, I suppose this fuck up has happened today, and has been happening everyday for the past seventeen years.
About seventeen years ago my wife and I adopted a baby from an Asian American family. While we knew very little details, basically what happened with them is that we learned they were too young for children. I made very little inquiries as (they seemed embarrassed/I didn't want to pry). I was just excited to have a son and couldn't have cared less about the parent's history, besides their current and future well being. So as long as they were healthy and willing to gift me with their child, I really did not go too much into their histories. This was my major fuck up. My wife and I choose to adopt this baby because we felt for the parents and anyone that has been through the adoption process knows that it is much easier to get a non-white baby than it is to get a white one (which is fucked up IMO) and we wanted one NOW and didn't want to be on a wait list.
Anyway we adopt this beautiful, loving, affectionate and incredible baby. It's truly love at first sight for all of us. Around about eight months we start to feel a little bit of guilt about not raising him in his on ethnic culture and given that we live in an area with a major Chinese population, it would be very easy to introduce him to his roots. So for the next seventeen years we do everything we can to honor his ethnicity. We send him to Chinese language courses and by five he's fluent in Mandarin and English, he gets an "adopted" by a Chinese aunt and uncle (they taught him cultural things and celebrate certain holidays and take him for dim sum every couple of weeks). We've been taking him to China every two years since he was eight. We weren't trying to force him to take up his culture as an "other" in our family, but we didn't want to rob him of it or completely whitewash him either. We try and be PC as possible and we thought we were doing the right thing.
He's the best thing that has ever happened to me and my wife. There is not a day were I don't just look at him and smile warmly. I love him.
Anyway we are filling out his college apps/financial aid applications and doing that whole thing. I go to my home office and go through some files and find his old adoption records. I'm not really paying much attention to them and then his biological parents surnames pop out and basically punch me in the face. His parent's last names were PARK AND KIM. FUCK. FUCK. FUCK.
For those of you that do not know, those are Korean last names. My son is not Chinese. Not even a little bit.
He's Korean.
I suppose I just assumed it because we live in an area on the west coast where there are a lot of Chinese immigrants and Chinese-Americans have been living for generations and generations. I don't always assume every Asian is Chinese, but I did assume this for my son. Now I have a seventeen year old Korean son that thinks he's Chinese. Now that I look at him, he looks INCREDIBLY Korean in comparassion to all of the photos of Korean men that I have just googled. Very square jaw, less hooded eyes, very broad build. None of this ever crossed my mind. I've dedicated nearly two decades to helping my son be close to roots that aren't even his. I realize that I've just been fucking up. I feel like a complete asshole to the nth degree. I'm that dumb liberal white dickhead. Fuck.
I have yet to disclose this to my son or wife.
I honestly don't even know if I will.
TL;DR: Assumed my son was Chinese and I've spent his whole life playing homage to his roots, he's Korean.
edit: For all those that may be interest, he has expressed no desire to contact his birth parents (even when asked) and has stated that for now he prefers to just consider my wife and I his only parents.
edit 2: Per request, I will update when I tell my family the truth.
edit3: I know this is the internet and I can't tell people to stop saying such harsh things, but please know I'm a Human and a Dad. It hurts more than I care to admit. I love my son, I'm not a racist.
*additional update: I'm getting a little overwhelmed by some of the negative responses. To all of you saying that every Chinese person knew he was Korean, I will just say this: I told everyone that he's Chinese and I they believed me. Just like if I gave a French person a Swedish baby and said it was French. It may look Swedish, but if a parent says something, then maybe the French would just go with it. Years later when they know the baby is actually Swedish, maybe then it will be a given. But whatever.

The boards forum on building/upgrading is a good resource. They will tell you, and i agree, buy parts from hardwareversand and give them the twenty quid odd to build it. The lessons you will learn by self building are not useful ones, mainly involving fruitless frustrating hunts for mistakes you have unknowingly made. A few sliced fingers/scraped knuckles would be par for the course too when not used to fiddling around inside cases. You could install windows yourself if you wanted some sense of achievement and you dont value your leisure time

Spent the last few nights ambling through Build Your Own PC for Dummies. It's rather good fun, except that its a bit dated (e.g. there's a section on floppy disks; Windows Vista is the top dog computing system) so you need to do your own reading afterwards to see what's happened in computing in the intervening decade or so - quite a lot. But that's rather enjoyable too. Pop onto DABS after reading the motherboard section and then review 50 or so of them and select the best two or three. Add them to the list, then back to the book to find out what the next part of a PC is.

That begs the first two of what undoubtedly be a gazillion questions over the next while.


Context: the eventual beast will be for manipulating mega datasets (e.g. one is 140million tweets and growing rapidly every day - not sure if that even counts as a mega database anymore though), so needs to not creak until the pressure. There's also an element of wanting to build a cool machine.


1. 8gb ram - is there any need to go above this? Thinking Corsair Vengeance. Am I paying extra with no benefit because it has a cool word like 'vengeance' in the name?


2. Planned chip is AMD FX 8-Core FX-9590 5.0GHz 16MB. CPU Benchmark has this as one of the top performing high end chips. It's vastly cheaper than similar powered Intel chips. Why is that? Branding or its actually worse even though it seems the same.

You should max the ram if possible but min of 16gb.

Not sure why AMD are "cheap". They have always tended to run much hotter than intel chips. Not sure if they fixed this yet.

For comparison... Im manipulating files that range between 3gb and 120gb on a system with twin 6 core xeons and 192gb of ram. So it all comes down to what you need and what the size of your dataset is.

Depending on the type of data and the way in which you're manipulating it: If you're just reading large chunks of it and not not doing much processing (which is 95% of uses), you want as much of the database to be in RAM as possible.

As for AMD versus Intel, Intel were miles ahead for a few years but have faltered due to the fundamental laws of physics, and AMD are catching up again. Prices have yet to adjust accordingly. So it's a good time to buy AMD.

I don't think I put enough thermal paste under the processor and it was quite temperamental at times presumably through over heating, although I did recover it enough to make it not a nightmare to use. I've no intention in the medium term at least of using a desktop again anyhow so won't be venturing down that road again for a while, but it is an interesting thing to do, and generally less complex than most people think.

Depending on how your database and software is set up you might get a massive efficiency boost (about an order of magnitude) by running the processing on graphics cards rather than CPU. Definitely worth looking in to. Its all about parallel processing and graphics cards are massively parallel. http://www.cubix.com allows you to hook up 2/4/8/16 extra graphics cards to your PC via a PCI-E slot for huge graphics performance boost.

Not all RAM is created equally but I would guess it's all probably sufficiently similar. Server spec chips like the XEON range require more expensive ram but regular desktop chips will work with whatever the configurator has. More is better.

RAM is cheap, yes sometimes you do need more than 8GB, my PC has 32GB for work. Mostly you need it when doing processing. Yes you are paying for teh cool word vengeance. There is fuck all real world difference to you, get cheap and plentiful RAM.

As far as I know intel are still the best, with AMD having good budget options.

If you put what you want it for on that boards forum they will take perverse pleasure in finding you the best possible value and performance you can get to match what you need. They are actually fantastic, I'm too lazy these days, I'm essentially everybody I knows computer expert which is a PITA.

I too got my PC from hardwareversand and built it. It is easy, it is not like it used to be, it's essentially big cool looking shiny vengeance lego.

Now seeing as you want to do some things with it, I'd recommend getting an intel cpu with a k at the end, this means that you can overclock it, mine started out at 3.3ghz and now runs at 4.7ghz. ZOOOOM. For this you can get a big fancy cooler to sit on teh cpu which looks cool.
I got loads of fans and stuck em in too which was fun, and got a soundproof case.

Yeah it was a disaster back then, nowadays the paste comes preapplied and making a PC is largely clicking things into place. It's quite good and I think people should do it growing up, and at least they can learn about electricity and all that at the same time.

@Flushdraw: if it's managed to somehow infect the windows update mechanism I would completely format the laptop and reinstall Windows. Take off and nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

My friend's laptop has a similar problem, I would like to format it for him and reinstall windows but he doesn't have the original disk. Is there a way to do this without the disk?
