So where will di Maria play then? Rooney/van Persie/Mata have to play. I can't see any of those 4 being wing backs so the 352 is out the window straight away then. If utd did manage to get someone of the ilk of Vidal in then he'd presumably play with him and Herrara in the centre. 4213 is really the only type of formation that doesn't have any of the above playing badly out of position.

If di Maria and Vidal/Khedira are signed then utd are a very formidable unit in the top 2/3 of the pitch anyhow (as well as in goals). Even without a Vidal/Khedira it really is no excuses territory now for utd to get top 4 at a minimum this season.

I think he will eventually move to a 4-3-3 but still play the 3-5-2 depending on what is available and who else is signed. The current best midfield three is Carrick, Herrera, Di Maria. With a new signing like Vidal/Khedira possible (or Strooman in January) then it allows to drop Carrick and for Mata, Rooney and RVP to play up front.

Maybe The Situation will have a better idea, but AFAIK, Di Maria played his best football last year on the left of a midfield three after Ancholetti was forced to move him when they signed Bale? He really cna play anywhere in the last 2/3 of the pitch.

I still think they need a new dominant CB. There seems to be a dearth of these available. I also wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Mata shipped out.

Di Maria definitely falls into the category of "it doesn't matter if he won't fit the system or you don't know where to play him, he's too good to not sign when he becomes available so you just sign him and figure out the rest later". There aren't that many truly world class players in the world, so for a team like Utd, when one becomes available, you sign him and that's that.

Having RVP, Rooney, Mata and Di Maria in an attack (wherever they end up playing) is impressive by any standards. But the gap between United's defence and attack only grows. Rojos will help but another defender is still needed if top 4 is to be a realistic ambition.


As for how United will actually play, it is hard to see how a 3-5-2 will work. Di Maria will hardly play as a wing back. Other than Di Maria, the other three attackers are actually very unflexible as far as modern attackers go. Mata is a number 10 and can't really play anywhere else, and RVP and Rooney are very much strikers. Rooney CAN play elsewhere, but shown on numerous occasions he doesn't like it. 4-4-2 diamond makes the most sense I guess if those 4 players are to play? One holding midfielder in Herrera, Di Maria on one wing and some other United pretender on the other wing.

Maybe Van Gaal is just planning on playing Di Maria as a wing back. If he's willing to try Ashley Young there, maybe he's willing to try Di Maria? He's definitely as good an athlete as Ashley Young (which is really important at WB) so maybe that is LVG's plan.

Won't play on any browser for me. The Internet icon on my phone redirects me to youtube but it just says cannot be played on this platform! Never had a problem on boards either, or any other site.

He has Lamela flying, almost back to his best form from a couple of years ago. Also it seems that spurs now remember where the net is. Dier is a great acquisition for next to nothing, even though he's only getting the chance due to injuries! Some debut last week.
