argh.

His commitment to delivering peace in Northern Ireland was admirable, and his role is often understated when discussions of the Good Friday agreement come about.

His Taoiseach-ical failings almost all come about due to his shortsightedness in reappointing Harry Whelehan. I don't know the reason for his loyalty to him when forming the '92 government (can't understand why Spring didn't raise this as a concern at the time either to be honest, given the shitstorm Whelehan's X case brought about. To think, a different decision to that, Reynolds wouldn't have been done in by Whelehan's appalling handling of the the Brendan Smyth extradition request.

His other failing was to spring Bertie Ahern into Finance and set in place everything that was to come from there, including his shafting for the presidential nomination.

To get that high in FF, especially to be able to avoid complete political destruction by Haughey in the 80's is the mark of a shrewd political operator. But of course, to be that high in FF means you don't just know where the political bodies are buried, you would have had to be involved in digging the holes also.

I think he got out relatively unscathed from the tribunals, which I think will have an effect in the consideration of his political career when looked back upon in future times.

That's pretty much what everyone else has been saying too.

He aided and abetted the two biggest crooks to hold political office in this country but was sound on the economy and did well on the North. Probably didn't have great political instincts. Must dig out my Taoiseach ranking post from some time back, reckon he was probably closer to the bottom than the top though.

Set the variables to Organisation and Year. You'll see a long decline in IRA-caused deaths from their most 'productive' years in the 1970s onwards.

They can sell the story that were never defeated militarily and indeed that is true. Hamas could make the same claim today (how can you defeat an enemy you cannot see?). So, if we try to measure the effectiveness of their campaign versus its stated objectives - it doesn't really look like a very successful effort now, does it?

That's not surprising since by the ceasefire the British intelligence forces had half of them in their pocket. Great bunch of lads they were by that stage, apart from the odd mile off Barret sniping in Bandit Country, and mainland bombing out of the surveillance of the North.

It's very true, I did say the Irish economy would collapse. And it did. The fact our public debt went from ~30% of GNP to ~130% is a pretty good indicator of that.

The only reason our banks didn't collapse (er, except for the ones that did ) was because the EU wouldn't let them. Not because of any underlying strength in the Irish economy. So now we are stuck with high taxes in perpetuity to pay off the dumbass gambling debts of FF. Can both be used at different times? Like in the above example, Man Utd reads as 'they' (so were is correct), but what about times when it reads most like 'the club' e.g. 'Man Utd was top of the league that day'
