IPB Quiz Night Discussion Thread

Just out of curiosity, if there were to be an IPB organised quiz night (general quiz, not poker related) would there be much interest? I know lots of people like quizzes and random knowledge here, I was just thinking that it might be good to have something with actual bragging rights up for grabs. I have thought very little about logistics around this, just wondering on general interest levels first. Would make a change from a poker aspect on an IPB outing.

Obviously this would be the case. Something would be devised such a basket on each table that all phones would have to go into first, and telling tales of cheaters would have to be encouraged. We could hire our old whistleblower friend to enforce it!

100% in, that sounds like an excellent way to spend a night. Maybe if there were some specialist rounds too, to add to the embarrassment of failing to answer questions in apparent areas of expertise.

I don't think that would be fair as obviously the experts would have an edge, although I have some different ideas for rounds. In the interests of sociability as well I would put forward a random team draw to be done on the night. Better craic, and evens things up.

We could have it a sliding scale of costs.

10 teams of 4, top 3 get paid, next 3 get/pay nothing, bottom 4 pay entries that cover prizes for top 3 teams (nothing massive, say 25 per head for the worst 2 teams, 15 each for 3rd and 4th worst).

Logistics problems include:

Where to have it (Dublin obv, but where?)
How much would it cost to have it in a pub?
Need a microphone and speaker perhaps?
Best day to have it? Weeknight or weekend earlier in the day, say 5pm?
When?

If it were to go ahead, to prevent dropouts, would need a deposit of €10 perhaps, refundable if you turn up, paid out as prizes if you do not.

All just thoughts.

With the amount of contacts here it might be possible to get a Rugby/Tennis/Golf club as the venue? I know I could get us my Golf Club but that's in Bray so CHD would not come!

I would agree with having it at 5/6pm on a weekend and also on the deposits. It would have to be a random draw for teams or else OllyK, BrianMc and IonaPaul would walk it!

The only problem I see is not getting numbers, there is always great enthusiasm for these things at the start but numbers always struggle come crunch time.

I was at a quiz recently where everyone had to put their phones in a ziplocked bag in the middle of the table. it worked pretty well!

ziplok bags sound like the right idea alright, cheap and effective. I think somewhere central is best for drinking/travelling purposes. Lots of pubs have separate rooms that can be used for these type of things. Numbers dropping out would be the big worry alright, hence a thought about a tenner refundable deposit if you turn up, although might not be a big incentive I guess. It'd kill it if 40 said they were turning up and only 18 did, but if there wasn't intestest enough for more than 30 in the first place it would be a non runner.

I've just set one for this Friday night as a fund raiser for a local national school parents association.
I'm based in Cork and obviously won't be making it to the actual event itself but if anyone needs a hand in compiling the quiz just let me know.

It doesn't have to be debauchery - the prospect of it may turn many off. Nothing wrong with behaving like adults, meeting up having a quiz, a decent few pints, a bit of craic, bragging rights, and being home in bed at a time and in a state which doesn't preclude you from being capable of getting up for work the following morning.

I have some of the questions done up already, just in case it goes ahead. They won't be so hard as to frustrate most people, but won't be so easy as to have a large number win either. If there were 100 questions, I'd like something like 70 to be a winning target personally. I've been at table quizzes where the winners get 90% of questions right, and they are no fun. I'd like to think you will be challenged Tony.

Loads of pubs will give you the space for free if you schedule it mid-week, as they are guaranteed dozens of customers for the evening. Went to one in the Church on Jervis St a few weeks ago and the bar also sorted out a projector and mic for the evening (I think anyhow). Their downstairs bar is a good spot for a quiz actually, as you won't be bothered by randomers really.

The last quiz also did zip-locked bags for phones, worked fairly well.

The only quizes i was ever in was the flannerys monday night quiz, which permitted phones etc. But always had around 3/4 answers which would be impossible to google.
and a quiz in a pub in the uk, which had a strict no phone rule. Which was a dull excruciating slow painful mess of English bitterness and resentment. as everyone looked at each other with suspicion each time they reached for their pocket or went to the toilet. If the quiz is well written and the quizzies/quizzers (what ever the name for people doing a quiz would be) then phones are generally not a bother. just ask everyone to be on the honour system and switch them off, or implement a point deduction system like a life line to use a phone, but get less of a score etc.

Ideally we'd do it on a Saturday at 6pm somewhere, but finding a venue then that is central that wouldn't cost loads would be tricky I'd imagine, especially since I'm hardly likely to do exhaustive research on it. Even Thursday might be less than ideal, hence why most quizzes seem to be on Monday to Wednesday.

I never said it would. I said one of 2 Quizzes I went to had a no phone rule and was dull the other didnt and was fun. The fun one was fun cos there were questions that google could never answer. And the other wasnt because people were more interested in looking out for people using the phones seemingly just so they could accuse someone.

My thinking is that if someone wants to take or make a phone call they would leave the room and not be allowed back to their table until the round is over. if it happens though we will make proper rules about it all anyhow.

friends of mine actually did a private quiz which I obv joined in diceys last night which was news to me as would never have thought there. not sure if they had to pay but pretty sure they didn't so I reckon I could ask anyways if wanted(after you walk past the bar go left and its the room on the left of the cloakroom). just spitballing as I like the idea of a piss up
