    A fair point, but you need seasons. Yeah Iago is in a relatively seasonless place and might disagree. And I've talked about Phoenix before,which is utterly seasonless just degrees of hot.

    But there is a lot to be said for warm summers, fresh autumns, mild winters and showery springs. Vancouver Island is the spot for me I think.

      I’m not sure people (myself included) consider how their costs will change over time enough. Sure, you might be happy going out less but at the same time your private healthcare premium will be jumping by at least hundreds of € a year and that will eat into a lot of those savings (I’m seeing that already at my tender age and with…touch wood..very few real problems so far)

      and he should 100% be drawing back principal over time but that’s back to the question about inheritance and what you want to leave behind.


      we could also all drop dead tomorrow so there’s also an element of do all the things you want now and let future you enjoy beans on toast if that’s what it comes to!

                  A big consideration for me, far moreso than finance is health. My youngest will only be 21 years old when I'm 65. The joys of having kids late in life.

                  There's a whole lot of life experience to be had beyond that that I want to be a part of.

                      That is one of the best conversations I have ever listened to on health/fitness.

                      I like many came out of the lockdowns in fairly bad shape and at the start of last January decided to try and put things back on a better path. I mainly focused on strength training and used calisthenic choices where possible. I use weighted dips as the main compound movements for the chest and pulls ups as the main back movement, for example, supplementing with dumbbells/bars. Odd choice I am told but I just much prefer doing body weight stuff where possible and enjoy it far more. I had to have a couple of minor operations throughout the year which put me out of action after each for about 6 weeks. It is a little frustrating seeing the progress be set back but you ramp up much quicker than when starting out.

                      I have mainly focused on recomping while getting stronger which has worked really well and pleased with the outcome but I have completely ignored any kind of conditioning/cardio. I'd actually had an aversion towards it as in the past whenever I had got out of shape it would have been the first port of call and over the years if you keep going down that well as you get older your body composition ends up really bad.

                      This pod helped me clear up many things in my own head around what I am lacking and really looking forward to the next few episodes with his advice on how to move towards a more general level of fitness that encompasses a more holistic approach.

                        Yeah its excellent. I'm not sure how I feel about Huberman in general, still trying to see if he is Malcolm Gladwell for the gym bros, but he does get some great guests. This one is especially awesome.

                        I'd be fairly cardio allergic too, no time for it. Find it incredibly boring but it's a necessary evil, just in the scheme of things 1. be not fat. 2. be strong. 3. be cardio fit,I never get passed the be strong part.

                        I've found the single biggest difference to my sleep, mood and overall fitness has been eating well and not overeating.I know that sounds simple but overeating for me ends up feeling gross, then eating cos I feel gross, then falling off the wagon and its 3 weeks before I get back on and then DOMS again and fuck me its pathetic. So being disciplined in diet is my way to keep everything else in check.

                        This episode of the pod though is enlightening on lots of levels for me too.

                              My grandmother had a locked room full of ornaments and furniture that was saved for visitors (not sure what kind because I never saw it used).

                              As I get older it gets clearer that just about everything is a trade-off of sorts, whether it's time, focus, energy. An extra room like that might cost you a year in terms of after-tax pay. A room that's never used

                                  Yeah, a really good pod (60% through it). The twins thing was really interesting, how the untrained one was scoring better on strength tests.

                                  Opened my eyes a little too about the 'dangers' of specialising.

                                  I don't do anything other than running. A mild peppering of strength work but very very little.

                                  Tend to always have a target race that I'm either training specifically for or base training towards. In your late forties you don't have a lot of room recovery wise for a more broad approach. A way around it is to do hard strength workouts on the same day as hard running sessions so your recovery days are just that but I struggle to fit that in.

                                  Should aim to fix that.

                                    Having to go through the DOMS again as you ramp up is a killer. Funny enough the worst DOMS I have ever experienced was after a hike a few weeks ago. I joined a couple of mates on my first ever decently long hike. Obviously cardio was an issue but I already knew it would be to an extent, but I have been doing what I thought is a decently functional leg day which incorporates Lunges, Deadlifts, Goblet squats, Bulgarian Split squats, etc. The next day after the hike I have never felt DOM's like it in my legs which I was not expecting. I could hardly walk for two days. It is crazy to me how different that kind of exercise works the muscle to the point that it is almost like a completely different stimulus given the DOMS I experienced from it.

                                    Agree completely about the diet. I read that to maintain the current state you only need to do 1/7th the volume you need when looking to make changes like add muscle. Even knowing this when things go off the rails diet-wise and add a little alcohol back into the mix the wheels just come completely off the tracks and I can't get myself to do a workout until I put the other stuff right.

                                      Would hazard an unscientific guess that you're recruiting different muscle fibres and different metabolism in the two different activities.

                                      Fast twitch anaerobic for your workouts and slow twitch aerobic for your hike.

                                        Yeah, that makes sense in terms of one being for endurance mainly and the other for more short explosive type work. I hadn't really considered it in this kind of way before listening to that podcast.

                                        I am not married to any kind of training and certainly don't have the love you seem to have for running. I exercise because I know it is good for my mental health, it makes me feel and look better and is good for my overall health. So I am actually really happy to have come across this podcast and hopefully after the whole series I can put together something that better addresses all of those things without the current huge holes in my routine.

                                            This. Its hard to remember this some days when Im in bits and I really really don't want to go.

                                            But I legit reckon I have two pathological issues, 1. I'm entirely sure I'm addicted to sugar, and 2. I'm almost certain I'll never be "happy" with my body, but I know exercising and keeping relatively in shape means I'm not unhappy with my body. It's an interesting thing, but something I think has probably affected my life since I was very very young. So the mental health benefits of exercising for me cannot be overstated.

                                              My wife is convinced she has this and its genuinely a woeful thing, whether true or not. All types of eating issues associated. She's not overweight in any way, but everything seems to be mediated by her sense that any action or decision might eventually cause her to pounce on a bun. Its just so hard to escape sugar, and indeed its a good thing in many ways. I can just 'not drink', while she is stuck trying to duck and dive around literally every food type.

                                                Am cutting back on sugar gradually. Main motivation there is I think it will help with inflammation issues.

                                                Starting out with cutting down on sugar in tea/coffee Reducing the amount of bread by approx half.
                                                Booze already have cut back by at least 33%.

                                                Dark choc for the sweet tooth as it's hard to eat much if it.

                                                Off for a walk/excercise now in a few mins with my handy headtorch for the park

                                                    A friend of mine was in a similar situation to you and ended up with the employer having private detectives taking photos of him in the shops, out socialising etc and producing these in court to prove his condition wasn't what he claimed. 2 teams of medical experts facing off. Different condition entirely to yours.

                                                    Luckily they caved and essentially paid him off just to go away and he's been retired ever since. Was quite the ordeal at the time though. Sounds like your guys are much better.

                                                            The job involves shift work, everyone knows night work aint healthy, interferes big time with sleep and recovery. over 22 years in the current role and was 5 years in a previous job, also doing shift work.

                                                            While i was mouthballed from jan 21 i lost a bit of weight, had a few tests and generally felt better about life overall, obv had a positive impact on everything, wont go into too much detail but basically will eventually need another bypass, 2 of the 4 grafts i got 10 years ago have failed and there isnt anything they can really do until i really need the work done, you dont get 3 bypasses it seems, you only have so may donor veins to harvest.

                                                            Cardiologist was happy to tell me to basically give up work, if i could afford it, and take it easy...hes the expert, wasnt complaining.

                                                            The job has an fallback to an insurance company who will take over paying me, through the company payroll so i keep my benefits. The majority of anyone i know who has went down that route would have been 60+ with maybe afew years left till retirement, company doctor told me not a chance they want to take me on for the next 15+ years...thats where a really really positive, for me, report from cardiologist came in really handy, he stated his opinion and it would be very hard for them to disagree with him, im hoping.

                                                            They may come back and say no, we will cross that bridge if it happens, but its looking like they take me on, its usually a 12 month at a time, new updated medical report every year and we get on with it.

                                                            Feeling pretty good in general, this was difficult to get across to the independent medial bloke i met last month, if i had a missing arm sitting in front of him it would have been easier to portray how i cant do my job anymore, with my issues it was a bit harder, but hopefully he understood.

                                                            All i need now is to cut back on the booze and keep losing the weight, still a fat fuck but have lost around 15kgs in the 2 years, 132 at my heaviest, 115 now.

I don’t know maybe I was just expecting something a little more mature because his interviews are good.

                                                                        My Brain: "I know this thing which will improve your quality of sleep, reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. improve your memory and brain function, protect against many chronic diseases, make you feel and look better along with a host of other good things, and will release chemicals directly into your brain during and after doing it that will regulate your mood and help you feel happier. It also has little to no side effects.

                                                                            I’d echo what Keane said having seen him years ago.

                                                                            That said, I don’t think Keane was suggesting the recent shows contained any of his previous material but it was very similar in style. That seems a fair assessment to me.

                                                                              One of the great things about walking is there's fuck all preparation needed. Pair of runners and out the door.

                                                                              Once you're out you start enjoying it immediately and from there you can just drop and do 20 press ups or break into a jog or stretch etc.
                                                                              ANd these tag on excercises are far easier to do when you're already out and about and you've got to the local park or green area.

                                                                              I do excercises at home but find it far more successful to do it once I'm moving already.

                                                                              And I find motivating myself just to move and get out the door is a simple "ok, put the runners on grab the fleece and go"
                                                                              Just a few seconds of "let's do it" and you're out.

                                                                              ​You don't need much gear or gym membership just 30 seconds of willpower.

                                                                              And I'm a world class procrastinator.

                                                                              It's great getting out early too.
                                                                              Was out at 6.45 this am and it was fantastic.
                                                                              Frost and crispy air and quiet with the colours of the dawn after.

                                                                                  Great post, 100% it is just about that initial kick and getting started. You normally feel great once you get going and never regret it once you are finished and it is just about that initial kick. One neat little phycological trick I learned from this podcast recently is to ask yourself the question out loud. "Are you going to go for a run now?" You are far more likely to answer yes and go do it than when ruminating in your head.

                                                                                  I guess the point I was trying to make is why I am not jumping out of my skin to do this thing every day given I know all those benefits I listed. It doesn't seem like something which should require all that much willpower when you weigh up the net positive effects on your life. Now some days I do look forward to it but I would say they are in the minority by quite a margin.

                                                                                          Countdown Champion of Champions series is top class stuff, freakily good standard, the final is underway on C4 now, +1 at 15:10 and if you are interested it's probably worth catching the finals series from catch up on the web

                                                                                          Colin Murray has taken over as presenter and that has been a game changer for the show, he's been excellent compared to some of the twats they have let present it over the years.
                                                                                          Despite skipping thorough all the non game bits other than Suzie's always excellent bit the likes of Anne Robinson made it almost unwatchable.

                                                                                                              Family life forces me into training early morns but I love it so much.

                                                                                                              The productivity boost you get for the whole day. Feeling fully woken up and alive over your coffee and breakfast after it. I've also noticed my HR is usually about 5bpm lower running at dawn than it is in the evenings.

                                                                                                              You're right about the motivation though, it's so hard at this time of year to will yourself out of bed, but again you're bang on, it just takes a little push and you're away.

                                                                                                              The middle of Summer though is absolutely glorious. I remember running the canal at about 5.15am one June morning. Vest and shorts on and the Sun beaming. Heaven.
