Took out the whetstone for the first time in yonks (isolation gets you doing stuff). Spent the first half-hour fluting about and ending up with no knives sharpened. Simply forgot how to do it. Youtube to the rescue and all 6 knives are razor-sharp 30 mins later. It's far superior to any of the sharpening tools you'll have in the kitchen. Found it oddly meditative and fixed some minor damage to a couple of blades.

If anyone is interested in getting a whetstone you need two stones (or a 2 in 1 stone like mine). The first one is to grind, repair and set the edge, I use 1000 grit. Anything higher is too slow to grind and really only used for finishing. Anything less is probably too harsh and suitable for repairing significant damage ie chips or dents. The 2nd stone is going to be in the 4000-6000 range and this is for the last stage of finessing and smoothing the edge. There are higher grades but I don't think they're necessary unless you're highly skilled or becoming an enthusiast. I have a 1000/4000 combo fwiw.

Wife wanted to buy that coffee machine on Thurs or Fri. She thought I was mad saying to wait until Sat.

His restaurant is just pure class. Had my birthday lunch there (seafood platter for 2) and needed to be wheelbarrowed home. The platter was epically sized but more importantly the quality was outlandish. Looking forward to making that pilgrimage again at some point this year.

I got the book for Christmas. The burger jumps out alright, must make it over the next day or two. IIRC he uses easi-singles for the cheese.

Can you share the youtube link if you found one particularly useful? I have a whetstone that I've never ventured to use but my knives are in poor order at the moment. I was thinking of asking the local butcher if he might sharpen them for me. I presume they have the equipment.

This guy gives a pretty good overview without leading you down the rabbit hole. The black sharpie tip is very helpful if you're doing it the first time.

Jesus christ. Doctors and nurses really are too good for this world putting up with that fucking nonsense.

Should be a case that if you declare that you do not want or need treatment, you're sent on your way. Fucking morons. I'd also bring in a hefty fee to treat anyone unvaccinated who presents with covid. Wont get vaccinated but then wants medical treatment while giving it loads is mind boggling stuff.

Jesus Noel. That's fucking scary, your situation I mean.

Can I ask what sort of symptoms led you to A&E?

I ask because I was close to going myself the other day, NYE I think. I came out of the toilet and out of nowhere felt hit by a train with tiredness, then felt the breathing tough, which led to a panic attack, which fucking led to shallower breathing.

This is definitely worse than April for me.

I lifted the 4 year old up to bed one night and my heart was pounding from the effort, fast breathing similar to a hard effort run. Felt like an asthma attack.

I woke this morning feeling the worst of it is over.

Coughing up a lot of shit still, but that's fine, that's end game stuff.

                              Thank fuck.

Anyway, it was grim enough place. Maybe 10 or so cubicles with half of them being admitted patients who were being kept there for disease control or capacity issues - meaning 5 cubicles for triage and dealing with those coming in the door. What I witnessed was pretty damn frightening on a number of levels. (My cousin is an ICU specialist in a Dublin hospital and I'd a good chat with her about things the weekend before Christmas so I was partially ready for what I saw).

Anyway, just a few examples of what I saw...

One punter comes in, this guy is gasping for breath, i look at him and thank my lucky stars I am not him. I had been taken to a cubicle for bloods, he wasn't there when I left but was there an hour later when I returned. "Are you waiting here long?" he enquires. 8 hours I say "this is some bullshit, you'd think they'd just get on top of things" says he, who I am certain is there less than an hour. He gets his initial triage from a nurse who checks his vitals and takes his basic info. Standard stuff. He declares his hand with a positive Antigen test 48 hours previously. Said he rang his doctor complaining of shallow breathing and a pain in his chest so his doctor said go to A&E for an ECG that he doesn't want to have to deal with this covid shit. Nurse doing the triage sets about doing a PCR (which everyone who passes through the door gets). The nurse explains that the tests are expedited but it may be up to 2 hours before they have the result and pending the result of that they would proceed down a diagnostic pathway. "2 hours, what's the bloody delay, sure i have tests that give results in 5 minutes, this place is a joke". At this point the nurse enquiries about his vaccination status (having been in there for long enough this was a standard question for all as it obviously helped with diagnosis and outlook). "Not vaccinated", no problem says the nurse, is there a specific reason? (again, having been there i understood the question was based on is there a medical reason for non vax). At this point he sparks off "not vaccinated, don't need it, that's it - no more questions". The nurse explains, as politely as possible that she cares little for his beliefs and only cares from a medical perspective. It's lost on him. The nurse departs, his phone rings "Yea, a joke, I am going to leave, told the doctor, 3 days feeling like i am having a heart attack, they just need to do the ECG and let me off".

Another lady comes in, she seems reasonably ok, gets triage. Is vaccinated. It's established that she is actually a member of the cleaning staff in the hospital. She deteriorates reasonably quickly, An hour later shes on a trolly, hooked up to oxygen, and getting chest xrays to help understand the extent of her plight.

My cousin told me about an interaction she had with an anti vaxx zealot. On oxygen "despite not needing it" (according to the patient). She's deteriorating rapidly enough. They have the conversation with her that they need to intervene urgently and intubate her. Patient says it's a hoax and doesn't need it. She gets told she has a few minutes to make the decision as she'll be dead in 30 minutes otherwise. So take 5 minutes to phone somebody close to you to tell them you love them and what's happening, or take 30 to phone as many as you can to make your funeral arrangements.

I've more, but will save some for later. It's mad. As somebody pointed out, there are a cohort who tell you that 2 weeks of Omicron data from South Africa is sufficient to tell you that it's a soft variant, but wont take 12+ months of Vaccine data to understand that. I guess whatever your poison is, etc..
I'd hazard a guess that if you had the strength you would have pulled that selfish cnut out of there by the throat

Anyway get well soon -hard to kill the bad ones I believe

You should just do a Hitch-graph where the X-Axis is 110kg rather than 0. You'd have lost about 90% of your body weight that way.

Booked it mainly for location ie clonakilty and I couldn't find any bad reviews on it. Have to say I can't fault the place. From staff to the food, really good if anyone is thinking of ever visiting West Cork.

I now know a small bit about everything, but kinda where to think about where to go for all the more detail. As in, there's far less mystery involved in how a house works. It depends on who is delivering it, but found the whole process of doing an evening course very fun also. Starting a woodworking course this month.

Including one on understanding angels and what you closest angel was. It was mainly in a class with foreigners trying to work out how the fuck Irish houses work and housewives trying to outmanouveur their do-nothing husbands. Its a fun vibe, these evening learning classes. Bike maintenance would be excellent as you could probably get all the way up to expert in enough time.

Its shocking how the hospitals do that, try to make people feel guilty for looking after their wellbeing. Anything chest pain and its instantly to the hospital.

The dissuasion thing is something we picked up from the UK, this idea that we might be hassling the health system for turning up, is rooted in their elites doubt that when Aneurin Bevin (misspelled name) made the health service free that the poor people would freeload off it. So all the rightwing news at the time started pushing all these stories about freeloading poor people who were apparently so freaking bored they were getting their kicks from spending hours in A&E. Its all made up nonsense.

In every other proper country you are actively encouraged to attend if you have even the slightest doubt as you aren't an expert on what is happening.

Always be the first to hospital if you have any doubt. Hope you are well now. And jaysus gab, we're going to have to take out institutional insurance on your voice!

Do think there's some sort of case for primary school taking a week or so to let all the kids get vaccinated.

Only had it properly once and wow it felt woeful until it left. Had to run out of a meeting room, muttering excuses, then popped on a podcast on the way home that happened to be funny and that lifted things a bit, and got home and started to breathe normally. But have thought about it loads.

If it ever occurs again its exactly what xanax was made for. Xanax is gods gift to god. But hopefully it doesn't occur again is the main thing. Strange how you felt it at home though in a calm setting. I wonder if you are maybe putting too much pressure on yourself at home? Maybe to be the perfect father, husband, etc. Because there aren't many other obvious stress points in the home at Christmas apart from that. Just rambling out loud.

Like you go for ECG and nurse frowns slightly and says something about doing it again due to anomaly etc. This information of course is greeted by you in "both eyebrows raised please elaborate" mode
Then it's on to someone else in the chain asking the same questions and you're scheduled for a stress test (thanks, but I'm stressed out enough as it is!)
"Oh, you went into a left bundle block" they say casually the assumption being you have just completed your PHD in cardiology and are ready to leap in with a diagnosis.
"Nothing to worry about" they say while frantically gesturing to the nurse to stop the stress test immediately
The only time someone took a few seconds was after the ultra sound and he kept getting interrupted and then kind of wandered off to request a heart monitor for me and never came back.
After the angio the Doc just stick's head round the door "arteries are fine, could be lungs go back to your GP"

Felr like I had just landed on a snake on the top level of snakes and ladders.

Mostly it's just like having the air snatched from you for a few seconds or a few minutes of palpitations.
GP prescribed pills for it so it's no biggie.

You can't reopen schools properly if half your teaching staff are at home with covid or close contacts.

Side note; I've long thought that overexposure to teenagers is the reason for ASTI's general grumpiness. The INTO, who are exposed to children in a more human stage of evolution, seem by comparison to be a more reasonable lot. Same way that cops get corrupted by daily exposure to criminals.

Second child becomes a teenager tomorrow which may or may not be connected.

I've had to figure out an optimal sleeping position that minimises them. Can only fall asleep lying on my right with my arm stretched out. Any other position and I'm kept awake with breath gasps and chest bangs.

I know xanax is a solution, especially for the sleep thing, but I've taken it a couple of times and it affects me too bad on the other side. Too groggy trying to get up.

Usually caused by fatigue. I've had it and your brain does go straight to 'heart attack, aggghhh!'.

We had a Finn staying with us . He had a cold but before he flew back tested negative. Seems to be pot luck. We were all together at Christmas so I'm thinking maybe I'm typhoid Mary. Maybe I had it weeks ago but was a symptomatic etc..

Thinking we will have this more intense flu/cold every year until out immunity figures it out I'm optimistic for 2022 for sure .

Was rushed to A&E a few years ago with a suspected heart attack in the early days of it. Amazing how powerful your mind is at convincing you you're about to go out with a bang.

Although I did leave there that time with a sense of shame for wasting their time, it immediately got easier to deal with when I knew it was 'only' anxiety.

They mostly happened at night when trying to go to sleep, bangs in the chest, weird stuff. Absolutely terrifying at first. Even after discovering it was anxiety it was still quite scary. Your mind can really fuck with you. You'll think some nights 'maybe it was anxiety before, but this time it's the real thing, fuck, fuck'

Or, you'll get used to the pattern of physical symptoms so your brain mixes it up a bit with something new to keep you on your toes.

I still get them at night going to sleep but have no fear around it now. I've had to figure out an optimal sleeping position that minimises them. Can only fall asleep lying on my right with my arm stretched out. Any other position and I'm kept awake with breath gasps and chest bangs.

The other day the worry about my breathing, coupled with googling serious Covid symptoms sent me into a spiral.

I add this hesitantly, but that not being able to sleep on the side was the only symptom of my heart murmur caused by one side of the heart working too much. Heart murmurs are normally nothing, only rarely leading to surgery like in my case.

Every time I go to the vet they ask me, do you know your cat has a murmur 5 seconds into the check up. Try the vet.
