The working less seems like such a no brainer. A move towards a four day week seems like it would improve society so much. Some people posted about the dangers of mental health problems during the current time. The other side of that is the number of people talking about a reduction in stress from reduced working hours due to everything that surrounds getting in and out to the office and overall impact that has on free time and relaxation.

Japan actually reported a reduction in suicides of 20% in the same period last year.

We don’t really consider China to be communist anymore do we? Unless Laos which is probably the most communist country left has turf fired stations like some sort of backwater I don’t think they could be huge polluters.

I admire your ability to live solely in a rose-tinted eighties where a combination of Reagon, mutually assured destruction, and trickle-down economics will keep us safe from the evil Ruskies.

Very similar experience when I lived in Leuven. Always something going on, very little commuting, general contentment about the place. Something a bit sterile about it all at the same time.

Guy hits the BBJ online. His share would have been $55k. He got disconnected. He got nowhere with the sire. He has since been kicking up a fuss on forums and social media but getting nowhere. Joey Ingram picks it up and the site pays out the next day. The power of having someone with a big presence online on your side. The other guy in the hand gets $100k and probably isn't vene aware so he will get some surprise.

Capitalism is the least worst system we've ever had, if you want to put it that way.

To be honest, I find it ironic that a person who was a pro poker player for such a long time would be decrying capitalism at all. I'd say you're far more of a capitalist than most tbh.

There is something completely pathetic about Twitter trying to snip away at the GOAT Twitter user long after he seized the universe. It comes across as far far too little too late. They won't have the balls to hold the line on this for long either imv. The world of societal discourse they created is shit, and it is beyond their control by design.

I'm an absolute beginner. Only completed 18 holes twice and 9 a handful of times. Generally I'd always play pitch and putt a few times each summer. I'd imagine it gives me a basic idea of how to hack my way around. Took a break from GAA this year so plenty of free evenings and weekends were guaranteed before the pandemic set in. Not a bad way to spend a few hours.

wouldn't be far off that myself, but making a conscious decision to put in the work and improve this year. ideally looking to get around in 90 (there or thereabouts), so a long way from good but it would be a start!!!

I think there's always a bias when people compare times in history. Things from the past are over valued, and there's little value placed on things in the present.

Imagine how different a quarantine would have been in the 90s. Right now you've instant access to any media on the world, free communication, free access to education, school colleges and most businesses are able to continue, no food shortages.

Automation and technology just keeps creating more and more consumer surplus and throwing out new jobs in new areas.

This club told me they had over 30 new members since reopening, which is a decent increase to say the least! most clubs are struggling, so i'm sure they're delighted with increased demand.

Imagine how different a quarantine would have been in the 90s. Right now you've instant access to any media on the world, free communication, free access to education, school colleges and most businesses are able to continue, no food shortages.

My new house is on the verge of a town, I was certain it had fibre broadband but alas it does not. Went out to visit the current dwellers, we move in at the end of June. On wifi they were getting 8 megs download speed when I was there. The man of the house told me it's around fourteen regularly enough.

Anybody here using them or any other provider that gives you 30+ megs download consistently?

Imagine might be great for some, but rubbish for others because of a hill or badly situated tree even. Data caps is another big one to watch for with all of these providers too. I presume you checked things like Eirs fibre rollout website, similar for Siro and the likes? Depends what size town it is too in terms of likelihood of being properly served in the near future too I guess if nothing currently there or imminent.

That fibre rollout map makes no sense. When I look at my new house it's yellow and every house in the area and it's all surrounded by blue then which suggests that there is fibre broadband but it's not connected to the houses? I'm very confused by it. I'll send you a pm and see if you can make sense of it if you don't mind?

I've looked at it plenty when moving a few years back and for family members to see if they are or will be covered. If a house is new and done since their plan was done up it can get skipped too. Weird rules apply it seems.

Keep predicting disasters and whenever someone points out that one hasn't happened double down on the prediction. Eventually disasters happen (they always do) and you stand there saying "I told you so" and appearing like a clairvoyant. You pay no price for being wrong but get a huge incentive for being right once in a blue moon. Long term predictions of technology, society and the weather are (historically speaking) absolutely pointless.

My new house is on the verge of a town, I was certain it had fibre broadband but alas it does not. Went out to visit the current dwellers, we move in at the end of June. On wifi they were getting 8 megs download speed when I was there. The man of the house told me it's around fourteen regularly enough.

So I've been looking at other options, Imagine seems to be the most likely to give me better speeds but I'm getting mixed messages about them. Anybody here using them or any other provider that gives you 30+ megs download consistently?
I'm using the phone line option, I have 30Mb fibre outside the door that I have have been waiting to take a tree down to get installed but at the moment I'm consistently getting between 5 and 10 down which is ok and importantly very reliable while the neighbours who are using the fibre are all the time complaining about downtime and poor speeds at peak times. According to the Eircom engineer who was out recently I'm the only one using the old tech so I have no contention.
The tree is going next week but I'm not sure I'm going to be rushing to switch unless I have a reliable backup.
