Loved the first series, wife didn't watch it and I know she'd like it so I'm waiting on her to catch up before moving on the SE02... If she even threatens to look at that desperate housewives clone that Hitch is pimping I'll move on without her

Somewhat of a weird one in work that has me quite annoyed.

Applied for a promotion - it would take me out of the local branch and to a regional level. It's a dual role where I'd be over all operations for my product in Europe plus I'd be responsible for our 6 Gateways plus fully over a small part of the product for all of Europe (sales/bid/retention, etc).

Went through a two interview process which I felt went well and I was offered the role last week.

Now here's the rub - the uplift is practically non existent - I mean, the monthly after tax uplift wouldn't even cover my wine purchases at the weekend I was baffled (even shocked) when I got the verbal offer and said it wasn't where I thought it should be and I'd have to think about it. On Friday, I went back to the guy doing the hiring (European VP of my product) to advise that the offer wouldn't work for me, somewhat assuming that there would be an element of horse trading but he advised that was the best offer they could make. I politely turned the offer down and we left it on good terms.

This morning, my immediate boss asked to talk to me - He wanted to make sure that I was OK with the decision I made. he knew all about what had transpired on Friday which has clearly come from the VP through back channels (There was only two of us on the call and it didn't come from me) - I told him where I was at and he, almost reluctantly, tried to sell the role to me. How, if the new role took off, the uplift could end up being more over time, how there could be further opportunity if I did well and then let slip that out of all the candidates, I was the clear favourite/winner and that the hiring team felt that the others wouldn't be able to do what I can do . He also went off on a tangent of how I could have the best of both worlds as the role won't require me to relocate (I can still work from the Dublin office and travel as needed) so I can still be involved in local stuff - Why he'd think I'd want to take on a new role and still deal with all the crap from the old one, I'm, not sure but anyway.

But the offer is the offer and maybe I wanted to take an extra day or two to think on it?

He also asked me if I would leave as I wasn't happy with the offer (it's a very real possibility but I didn't tell him that)

I'm not sure whether he's being put under pressure to try get me to change my mind or if he is worried I'd walk so he loses me with much less notice than with an internal transfer plus as I'll still be sitting in his district, he can at least pick my brains on stuff and most likely drag me into things he needs a hand with

There aren't that many occasions in your working life where you have leverage. Sounds like this is one of them.

Leverage the fuck out of it.
Tell your boss that this is a big increase in responsibility, that you have no doubt you can do it and would look forward to do doing so but that the obverse side of the coin is that you expect to be rewarded accordingly - now. This is payback time for the years you've invested.

And also make whatever preparations you need to do in order to follow through on your implied threat to leave.

Hoping to be in a similar situation myself shortly.

The first part has been done (although I feel, I may have to repeat myself again before the week is out) and the 2nd part is about to kick into gear from this evening.

However I can't help but get the feeling that they won't budge on the salary. They will hire somebody worse for less money if they can't strong arm me into it. I've seen them do it elsewhere in other roles. That's the annoying bit as what they save on paying the right person, they lose out multiples of in lost opportunity by having the right person in place.

In that case, it sounds like you're in the wrong company!

I do see this all the time, just a blanket refusal to uplift people in situ. I have a really strong person on my team, has done great work for the last three years but bosses refused to even consider him for promotion. He got pissed off, so moved internally with me to new role and they hired some guy in NY at the higher grade to replace him. NY guy was a disaster (and I heard has just quit) and now they are miles behind on a critical program as a result.

Leaving me with much opportunity to say "I hate to say 'I told you so but....' "

Since they are likely to just say no, the only way I would take that is if the title itself is valuable in finding a similar role at another place for more pay. Then I would go get said role.

                    Probably both.
Don't like offering advice in these situations but I'd guess that if they do want you they will have to explain the lack of uplift and come up with a clear plan for how and when it will be available subject to markers etc.
I'd either take whatever is offered even as a holding position making it clear what you want to get out of it and remind them every few months or else I'd polish up the CV with a view to moving on in the short term

Do you know what the equivalent in another company pays or can you find out?

Having that info is good as it gives you a fact to back up your request and also puts the oh shit he must have looked into other jobs/spoken to a recruiter thoughts out there.

Your mgr possibly likes the idea of this being based in his back yard as it will make his life easier and likely doesn’t want to deal with the impact of having second choice shithouse making a balls of things? I’m sure there is a big element of good for the company and good for you in there too tho.

The other side if this is he right? Will the move open up promotion options down the line that you won’t have without this and importantly are those options that you would want to take?

If your going to push back which I think it sounds like you should you need to know what you will accept and what you can reasonably ask for. Since it’s a pure business decision if you can manage to put some stats around why your output will be worth the extra over the second choice it always makes the conversation easier. This can be very tough as it’s fairly abstract in some ways.

Don’t mess with the system - it’s this type of approach that keeps staff turnover nice and high keeping recruiters in business.

Yeah, I'd be weary of this aright, like you'd be expected to take on the responsibility of the new role, while still half covering your old one, for no extra money.

Recruiters, much like lawyers and bankers, are the most important members of our society. The more juice we can give them, the better.

The role is pretty bespoke so impossible to get an exact replica elsewhere but I've already explained that I have done some research and advised what similar roles would be paying elsewhere. I even gave them a decent spread where I would have taken the lower amount to allow them to be seen to be getting a deal had they countered.

If I took the role, there would be at least 3, possibly four other people ahead of me in the pecking order for the next promotion. That's not to say, I couldn't close the gap by ripping it up in the new role but it's certainly not a case of do well here and you're on the way.

The plot has thickened somewhat as the HR manager for Ireland just rang me to say, they just heard I got offered the role and to say well done. Now the HR manager and my boss are in constant communication every day plus they know everything and I mean everything that goes on in here so there is no way they only found out that I got offered the job last week.

As soon as I said that I was offered it but turned it down, they immediately asked if the money wasn't enough followed by how that I would be so good in the role, blah, blah, blah - a slightly watered down version of the spiel out of my boss earlier.

I feel like it's turning into a scene from 'Allo 'Allo

That would be the dream in most jobs and I'd happily work a four day week over more money but it's sadly not really practical in this industry.

Just got to hardball them lao lao - although I fully realise its easier said from the sidelines than actually done in the trenches. Its some cheek to expect you to step up big time without a proper bump in pay. And to say, oh it might follow, is just really dodgy.

The one exception is maybe if the experience is super-valuable and you can see how after a year of doing it you could easily jump ship (ho hum) with all the new experience gained for a big uplift.

The problem is that I suspect you actually really like where you work, so you are probably not actually thinking of leaving. So it would just then be more responsibility without the ability to jump ship for the big gain.

Nice situation to be in though! Not perfect, but you'll get it there !!

ha. I'd imagine thats exactly what was said for moving to six-day and five-day week. Of course its possible. They've just designed jobs to be five-day weeks. They need to redesign them to be four-day weeks. France did it a decade ago when they moved from five-day to 4.5 day weeks. No bother at all. The big thing the pandemic has thought is is defaults can be chucked in the bin overnight and most of them only appear sticky because someone higher up doesn't want to change them.

And there'll always be accommodation / airbnbs in France (some loon panicking about hotel reservations for an event 29 months away).
Not getting gouged on direct airline prices probably the biggest issue.

My guys in France still work a 5 day week, or at least they are in the office for a full 5 days, working might be a bit of a stretch

While I agree that if society as a whole decides that a four day week is the way forward, things can chance, we still have staff working bank holidays, including Stephens Day, Paddy's Day, etc - Christmas Day is the only day we are all definitely off except when you are trying to move urgent cargo and spend a few hours of Christmas morning on the phone to China trying to sort it out, oh, that was fun.

The business may need to run on those days, doesn't mean the same staff have to be there. That's them making more profit off less people or business by poor design. Are they at least giving you a cool name?

It’s a tricky for sure but you have let them know your price and they know what they will be getting for it. Just have to wait to see if they will go for it.

It looks like you have done the right stuff on your end so whichever way it ends up you can feel fine about it.

Worth checking with your provider before you switch too. I checked and there was no deal as good as the one I was on (30% off with Energia which had expired), so I contacted them saying I would switch unless I got a deal, ended up haggling back to the one I already had which was better than any alternative.

I always heard they were at least €200+ a pop, same for wedges. I'd say even with customs charges it's well worth it. I've a 21' UT X forged (old model), PM grind lob wedge and a gap wedge to match my Mizuno iron set en route from Callaway pre-owned. Something weird with the labelling/value of the box as I only had to pay €15 odd in charges and the contents were inspected as 2 items rather 3. Was expecting somewhere in €50-70 range. Hope all is ok anyway.

I was laughing with my mates recently as I've spent a decent amount on clubs with the exception of the putter. All clubs are used or the previous model on big discount. I've two old Odyssey 2 ball putters that I got for €50 and €15 (Both 10+ years old). I absolutely love both of them and I'm actually starting to prefer the cheaper one now. Trimmed both shafts from 35" -> 33" and put on new grips. I think I'm done with club purchases for the year. I'll probably look at custom fitting for Driver and/or Irons next year. Fingers crossed we can get back out in April!

PXG UK will do them at about £119 but you'll pay customs on them so figured why not order from US if I'll be paying Customs anyway.
They're the 0211, not the 0311 which is similar to something like the SIM irons vs P790s.

You should be fine, it's actually a putter I have on the way, this recent one was bought used but the last one was new from manufacturer and instead of being charged 100e+, I was charged 11e and it arrived fine.

I might try Callaway pre owned. I'm after a set of cheap irons with the intention of maybe getting fitted next year.

Played Ballyreagh pitch and putt course. Got some 40 year old hire clubs off your man and off we went. Absolutely could not miss with the double faced ancient putter he gave me. Shot -3 for 18 holes.

I've the original epic driver which is 4 years old now and was curious about upgrading to the latest model or a different brand even. All the tests I've seen on Youtube have shown that any driver from the 5 or 6 years has little difference to the next in terms of distance or forgiveness. Despite what the marketing spiel says, you don't get an extra 20 yards and all this extra magical forgiveness. Getting fitted for the right combination of specs to suit your game or swing does make the difference though. TXG channel on Youtube does some great equipment and settings reviews.

I had one of those old two sided putters and a kids 7 iron. You couldn't have paid me to use any other iron or wedge. There's a nice course down my way by Lough Owel. Must give it a lash when it's back open. Not a chance of me getting within +15 on it though!
