No chance people would have obeyed this shutdown in that case. So, you've just killed everyone. Game over.
We took our time instead of getting on top of things early on.
We still don't have quarantine or an order for everybody to wear facemasks. Why are we not doing our utmost to prevent community spread so we can all get back to work? When our shutdown began it should have included quarantine for everybody coming in and facemasks. I'm pretty confident we'd all be back working now if they had done that and they still haven't. Hopefully all will go well and in three weeks time we'll be sitting with low numbers and some best practises from other places and can accelerate things. There has to be some situation somewhere between 15% ICU capacity and 120% that doesn't involve 1.2 million people on income support and being the only country in Europe where you can't get a haircut.
Edit: interesting tweet on David Higgins twitter where in Denmark they R0 went up to 0.9 after they opened the schools and shops weeks ago but it's down to 0.7 again.

My wife who hates sport and typically spends half the time watching stuff she likes looking at her phone is glued to it. Great job making it appeal to seemingly everyone.

Also there was one of the contact tracing heads on Prime Time earlier stating that they are not quite where they want to be in respect of testing turnaround to enable efficient tracing. We've seen from South Korea, on a couple of occasions now, the damage one person can do.
Perhaps if rigorous and effective testing and contact tracing can be shown to keep reproduction down over the coming weeks it may be possible to accelerate the easing of restrictions.

World economy going to crash (was heading for a crash anyway but now mental)
Brexit on horizon, should hit Ireland bad
Tiny country with underfunded health service and neighbours with serious covid problems, if we open up we could get hammered and seeing what is happening in Germany and China we probably should not rush into anything
Tiny country, so going to be hit by economy slowdown no-matter what we do, anything we do will probably be like a plaster on a bullet wound
Largely an Export and Service economy (counting Tourism in here) and while some exports will be fine (next point), neither going to do well in a world wide recession, most people I know wary of setting foot in pubs, restaurants, cinema etc for a good while after they reopen
Large parts of economy that will stand up to a crash can in part be done from home and/or in plants with clean rooms/ability to isolate people etc so should be able to handle restrictions
The bank bail out cost a hell of a lot more than the covid payments
If we open up and have to shut down again, it will lead to unrest and ruin any confidence in the economy/government etc
I fail to see what is gained from being anything other than a middle to late adopter of change
My 50 cents; glad to be proven wrong!Last edited by Guest; 13-05-20, 00:27.

If that was Ireland/France etc she would have been given a back office job of some sort or put somewhere safe
Her cousin Agnes and a colleague who witnessed the incident said Mujinga had pleaded against working outside the protection of the ticket office without PPE.
They alleged her employers, Govia Thameslink, knew she had respiratory problems but still insisted she work on the concourse and interact with passengers. They claimed she was also sent back to work on the concourse after the spitting incident despite physically shaking because of the trauma of what had happened.

France two weeks before and only slowly reopening now. UK will take a small bit longer than Ireland to reopen. They're the only four with bad outbreaks I'm aware of, but seem to be following the exact same pattern as Ireland give or take a few days.
Still at phase 0 in the municipalities, so while the international headline is 'Spain is reopenin g' there are massive caveats attached. Latest is that the current emergency period will be extended to the end of June.
edit: an example of the depth of restriction is that the lottery (including euromillions) has been suspended in Spain since March 15th, they are talking about maybe letting people play again from next week or the week after.
All to avoid people exchanging money/paper and queuing in small local shops.Last edited by Iago; 13-05-20, 06:55.

I think Hitch, Denny or Murdrum may have mentioned something about this before but can't find the post.
I can't see why there can't be a broker service who would collect the sub and divide it up between all the articles that the subscriber has read. Ideally would be a sub per household system and probably a reasonable limit on the number of articles per week etc.
Its what punters have been asking for but none of the media companies seem willing to play.
It would even make sense for the Irish media companies to do it but the way they operate its a close to 0% chance of happening.Turning millions into thousands

Did ye know that its fairly easy to teach babies from a few months up a limited form of sign language.
Obv No.1 Granddaughter is a special genius but its been amazing to watch her be able to clearly communicate a few different things (in fairness mostly the 'more food' sign) since she was only a few months old.Turning millions into thousands

O'Doherty and Waters told to GFT https://www.rte.ie/news/courts/2020/...9-coronavirus/
He said Mr Waters and Ms O'Doherty, who had no medical or scientific qualifications, maintained the numbers were overstated and the Minister for Health was following fraudulent science.
There was no factual basis or any supporting expert opinion put forward to support this.
The judge said the applicants gave unsubstantiated options, speeches, engaged in empty rhetoric and sought to draw an "absurd and Offensive" historical parallel with Nazi Germany.
Unsubstantiated opinions, speeches, rhetoric and bogus historical parallel were not substitutes for facts.Gone full 'Glinner' since June 2022.

I think, for her, if nobody here speaks the international one it will be more useless than one where 5k people can understand. Unless she wants to work in the area I guess which I'll ask about, even then Irish may make sense since I assume that is what they use officially here, or do you allude to them using international here?

The absolute hunger and drive is incredible and it’s hard to imagine the hollowness of life having lost that sense of singular purpose. The lesser lights on the team seem more content now and that makes a lot of sense to me, but it’s hard not to admire the dedication and focus.‘IF YOU had not committed great sins, God would not have sent a punishment like me upon you.” Genghis Khan

Grim read. They estimate 4.4% of French population has been infected. So if the French just let the virus run wild, we're talking ~600k deaths if everyone caught it.
