    Hi Guys,

I spoke to both Ash and Marcus regarding some of the comments on the bad beat thread.

Firstly they’re not planning on discussing CFD’s and will be dealing with spread betting only. Members can trade CFD’s on the IG.Com platform under a separate account and I misunderstood this when they were explaining it to me.

Regarding Capital Gain Tax. CFD’s are liable for CGT but spread betting is not. Again this was a misunderstanding on my behalf.

I guess I should have explained from the outset that I’ve no financial gain from the seminars other than the knowledge I gain.

Some of you may be aware that I started running and organizing poker events just as I was about to finish my Masters in Finance and had just begun trading oil on the Nymex exchange with one of my professors. So naturally I have an interest in this area.

Ash from Smart Shark Trading is a member in my club. He mentioned to me about a month ago that he and his business partner Marcus who was an intermediary broker for IG.com were starting a new venture, Smart Shark as they had been given the sole licence to act on IG’s behalf in Ireland.

Since our original conversation I have attended a seminar IG put on at the Institute of Bankers with a number of guess speakers including Eamonn J. Walsh (Pricewaterhousecoopers Professor of Accounting at UCD, he also held faculty positions at London School of Economics and New York University). I’ve also visited Smart Shark’s offices and have had a number of training sessions and begun to trade.

Smart Shark have agreed a partnership with the Irish Institute of Financial Traders (http://www.iift.ie/) and are working on getting reduces rates for their members to attend courses at IIFT. I will be attending their trading boot camp on 7th June and intend on doing their Diploma in Financial Trading.

For anyone interested I will let you know how I get on.

Like all things in life, knowledge is the key. The seminars which will be held in my club on Tuesday 10th and 17th June are not intended as a one stop shop and throw you into the deep end. They are just the beginning of the journey.

Smart Shark certainly are not interested in people losing their money by recklessly trading on something they have very little knowledge. They get paid in part by some of the commission that is generated by trades made on IG.Com.

It is in their interest to educate their traders to be successful and thus gain a long term revenue stream.

If it's ok with the mods.

I will post up a trading blog.

Good or bad I'll be honest with the trades that I make. The mistakes I make along the way and everything else that pops up.

            No not at all.

Like with any business model, you survive with repeat business.

There's very little to gain from someone doing their money because they've no idea what they're doing. Give someone a bad experience and you won't see them again.

Give someone the knowledge and tools to be successful and you have a customer for a long time.

Well unfortunately "experience" (good or bad) is not a very big factor when a degenerate needs their fix and even more unfortunate this is very often repeat business. While the commission from the long term successful is obviously a big part of the companies sustainability none of this works without the other side of things.

Think you're either naive or disingenuous to suggest the main objective for these guys is to groom sharks here.

Agree with all bar the last line.

Replace with "Give someone the knowledge and tools to lose money slowly and steadily and you have a customer for a long time" and you have the business model for the majority of bookies and casinos.

                  JP, a couple of questions:

What risk management tools do SmartShark make available to their clients? Is there any extra cost to these?

What level of market data and analysis do SmartShark make available to their clients? Please specify major markets covered. Same question about costs.

                  Thanks.

                      Hi Denny,

                      Good question.

Different markets have different spreads (I'm assuming it's based on it's size and liquidity). If you have a particular market that your looking for information pm and I'll find out.

Also some markets have different spreads at different times of the day.

I've mainly been trading the Dax which has a 2 point spread during the daytime and your charged 1 point. In the evening it becomes a 7 point spread and your charged the full 7 points.

                      Here's a link for full spreads https://www.ig.com/uk/indices-bet-details

                        Hi RD,

All trades are made on IG.Com and therefore you would be using their software and would have access to their risk management tools.

The main difference between IG and SmartShark is IG are execution only were as SmartShark are advisory.

As mentioned above I'm only trading the Dax. All information I get is only on the Dax.
I'm doing some very basic stuff and have traded a €2k account to just under €3k in a week.

Once I'm comfortable with the Dax, the plan is to start working on spot gold and Euro/dollar.

I have also received a strong buy recommendation on a European Bank trading at just under 1cent a share, which is expected to reach 3/4cent a share by August/September.

At this moment in time there has been no mention of fee's for this advice.

Don't take this the wrong way, but 50% gain in a week sounds a lot. How much of your tank are you risking on each trade?

To be honest guys I'm starting to regret putting this up here.

I wasn't trying to sell you a product, my business is poker as you all know. I'm a well know and respected member in the community.

I'm fully aware that this is not for everybody but I felt that there would be some of you here that would be interested in learning how to trade as I've seen trading jobs advertise here in the pass and noticed discussions about trading in the forum also.

All the trades made on the Dax have been made by me, a novice.

Yes I've made some bad trades during the week. I even been as stupid to execute a buy when I was trying to sell, go make a cup of tea and to come back and see that I was €50 in the hole.

I've just woken up, before I went to bed my account stood at €2891 I had 5 positions opened with 2 orders waiting. All had had limits on the them.

As of this moment my account stands at €3301 with 1 trade remaining which is currently minus €5 which I just opened.

If anyone doesn't believe me and want to review my trading history your more then welcome to come to me club one of the nights and I'll through it with you.

The only trade I didn't make myself was the one on the Bank, which the lads advised me on. I took a small punt on it to be honest, a much smaller punt then a lot of people here put on scoop 6 over the last 2 weeks. It has since had a credit upgrade by moody's (Credit rating agency for anyone who isn't aware) and showing a small profit.

If anyone has any serious questions you can pm me or turn up to the seminar.

Maybe I have been trading to high a point. Min point trade on the Dax is £1.

I actually went to bed at 8am as I was working last night.

That said I had over night position opened during the week.

Volatility has been incredibly low this month it, so you've probably been getting away with it, but in normal market conditions potentially account destroying moves are a regular occurrence. I actually don't know many people who trade it as an outright scalp, too tough; and that's with direct access to the market.

to be fair just because this is a poker forum and only lately raised eighty grand to effectively place multiple accumulators on the horses, so there was every indication you would get a poor reaction to any form of gambling.

spread betting is quite like poker in ways, with a good bit of work you reduce the luck element and make the skill element pay more.

I think its interesting JP, in fairness to you at no point have you been trying to say you're and expert on the matter.

I think the topic is interesting, but I am dubious of the ability of anyone to trade very liquid markets profitably over a sustained period without insider information or strong order flow, which effectively is information, with the exception of very disciplined, experienced and clever quants guys where the emotion is taken out of the area.

Also the point about the bank shares genuinely sounds dodgy, its at its most-legal a hunch, and most likely a guess. The term-results based thinking should be at the front of your mind here, yes you've made a tidy profit but did you take excess risk to get there?

That's a regular occurrence, no doubt that's possible; whether it's possible to make money consistently trading part-time over a platform this limited is something else altogether. If someone can make money with those handicaps they should become a full-time trader imo.

My view of trading per se is buying and selling over very short periods rather than 'investing' as such where you make a call on longer term trends which I am very much in favour of. Much like when poker players started playing online and seen exactly how much rake they paid over a period of time, many people who trade don't realise the amount of commission, whether implicit or explicit (spreads etc).

As it would take a few days to get everyone who attended last nights seminar demo account opens. With that in mind some of the guys wouldn't have had a chance to use the demo account before the 17th June so we will be going ahead on Tuesday 24th June with the next seminar.
