Ryder Cup next Sunday. Tricky event to score in, with a case to be made for maybe 16 players. We have a lot of different selections so someone probably binks.
In Rugby League the playoffs start on Thursday - St Helens into the semi-finals and a bye-week, but Wigan have to play a quarter-final v Leeds.

T20 Blast semi-finals and final are all next Saturday from Edgbaston, possibly going into Sunday if it rains.
The line-up is Hampshire (Strewelpeter) v Somerset (Keane, Lao Lao) followed by Kent (no-one) v Sussex (premierstone). Then the final soon afterwards.
    Scenes at the first semi-final.
Hampshire bat poorly, rally a bit late on to a still sub-par 150.
Somerset have a mare chasing, 40/5 early and 105/7 after 17 overs with just tail-enders left. At which stage I switch off as 46 off 3 overs isn't happening based on anything that's gone before.
Going to have to rewind just to see how the fuck Somerset actually won.

Cracking event, though the failure of Holland to take any of about a dozen chances to kill off Scotland in the quarter-final was so annoying for me.

Darts World Cup will finish in 3 weeks time, Sunday 12th. US Open Tennis final will be sometime over the same weekend.

Aussie Rules league phase ended yesterday. Richmond (6 picks) were a high profile failure, not finishing in the top 8 this year. Geelong (5 picks) and Port Adelaide (mdoug) play each other next Friday - winner will go through to a home semi-final though the loser will get a second chance.
Cricket T20 Blast quarter-finals take place this week Tuesday->Friday. Surrey (4 picks) failed to get out of the group, but everyone else is still alive. Notts (4 picks) against Hampshire (Strewelpeter) is the standout tie.

Two more on Saturday to finish off the summer feast, before the temporary autumn lull.
In the morning, Brazil (5 picks) have a chance to gain one point in the volleyball bronze medal match v Argentina. We've no-one in the final.
The final Lions Test is on Saturday evening. Hasn't exactly been a try-fest so far (I really don't know how to frame these rugby events!) but the fact only one player has scored so far means even one try for any of our selections will get some decent points. Anthony Watson is dropped, Josh Adams finally gets a start whilst DVDM and Rob Henshaw get another go.

Rugby – Top Lions Try Scorer Test Series
Top try scorer in the 6N didn't really work out as no-one ever looked liked getting points.
So I've simplified this event to just picking from the Lions squad for the 3 match series.
(Covid could be an issue, so at least two test matches must be completed for a valid result)
    This is the Lions squad
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_B...h_Africa#Lions

    Cricket - T20 World Cup
West Indies beat England in 2016 final. Both should be strong again along with India, New Zealand and Australia.
    2016 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_I...Knockout_stage

Soccer – EPL Top Scorer 31/12/21
Old school with Kane, Vardy, Auba, Salah, Mane? Or the new kids like DCL, Sancho, Rashford, Jesus, Torres. Or is Ronaldo coming home?

Soccer – Top of Championship 31/12/21
Always ultra competitive with the 3 relegated from the EPL and the 3 who missed out in last seasons play-offs doubtless expecting to be there or thereabouts. But also a whole host of fallen giants who think they should be in the EPL.
    Runners and riders.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021–2...p#League_table

    Snooker - UK Championship
2nd biggest event of the season, though with shorter matches than the gruelling world championship. The big 6 of Higgins, Trump, Ronnie, Selby, Ding & Robertson have all won in the last decade.
More of the same or time for a new winner?

Darts - World Championship Best English player
An event within an event, basically a last longest of just English players.
To clarify Bunting & Chinall would have been regarded as joint winners last year, we ignore non-English. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_P...ionship#Finals
Current Top 10 English players are (alphabetical)....
Nathan Aspinall, Steve Bunting, Dave Chisnall, Rob Cross, Joe Cullen, Glen Durrant, Merv King, Michael Smith, James Wade, Ian White

    Handball – Womens World Cup
An oddity to include really, but has worked well the last 2 years and has a great December slot.
No draw done yet but most of the teams are known.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_W...#Qualification
    Russia won the last renewal
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_W...onship#Bracket
with 4 European teams in the semi-finals.
Europe seems way ahead of the rest of the world so last Decembers Euros is probably relevant.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_E...onship#Bracket

    Horse – Arc De Triomphe
Tricky as the field won't be decided for until closer to the date and a lot can happen. O'Brien seems to have a bundle of fancied contenders but not sure if any/all will run. I'll let you use your knowledge, I've none.

    Horse – King George Chase
Also a minefield and tough to pick a runner let alone a winner. Again I'll bow to the horse experts and not try to lead. My secret plan is to be within 4 points in mid-Decemeber and have a change chip left.

Golf - Ryder Cup Top Individual Points Scorer
We don't quite know all the players yet with captains wildcards not decided until September, but presumably all the big names will be there in Wisconsin. But it's the Ryder Cup so couldn't be left out.
2018 renewal saw Molinari, Fleetwood and Thomas take the places, though not sure how relevant this is.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_R...player_records

Tennis – Davis Cup Finals (mens team event)
Hugely competitive with Spain, France, Serbia, Australis & USA all having at least one star name.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_D...als#Overview_2

    Tennis – US Open Women
The pretty girls have let us down so far with a blank in Paris and not a lot of points at Wimbledon either. So one final shot at redemption for them/
Probably Serena's last chance for a Major, but the usual big names will be in the way.
Osaka won last year and could go well again, although is clearly a complicated individual and there could be more reliable possibilities.

    .
    Cricket T20 Blast
    SPOILER
14 game regular season will conclude in the next few weeks.
Top 4 in each group will qualify for 1/4 finals scheduled for the end of August, with semi-finals and final all on the one day in mid -September.
In the North Group, Notts (4 picks) are guaranteed a top 4 slot, whilst Lancashire (Degag) probably have to win their final 3 group games to qualify.
In the South Group, Hampshire (Strewelpeter) look certain to miss out, whilst Somerset, Sussex and Surrey are all in the mix (probably a max of two of them can make it though).
Notts are 5/1 favs for the outright.

    Baseball
    SPOILER
Every team seems to be about 80 games into the 160 game regular season, with the best 10 (I think) qualifying for play-offs.
Dodgers (7 picks), Padres (AJ) and Chicago Whitesox (SP) all going fine and in contention for play-offs.
Yankees (4) are a bit off the pace but still plenty of time to recover.
The World Series itself will conclude in early November.
    Dodgers are 4/1 favs.

    Aussie Rules
    SPOILER
22 game regular season, currently playing (literally as I type) games in week 15.
Defending champions Richmond (6 picks) having a bad season and increasingly looks like they might miss the Top 8 playoffs. St Kilda (Lao Lao) also struggling.
Geelong (5) and Port Adelaide (mdoug) going fine.
Unpicked Brisbane & Western Bulldogs are 4/1 JFs for overall glory in Octobers grand final, with Geelong 9/2. Richmond have drifted all the way to 10/1.

    Rugby League
    SPOILER
Roughly half way through the 27 game regular season before Top 6 playoffs. St Helens (9 picks) still looking good but the form of Wigan (4 picks) has tailed off recently. Should still make the playoffs, albeit likely to face away games and no bye-weeks.
St Helens 2/1 favourites for the October final. Wigan at 4/1 still considered a strong contender.

Tampa Bay (6 picks) looking good in the Ice-Hockey final - 2 games to 0 up on Montreal (Strewelpeter). That could be over by game 4 in the early hours of Tuesday.

Check back in on Sunday for 12 brand new Autumn events to bring us up to the promised 40 - you'll have 20 days to get your selections in so should be plenty of time.

Couple of days of slaughter really - at Wimbledon Halep (2 picks) was a late non-runner, Serena (3) withdrew during her first round match and Kvitová (3) was beaten in the first round.
And in soccer defeats for France (8), Germany (2) and Netherlands (1) leave just Belgium (premierstone) and Spain (Nuck) still alive there.
    Gonna be a low-scoring year.
