The Irish Poker Awards

Bluff Europe magazine, along with sponsors BoylePoker.com, have announced that voting is now live for the Irish Poker Awards at http://www.theirishpokerawards.com/.

This year's ceremony will be held at the Regency Hotel, Dublin at 8.30pm on 21st October, during Boyle Poker’s International Poker Open. Entry is free.

Voters can decide their picks from a list of 12 categories, including “Best Tournament Player”, “Best Cash Player” and “Irish Poker Legend”. Nominees have been chosen by a committee of industry experts.

The Irish Poker Awards is now in its second year, with Owen Robinson picking up the all-important Player of the Year gong last time around. It was also a good year for poker legend Padraig Parkinson, who picked up Personality of the Year, as well as Best Blogger.

Organiser Michael Caselli said, “Following on from the massive success of the British Poker Awards, we can’t wait to put on a great show for the Irish Awards, especially at such a fun event as the IPO. It’s really a time when the Irish Poker community comes together to let its hair down and this will give us the chance to honour that community and celebrate Irish Poker in general.”

Five lucky voters will also win a subscription to Bluff Europe Magazine.

I know that not everyone in the mix will get a nomination but not having Lineus in the online nominations makes a joke of the whole thing.

+1. I'm not bothered voting as a result.

I had a look at the rankings on pocket 5s. He's ranked 1st in Ireland and 17th in the world but doesn't get the nod here, lol.

Whoever is behind this should really do some research.

As well as Bluff, (does this mean Ciaran and Nicky as they would be the only one's with an idea) it was Fintan Galvin +Mick McCloskey. Fintan prob left the room when the list of best Irish poker rooms were up for discussion

How did Owen Robinson get player of the year last year? one cash for 1370 dollars on his hendon mob he must crush online?

He seems to post here the odd time shilling or selling percentages.

Joke Lineus not up for award 17th as some said in pocket fives rankings and holding down a full time job.

It's certainly a tricky one to gauge and will more than likely vote but the nominations are certainly askew.

Best Tournament Player - pretty solid category

Best Cash Player - the only one I'm pretty certain of who plays predominantly cash games online is Seamus Cahill, as for the others I'm certainly not sure I would assume Dermot does then the rest are mostly live, play live so how do you track peoples win/loses live to make the best assessment?

Poker Personality of the Year - has to be Phil Baker hands down.

Best Poker Blogger - how David Lappin got left out of this category I'm truly baffled as he would be a shoe in.

Best Social Media user - like above surprised Lappin was left out, follow all the nominees on Twitter so it will be a toss up to who gets it.

Best Cardroom - I find the inclusion of The Sporting Emporium one of my main gripes with all nominations, yes it is a nice card room no doubt but the place hasn't done anything of significance with regards poker in the previous few years so doesn't deserve a nod in this category.

Best Online Player - I don't particularly follow the online world but the general consensus is not including Nelius Foley in this category was a huge mistake.

Break Out Year - tricky category as all the lads had pretty solid years some had the big binks while others had the more steady cashes.

Best Poker Forum - 2nd major gripe is the inclusion of boards.ie that poker forum is basically dead since we all made the switch here, not sure if it was included for the sake of it but anybody on the nomination panel should of know that all you have to do is go and browse it for two minutes and you could gauge that.

Best Tournament Director - tough one between JP/Nick/Toby with the latter winning his category in the British poker awards recently, as for the other guy I'm not really sure of him I know he done one of the side events at the WPT but other than that I'm at a loss.

Irish Poker Player of the Year - another tricky category.

Irish Poker Legend/Hall of Fame - you could include them all.

Agree that non inclusion of Nelius in Online is bizarre to say the least. On current form he should win the award, never mind be nominated.

However, I wouldn't necessarily be using P5's as argument for someone's credentials online. Apart from the fact that it only tracks non-satellite online mtts over a certain size (not cash, not sit n gos) on certain sites (nothing like them all), it basically rewards volume at higher stakes. There are several players ranked highly on it that are actually down quite significantly online in the last year.

Something like Sharkscope, OPR or PTR gives a much better picture of how people are really doing online.

There shouldnt really be a poker forum award at all though. Maybe a best Irish poker site website. Not really sure what would be eligible but probly better than a generic forum award

McCloskey said you were on the panel or was he fibbing?

Hi Danny. Original nominations were done for Bluff magazine some time ago, in March, by myself, Ciaran Corbett, Noel Hayes, Dara O'Kearney and Fintan Gavin. Then myself, Fintan and Stephen McLean were asked to have another look at nominations a couple of weeks ago and did a few updates to list.
