China are slowly loosening restrictions in Wuhan at present, I suspect they'll increase domestic travel if nothing else in the coming weeks.

European travel likely to be back on the cards come the summer time and airlines have already made cuts to staff and staff salaries pretty early on.

Those who have the liquidity will survive, you may lose a few airlines but Airbus and Boeing have lost 50% and 66% of their value.

Lessors would appear to be the play if that's the view, their sell-off has been greater than the airlines yet they're one step removed. The liquidity position of the main listed lessors would appear to be sufficient to manage short term issues - lease holidays with lessees (assuming both some degree of catch up towards year end, and some longer term defaults/repossessions).

If the fallout from Cv-19 is worse, they may face a severe liquidity crunch but in that scenario virtually every airline will need nationalisation to continue in any event.

Man dies after self-medicating with chloroquine phosphate to treat coronavirus
A man died in Phoenix after self-medicating with chloroquine phosphate to treat covid-19, Banner Health announced in a statement Monday.

The man’s wife, who also self-medicated with chloroquine phosphate, is in critical care, according to Banner Health. The man was in his 60s, as is his wife. Banner Health did not identify either of them by name.

This came just two days after President Trump suggested, in a tweet, that a mix of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin could be an effective treatment for covid-19. Neither drug had been approved by the Food and Drug Administration or World Health Organization as a treatment for the coronavirus, and has not been in the time since.

“Given the uncertainty around COVID-19, we understand that people are trying to find new ways to prevent or treat this virus, but self-medicating is not the way to do so,” Daniel Brooks, medical director of Banner Health’s Poison and Drug Information Center, said in the statement.

“The last thing that we want right now is to inundate our emergency departments with patients who believe they found a vague and risky solution that could potentially jeopardize their health.”

Banner Health urged that chloroquine, a drug used to treat malaria, “should not be ingested to treat or prevent” the virus.

On Saturday, after Trump endorsed hydroxychloroquine on Twitter, Nigeria reported two cases of chloroquine poisoning. That led Nigerian health officials to issue a warning against using the drug to treat the coronavirus, which was echoed by Banner Health after a related death.

Is anyone else having difficulties with older people? I was on the phone to my mother today and she was complaining about a queue in the bank. What are you doing in a bank? She was there to lodge a check for a small amount of money. Then I had arranged to drop some supplies to my grandmother, who at 89 is self-isolating. I arranged for her to leave the gate to her garden open so I could leave the stuff at the door, I text 2 mins before I arrive to confirm and she goes, "walk right in, it's open!" When I get there the door is locked and she is standing behind it with a scone she baked for me.

We have a similar thing between about 14 lads but for darts, one phone/tablet pointing at your home board and another phone for organizing the games and bants, we're using hangouts, never used that app before and never thought I would but it does the job.

Whatever about your mother, I wouldn't expect any more from an 89 year old. In fact I'm self isolating and my neighbours are doing my shopping for me. I'm literally planning on baking them a marble cake, and I'm generally quite cautious. I'm not even sure what the problem is you are seeing in your grans behaviour.

In my Grandmothers case, I don't mind getting the scone (even though I wouldn't eat it at the best of times), but isolation means keeping quite a much larger distance. She could have left it out for me.

Ah, I'm trying to avoid getting it. Immuno compromised, so catch the common cold very often, and strongly advised to and do get the seasonal flu vaccine.

At a press conference on Friday, President Donald Trump called chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine a “game changer.” “I feel good about it,” Trump said. His remarks have led to a rush in demand for the decades-old antimalarials. (“It reminds me a little bit of the toilet paper phenomenon and everybody’s running to the store,” Caplan says.)

The WHO scientific panel designing SOLIDARITY had originally decided to leave the duo out of the trial, but had a change of heart at a meeting in Geneva on 13 March, because the drugs “received significant attention” in many countries, according to the report of a WHO working group that looked into the drugs’ potential. The widespread interested prompted “the need to examine emerging evidence to inform a decision on its potential role.”

The available data are thin. The drugs work by decreasing the acidity in endosomes, compartments inside cells that they use to ingest outside material and that some viruses can coopt to enter a cell. But the main entryway for SARS-CoV-2 is a different one, using its so-called spike protein to attach to a receptor on the surface of human cells. Studies in cell culture have suggested chloroquines have some activity against SARS-CoV-2, but the doses needed are usually high—and could cause serious toxicities.

Encouraging cell study results with chloroquines against two other viral diseases, dengue and chikungunya, didn’t pan out in people in randomized clinical trials. And nonhuman primates infected with chikungunya did worse when given chloroquine. “Researchers have tried this drug on virus after virus, and it never works out in humans. The dose needed is just too high,” says Susanne Herold, an expert on pulmonary infections at the University of Giessen.

Results from COVID-19 patients are murky. Chinese researchers who report treating more than 100 patients with chloroquine touted its benefits in a letter in BioScience, but the data underlying the claim have not been published. All in all, more than 20 COVID-19 studies in China used chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine, WHO notes, but their results have been hard to come by. “WHO is engaging with Chinese colleagues at the mission in Geneva and have received assurances of improved collaboration; however, no data has been shared regarding the chloroquine studies.”

Researchers in France have published a study in which they treated 20 COVID-19 patients with hydroxychloroquine. They concluded that the drug significantly reduced viral load in nasal swabs. But it was not a randomized controlled trial and it didn’t report clinical outcomes such as deaths. In guidance published on Friday, the U.S. Society of Critical Care Medicine said “there is insufficient evidence to issue a recommendation on the use of chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine in critically ill adults with COVID-19.”

Hydroxychloroquine, in particular, might do more harm than good. The drug has a variety of side effects and can in rare cases harm the heart. Because people with heart conditions are at higher risk of severe COVID-19, that is a concern, says David Smith, an infectious disease physician at the University of California, San Diego. “This is a warning signal, but we still need to do the trial,” he says. What’s more, a rush to use the drug for COVID-19 might make it harder for the people who need it to treat their rheumatoid arthritis or malaria.

It's just when people are afraid and desperate they will clutch at straws, that's not a new thing. What's still a new thing is the President of the US being so wreckless.

Interesting to see the rate of positive cases in SK at around 2.7%. I think that offers a pretty decent barometer of where our testing measures need to be in the coming weeks. If the positivity rate in Ireland exceeds 2.7%, it may offer an indicator that we simply arent testing enough asymptomatic cases or mild cases.

Just on early indications, the Republic looks to be doing well. It has 2.6x the population of NI but it has 7.6x the confirmed cases. I believe that offers an early indication of our testing capacity even when compared to our NI neighbour's.

I'm not against the idea of stricter measures if *required* but little indication yet that we need them. We will have 50 testing centres operating in the coming days. Everything we are doing is correct in managing this long term. Deploying the army, gardai and other resources to enforce a lockdown has an opportunity cost, it's not free.
It takes away resources that could be used to aid with testing, contact tracing and disseminating information, all the things that are showing to work.

I don't believe a lockdown is required but I also believe alignment on the island makes sense. It really is a shame that our 21st century approach is being undermined by a UK government that is floundering under the pressure of this situation while we are looking more and more like a global leader.
