      From the BBV

The Fitzwilliam Card Club - one of Ireland's best-known all-night poker venues - announced last night it has closed with immediate effect, blaming the move on the Government's new gambling act.

The business blamed the new Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Act, 2019 for its decision, saying parts of the law, passed last week, effectively bar it from operating

For anyone looking for tournaments, I'd keep an eye on JP McCann's page on Facebook or the Village green card club page. I'm sure he will look to accommodate players and is without doubt the best run and friendliest place I've played in Dublin, even though it's a little bit out

Irish Times Story on Fitz Closing

New gambling laws force Fitzwilliam Card Club to close with the loss of almost 80 jobs, its owners claim.

Fitzwilliam Card Club, a private members’ casino close to Merrion Square in central Dublin, closed it doors on Monday with the loss of 78 jobs, 52 of them full-time.

The business blamed the Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Act, 2019 for its decision, saying parts of the law, passed by TDs and senators last week, effectively bar it from operating. President Michael D Higgins is expected to sign the Gaming and Lotteries Act into law this week and a commencement order should bring it into force shortly afterwards. The law makes it a criminal offence to operate without a permit or a licence.

Lawyers advised the casino club’s operators that under the act, it required a gaming permit to continue trading.

The law only allows the State to issue permits where the chances of all the players, including the banker, are equal. This means that anyone seeking a permit has to provide gaming for free. The odds offered on games such as roulette and blackjack include a margin - called the “house edge” - which favours casinos providing them.

The edge, normally around 2 to 3 per cent, provides the business with its turnover, but it means that the odds are skewed against the players. Thus not everyone has an equal chance of winning.

A spokesman said that the Fitzwilliam highlighted to Government and opposition TDs that the law threatened its business.

“Sadly, our pleas fell on deaf ears and an amendment was not granted to safeguard the business and our 80 employees,” he added.

The club said it will fulfil all obligations to workers, including leave and statutory redundancy payments. It has also pledged to members that it will honour any deposits or chips that they hold.

Right or wrong at the end of the day, 80 people and their families are heading towards Christmas without jobs; through no fault of their own ....

Does this mean Dermot Desmond's Sporting Emporium has to close as well?

                Something stinks.

Fitz could stay open and still put on poker tournaments if it wanted to, but they only make their money from the casino games.

I suppose Sporting may have to go the same route....

At the end of the day if it's illegal to supply the service ; it's also illegal to avail of said service?

Maybe someone who knows about the law, can tell us if it will be an offence to simply play in a poker tournament after it's signed into law?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was as simple as lobbying on behalf of a super casino that intends to develop here, wanting to tidy up all loose ends before they set up.

I think poker tournaments will be okay - just casino games have to have a full license? Probably comes from Varadakar, he prefers pok'em to pok'er ---

Echo that and would add, I went in last night to cash some chips and most of the staff were there wishing each other goodbye etc; it was very sad to see and I wish them all the VERY BEST for the future....

They did nothing to deserve this...

Did the Independent article yesterday state that the Fitz was running at a fairly substantial loss.

It’d be great if the “Fitz EOM” could survive this as a once off monthly game ran by the Fitz in a private City Centre venue complete with the Omaha game etc.

I wonder have they asked employees not to speak about the closing?

I would have thought at least one or two would have come on to vent their anger.

Why does JP not have to close for example, I've never been to the club but do they not have casino games as well? And will this affect Larry Santos' club, they have casino tables don't they?

It's beginning to feel like the reasons the Fitz are giving for closing really isn't the reason at all.

New to the forum but have been playing in the Fitz for years. I have some cash chips from the last time I was there in October. I phoned when I saw the news of the closure, they confirmed it was true, took my details and said they'd call me back to let me know how to cash them in. I've tried calling multiple times since and they haven't got back to me.

                                                          Any tips/advice would be helpful..
