Quarter Final Match 3 - Experimental Rock

Player 1

Spent the last couple of days listening to all sorts of stuff trying to narrow down a genre choice. Could've picked any number of Radiohead songs, but I dunno, felt a little safe, a little obvious.

Then it dawned on me that my well settled on a la carte pick while punk, also falls easily into the realm of Experimental Rock.

This is a superb reworking of a classic imo, listen to that bassline..

'I heard it through the bassline..'

A la carte..

Another awesome bassline coming up, this is standout brilliance from a band that didn't really spit out much else worth shouting about. A moment of high octane perfection for them.

If you're sitting still while this plays you're actually dead. RIP

The Human Beinz 'Nobody but me'

Player 2

For my genre pick I wanted to stay away from older bands with songs we have listened to millions of times. Great respect for the likes of The Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa etc but I wanted somebody that more recently is experimental, not a classic from the 70's. Honestly experimental music often sucks like high fashion runway events so it's those that push the boundaries a bit but can still draw people in that I love. For this I've chosen a great song by The Mars Volta, a truly innovative group of people:

The full version is here if you enjoy it with unabridged John Frusciante.

Honorable mention to Battles who immediately came to mind when I read the genre for an even more recent experimental rock band, here are a choice couple of songs:

For my personal choice it's one of the first groups I've ever seen, Rodrigo y Gabriela. A mexican duo with metal roots that made their way here to Ireland to find their fortune. I first saw them in April of 2005 in The Black Box in Galway and they blew the roof off. It was a seated gig and I was sitting in the front row a scant few feet from them, never having heard of them and being amazed by their craftsmanship. I was a teen then and they opened my eyes to what people could do with intruments, and to think outside the box.

I'll never forget Rodrigo noticing my metal tshirt, pausing his playing to nod and give me the devil horns. He then starting blasting into frantic acoustic Metallica and Slayer solos that sounded wonderful in their unique styling.

Hmm, I feel Player Two is being a bit cheeky providing a genre pick AND a few other genre tracks that almost made his pick Bit of a 'if you didn't like this, why not listen to that instead (and consider giving me your vote)' about it!

All that being said while I did like both of Player One's choices, I'm gonna go with Player Two as I preferred both his genre and Š la carte selections.

Vote: Player Two

Player 1 for me. Player 2 might have taken it by picking one of the battles tunes instead of rodrigo y gabriela who is think are dull as dishwater

Player 1. Love the slits. Hadn't heard the Nobody but Me track before and enjoyed it a lot.

Mars Volta was only OK. I like John Frusciante's style but it was a bit rambling this one and Rodrigo Y Gabriel, while undoubtedly talented, would only float my boat if i was in a certain mood. Maybe on holiday in Portugal or something.

Plus P2s multiple entries didn't garner him any favour TBH.

player one

Almost like player 2 is kinda cheating with so many tracks. Should be kept to 2 songs only imo, genre and a la carte

Player 2 may have over egged the basket somewhat

Best round by far
Put them both through and disqualify the eejits who think drunken ballad singers == Traditional music

The slits are ok but thats a great track
Human Beinz the highlight for me
Liked the Mars Volta thought the track maybe lost its way a bit
The R&G track is great but they are a live show

Player 1 just for Nobody but me
