HectorJelly Blog Updates: From busto to robusto!

I did my last shift for Full Tilt last week, so for the time being I'm back playing poker. I managed to play 50 thousand hands last month, turning a small deposit into a small but workable bankroll.

The main reason I left was the hours, I was doing the nightshift and found it incredibly stressful, unhealthy and antisocial. As the year progressed I found it harder and harder to sleep. I had planned to either change shift or role, but once Black Friday (for those not involved in poker, here’s a quick summary: http://www.cnbc.com/id/42649117/Insi...s_Black_Friday)
happened that seemed like a very distant possibility. There was very little work to do after that, and I found it increasingly difficult to justify spending my time in such an unhealthy fashion. Having to leave a party at 9pm on a Saturday night to go to an office where there is nothing to do is not how I want my life to be

I’ll miss the people in Full Tilt, and I hope that they manage to sort out their problems. The people I worked with were very friendly and generally competent. I think its very unfortunate that the bad decisions made by those at the top have affected everyone.

My first goal is to get into a regular routine. Ideally I want to be up each day at around 12pm. The plan is to work six days out of seven for five hours, leaving most evenings for socialising/football etc.

Changing my sleeping pattern has been a lot harder that I imagined. I always found it hard getting to sleep, but I found it impossible to get to sleep at 9am, having cycled home from work. The last thing I felt like doing straight after work was going to sleep, especially after cycling 16km.

So the last week or two I’ve been trying to go to bed and get up as early as possible, but it’s not easy. Today was my best day, I was up around 2. Anytime I drink I find it much easier to sleep, but that’s not really a long term solution!

Poker has been going reasonably well. I’ve found playing again really interesting, and have enjoyed thinking deeply about the game again. (Must give a shout out to Girah for his latest video - its incredible http://www.pokerstrategy.com/video/19725/). However almost a year of getting a monthly salary has made me weary of the swings. One of the hardest things about poker is learning to deal with the variance. Some sessions you will play well for a number of hours but lose. (Other times you will play bad and win, but that isn’t such a big problem). I was good at dealing with this before, so hopefully I can relearn that skill.

I want to start doing the weekly radio show again. I really enjoyed doing it, and the process forced me to listen to new music every week, which is really enjoyable. It fitted well with playing poker, as I could listen whilst I played and make notes on what songs I thought were good. This helped alleviate the boredom of playing for 5 hours in a row! What is stopping me committing to it right now though is the fact that my hourly rate is so low, I’m wary of making any major time commitments. I already spend a great deal of time playing football (of which at least a quarter is spent washing my gear, it’s never ending!), and I really need to be putting in 30 hour weeks, at least.

I’m playing at Rathlin (tiny music festival in NI) this weekend, I can’t wait. Haven’t played a gig in a long time. I haven’t been listening to much electronic music recently, so am planning to bang out some old hard techno.
