    Live Tournament Bankroll

    Hi,

I was just wondering what you think an appropriate bankroll is for live tournaments.

Some sites recommend between 5-10% of total bankroll with room for shots for live tournaments others 100 buy ins.

A lot of it depends on your personal situation. How important is your BR to you? Can you replenish it? Do you have other types of income? Do you solely play tournaments? Are you playing for a living? If you are solely playing MTTS and don't want to bust your BR then you should be very conservative, much more than playing tournaments with 10% of your BR.

      Thanks Hectorjelly,

First off, ill say i really enjoy poker, i take it seriously, but as a hobby, I don't think i'll ever see it as a profession or as my only single source of income. I would like to play in some of the bigger events someday, and I am making a decent wage currently working in IT, which allows me to live relatively carefree and comfortably.

I don't feel i'm as big a gambler as I see in some of the card clubs or casinos I've played in, and would prefer to take calculated risks. Although depending on the table i'd probably fare alright at a decent cash table, i prefer the idea of a tournament, to say heres x amount you'll lost or have the opportunity to increase.

On an aggregated level id like to say here's an arbitrary amount that i've allocated to invest into poker. It would be easier to track that way vs having a win and it either going straight into the bank or mixed in with the cash already in my wallet.

I don't think I ever see myself losing all my br (touch wood), and i cash a decent amount of the time in the tournaments I play in. I think the structure of the lower buy-in tournaments is conducive to playing ABC poker early and a good icm based strategy should see you profitably through the middle later levels itlr, Thats not to say im immune from variance either, that would be foolish.

I've kind of toyed with the idea of playing all the lower buy-in tournaments in card clubs across dublin, hopefully winning a couple and being able to eventually take a shot at the likes of the end of the month tournaments, or side events in poker festivals after a while.

I tried the approach you're thinking off - i.e. setting aside a specific bank roll for poker, even though I too play for fun (while taking the game seriously)

TBH, I found life got in the way all too often, and it was an unnecessary burden as a recreational player to be managing poker money separately. I now treat poker like any other non-essential purchase - I see a tourney I wan to play, decide if I have the disposable income to play it - and if so, play.

All that said, I do track what I lose / win as I go along.

I think proper BRM as a rec is more feasible if you're playing cash games, but for tourney's with a 'small' live buy-in like 100-200 euro, coupled with variance, would require a pretty decent bankroll (30-75 buy-ins assuming you can actually beat the games) - so why stress - just play when you want with what you can afford, I say...
