cheers captain, i've been using songkick for a while, and it pretty much exploded when i put london as a location. This may take some time, so going to start with the tl;dr:

Israel is not perfect, no country is. It does however have a right to existence and a right to defence when attacked. I support those rights.

Here we are in violent agreement. Of course Israel has a right to exist, and a right to defend itself. You support those rights - proper order. I do too (despite my obvious and unrepentant jihadist leanings), and would be astounded if there was anyone on here who didn't.

The thing of it is though (and I feel like a broken record at this stage) ... describing the unabated bombardment of a civilian population as a defensive measure would require a fairly radical alteration to what the word defense means. It's offensive in every sense of the word. Iron dome is an example of Israel defending itself (and it's an extremely effective tool). Firing missiles at apartment blocks, hospitals, UN buildings and beaches is not.

Which of course causes everyone a problem - Israel, the US, the EU but most of all, the Gazans themselves. The Germans voted Hitler into power and the Gazans have done likewise with Hamas. What we are seeing now is partially the consequences of that decision. Hamas know exactly what will happen when they launch barrages of rockets at Israeli population centres - it's not like we haven't been here before. Yet they continue to provoke an Israeli response - knowing exactly what that response will be and the cost to Gaza.

We're talking as though Israel's only two options were to do nothing, or to bomb Gaza and all who sail in her into dust. Israel did not have to carry out such a sustained and indiscriminate attack on Gaza, but chose to do so, knowing for a certainty that civilian casualties would huge. Hamas undoubtedly provoked Israel, but the fact that Hamas knew what the response would be doesn't make that response any more legitimate, proportional, or defensible imo.

There are civilian casualties - this is undeniable. Just as there are civilian casualties in all wars. Churchill is remembered as one of the greatest leaders of all time, the champion of western civilisation. Yet, in 1944-45, he continued to send fleets of heavy bombers against German population centres for no militarily-justifiable reason other than to kill and terrorise unarmed civilians. Israel's response is much milder than Churchill's (thirty thousand died in one night of bombing in Hamburg) and they do make efforts to avoid casualties.

For a man so vehemently opposed to it, this sails perilously close to the shores of whataboutery

Churchill being remembered as a great leader is just a function of history being written by the victors. Robert McNamara ordered the firebombing of Japanese cities in WW2, and he talks in the fog of war about how he would have been tried as a war criminal had the Allies lost. The fact that they won doesn't make his actions any more moral. The fact that Israel have killed fewer civilians than Churchill in his pomp doesn't make Israel's actions any more correct.

Hamas have been shelling a civilian population for weeks on end. The difference between the civilian populations in Israel and Gaza are that the Israelis actually care whether their population live or die (every Israeli house must have a bomb shelter - how many dead would we be looking at in Gaza if they did the same instead of putting their energies into building tunnels to attack Israel? 10% of the current number? 5%?).

The difference isn't just that the Israeli government cares about it's people - the primary difference is the disparity in how both sides are armed, and the efficacy of the Israeli defense systems. How many dead there would be if Gazans had built bomb shelters - I doubt the number would be much lower. For one thing Israel is real reluctant to allow concrete through the blockade, for fear of Hamas using it to build bunkers,tunnels etc ... seems unlikely they would have allowed the mass construction of bomb shelters. Given the scale of the destruction caused by Israeli attacks in Gaza, I doubt they would have been particularly effective even if they had been constructed.

The other bugbear I have is the one-sided nature of the media coverage and a particular subsection of our population that will blindly criticise Israel, no matter what.
Who has killed the most Palestinians in the last couple of years? Not Israel, that's for damn sure - the correct answer is actually Syria (number two on the list is actually Palestine itself). Strangely enough, we don't see any protests about that (or the 150,000 - 150 times the number in Gaza - civilians murdered in Syria). We don't see any protests outside the Russian embassy either - yet the Russians murdered 300 people, many kids included, just last week. The Americans have killed thousands of civilians in Afghanistan and northern Pakistan. No protests. Why is this? I don't have the answer.

Ah heyor - the media in the US tends to be wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiildly pro Israel no? I don't doubt that there are people who will blindly criticise Israel no matter what, but there are plenty who will defend Israel's actions no matter what too. There's plenty of bias to go round.

I'd say most people would say 3,1,2,5,4. I'd say A Storm of Swords is one of the greatest books ever written. It is a brutal rollercoaster with incredible highs, lows that would have made Shakespeare wince, and a huge set of intertwined mysteries waiting to be discovered. I'm also a huge fan of A Dance With Dragons, but only now that I've discussed it at length with other fans and am reasonably sure I know what actually happened in the book.

I'll be honest, the books aren't for everyone. At their essence they are a deconstruction of modern fantasy. So if you're really into fantasy and don't want it torn apart, or you're really not into fantasy and can't stand the thought of magic in stories, then you'll struggle to appreciate them.

Additionally, they are not for the faint of heart. They are long, complex and dense. Sometimes it takes several books for the payoff to arrive. Sometimes if you don't keep your eyes open you miss it completely. Sometimes there's a hundred red herrings and no good way to discern truth from rumour and fact from opinion.

I find that utterly absorbing, but I can see why others would not get the value out of it that I do. Essentially you get as much out as you put in, which puts most people off. They just want to pick up a book and have a cool story wash over them. They're not used to having to really think about it in order to enjoy it. I wouldn't look down on anyone who didn't enjoy them, I just understand that not everyone appreciates them the way I do.

My recommendation would be to start it again, but this time read along with the guys at the Westeros.org Still Reading forum:

Based in the early 80s and set in a small company trying to put together a PC to compete against the likes of IBM etc. really enjoying it so far.

Mini brag, at the turn of the year I was 23.5 stone size 46 waist size 52 chest. I had a communion coming up on May 19th so I bought a suit 48 chest 40 waist to motivate me to lose the weight.
March 1st not a thing done same size probably worse I didn't check. So I cut the bread, spuds, rice,and pasta. Still ate loads of fruit and veg etc. Anyway I got into the suit for the communion badly fit tbh I certainly wasn't a 40 waist or 48 chest but struggled into them anyway.
1st of June joined the gym and got an induction etc. Weighed in at 19 stone 2 and I was a comfortable 42 waist at that stage. Went for the 8 week review this week and I'm down to 18'6 but more importantly a 38" waist and 46" chest.

Not doing a log or anything but putting up this post to motivate me to drive it on further and get to my new targets.
