Music King Grand Final!

Finally, the round we have all been waiting for. Brought to you live, from a collectivo 10km outside playa de carman. Gl to both contestants, El Shambles and Benny Hi Fi!

Player 1

Sometimes Spotify's discover weekly recommends some good shit! Just started listening to his stuff recently, well worth a delve

I used to listen to Hip Hop, then it became Rap and it was good, then it became Rap bragging about cheap Brandy and over priced Champagne, I got bored, so I stopped for a bit.

Some time later, I came across Roots Manuva and an indie mate handed me the first two albums by Aesop Rock

Nice intro to a very complex lyricist, play loud!

Had a walk through the business area of a big city recently, a city where it's said, if you're poor you fucked. This would lead you to believe that the city is laid out for those with good jobs, they didn't look like the world was at their feet, still, worst case scenario...

Player 2

Os Mutantes - Bat Macumba
We're off to late 60s Brazil for our south American selection. Os Mutantes were pioneers of the tropicalia movement combining afro-funk and psychedelic rock to devastating voodoo dance floor effect.

Up To My Neck In You - Mark Kozelek
Kozalek is the divisive lead singer of indie rock icons Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon. I am always bewitched by his early period AC/DC cover versions lifting Bon Scott's lyrics and the Young brothers bluesy repetition to plaintive new heights.

A Certain Ratio: Shack Up

A Certain Ratio can rightly be described as the most infuential band no one has ever heard of - David Byrne, LCD Sound System, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Andrew Weatherall to name a few were enthral to the taut punk-funk they basically invented. Saw them live a couple of weeks ago on one of their very rare appearances and they blew the roof off the Sugar Club with this track. What a video too - they didn't give a fuck, just like their benefactor and champion Tony Wlson.

What a final. What. A. Final.

Incredible stuff lads.

I've listened to each track about six times now, not because I couldn't pick a winner, I forgot there even was a competition. I just listened to them all over and over. Cause I wanted to.

That Zombies track whacked me sideways when the vocal came in, that heavily accented African vocal, over that groove, booom. What a tune. 12 and a half minutes of yeahh.

Aesop Rock was mind blowing, p1's intro made it even more so. Lyrics only a true artist can dream up and deliver. Have said before that I'm no fan of rap hip/hop, for the reasons P1 got bored, gotta rethink that.

Again, player 1's intro to his third track was pure art in itself, poetry that warmed and primed for what was to come. A track that I loved because of it. That's what this game is about for me, finding out why others love a track gives you a wider lens to view it yourself. May have flicked by this tune otherwise.

Player 2's opener sent me in a spin. Whoahhhh. What a tune!! Groooooove. How have I not been exposed to this magic before?? So sixties yet unknown?? Why??

Up To My Neck in You takes you on a different journey, a warm, vocally rich segue from the intense grooves. A beautiful ballad that warms.

A Certain Ratio is another track that without the expert intro I would have possibly overlooked, but instead, appreciated and lapped up. You can hear Talking Heads, RHCP and LCD soundsystem clearly, a depth to the tune that would have been missing for me had it not been for P2's guidance.

Fantastic match up. Great for us to see Benny meet his match.

Six winning tunes for me, but I'm going to edge it to player 1, the vocal on Zombie and the lyrical brilliance of Aesop Rock nailed it for him.

Excellent stuff. Well done lads.

Really enjoyed that! Some great, great picks and definitely found a lot new and pleasing to the ear in both selections.

That being said, gonna go with...

Vote: Player One

The stand-out pick for me was the Fela Kuti one, just amazing. Also loved the Porno for Pyros track which, although it isn't new to me, I hadn't heard in years and thus couldn't hold familiarity against it. Awesome.

Really, really liked the Mark Kozelek song too, will listen to more of his, but just wasn't enough to swing my vote to player two unfortunately.

Good job both!

Good picking by a few of ye in this whole competition. Also enjoyed the lyrical waxing/wanking of the critics, some of it a bit amusing (whether intentional or not) . Now for the final - So having listened to all the tracks I can’t decide who has picked the better tunes as they are definitely mood dependant. It’s that close. Which is great. Enjoyed your picks lads I will listen later again and see which player swayed it. ATM I doubt I can justify saying one was better than the other on 1st listen. (well 4 of them were new to me) .

I enjoyed all six songs a lot, I'm finding it hard to pick a winner. Will listen again tomorrow and vote then.

In HJs absence and the interest of giving a man his dues i nearby surrender gracefully and crown El Shambles the new Music King of IPB.

Despite a couple of votes giving me some false hope he tore away again convincingly and deserved his 7-2 margin (shame about the low voting numbers though).

Had an idea i was up against it when i saw the Fela Kuti 12 minute monster. Good tracks all round.

Well played champ. Take a bow.

Oh...and thanks to all who voted and played and HectorJelly of course for his light touch management skills

Good game lads, well played all.

Yeah, pity about the low numbers voting as the rounds go on, criminally so in this, the absolute best match of it all.

Always happens in MK unfort.

In fairness this game started back the first week of August, so that's almost 3 months to play one game. People lose interest. I voted in every round while we were getting a few matches a week and when HJ lost interest and stopped posting, I and I imagine a few other casuals lost interest too. Pace needs to be quicker to keep.people interested imo cos I did find some bangers from this game.

Bit easier for me seeing as I think this is only the second time Ive played and you play everyone, you're having to go a bit further into the wardrobe than me to dig out a new song

Anyhu, I toyed with picking this every round so:
