Not really, but it goes through peaks and troughs. I just have to accept that i'm not young anymore and structure my training to what my body can handle. I'm a bit beaten up, so much so that i cant rotate my left wrist, both knees are really sore and i'm covered in bruises (i don't bruise normally). I'm at a low point at the moment, so just grinding my way through it. I have five more sessions to break this plateau before Lisbon.

I spoke to mick from the ISI, and he has advised em to carb up between 72 and 48 hours beforehand so i expect that will help my energy levels. I'm confident that will help, and I also have a really positive mindset.

Once it all over, i need to plan my next few training cycles a lot better. I'm also going to work on dropping a few weight categories this year. I think that will make it easier of the body in the long run

Should you not be on a big taper between now and the first fight? Or does fighting prep not work like that?

Nah, my weight is good. Just have to make sure I'm carbed up with clean carbs and no toxins. Competitions jitters can be hard on the stomach. I'm feeling anxious about it at the moment, but that'll all change in the next few days. One of the keys for me is coming to my first match fired up and aggressive.

There's about 70/80 people going over from Ireland. I think there's 13 is my weight category. Middleweight has over 80 people which is huge.

Yeah, lightweight and middleweight tend to be the biggest two. And they also the two that I switch between.

Also on the edge of my seat here Tom. I resisted checking the results so far, but curiosity will get the better of me sooner or later.

                                                        IBJJF Europeans 2014

I had two matches in my division winning the first and then losing on points in the semi final. They ran about two hours behind schedule which meant i burnt a lot of energy through nervousness, from the atmosphere and trying to keep loose and warm. I was losing my quarter final with ten seconds to go, but managed to get a sweep and a pass to pull out the win. In the semifinal i got thrown and mounted and ended up six points down after about thirty seconds. I recovered back to turtle and then half guard to work from there. My opponent was clever and stalled. He received one warning and two penalties stalling before time ran out with him winning 6pts to 2pts.

My bronze medal meant i qualified for the absolute division against the medalists of all the other divisions. Another two hour wait later and i was running on empty. A very tricky opponent who came up from guard to a single leg before planting me though the mat, then going to knee on belly before choking me out. He went on to win the absolute division.

All in all it was a great experience and i learnt a whole lot about my game, and how i approach competition. Needless to say i have a shit tonne to work on before i go for gold next year. I want to drop down at least one, but hopefully two weightclasses over this year. I was 106kg on the day, and far smaller than anyone else in the division. My quarter final opponent was 120kg+ and my semi final opponent was even bigger.

Bronze at the euros is a great achievement Tom. Especially when you are significantly undersized for your division.

I had two matches in my weightlcass. Lost the first when i pull guard and went to deep half. Almost got the sweep, but opponent maintained top from the scramble. He isolated my top arm and locked in kimura grip. I hung on and tried to escape for about three mins, but he was patient and got the finish with a minute to go.

In my next match, i again pulled guard. I pulled opponents arm across for armbar or backtake. he pinned my wrist with both hand, which exposed his back. As i moved out to the side, he pulled up on the elbow of my trapped arm, popping my elbow. One of the most embarassing things in Jiu Jitsu is to be tapped from within your own guard.

I iced my elbow, and registered for the open class. I fought a young guy who was only 17 and i outweight by 40 or so kgs. He pulled guard and after attmepting to pass for a bit, i sat back for an ankle lock. It wasnt tight enough and he came on top for two points. I got to x guard, and single leg x a few times but could'nt sweep. We ended up in 50/50 for a few minutes but it didnt go anywhere and time ran out.

Three matches, three defeats. Not happy. Work to do...

I was considering the NI open and really want to, but i'll up there for Braulio the week after and competing at the Dublin City open the week after that, so i kind of need to spend some time at home.

With only four in my weightclass i was guaranteed two matches. My first match was against a guy who beat me at Grapplepalooza at the start of the month. He took me down with a trip. i established guard and worked for deep half, and eventually got the sweep to level up the scores. Quickly passed guard, took the back when he tried to roll away. Unfortunately i could control enough to get the choke, but did take mount when he tried to escape. He rolled me over from mount when i didnt control his head, and time ran out with me defending a half guard pass. I won 13-2.

In the final, i had a massive brainfart. I pulled guard and went for a flower sweep, but found his tough to shift. With the opening from the attempted sweep he moved for the pass, and i turtled. From turtle i unexplicably looked up to check to time remaining which exposed my neck and he caught me with a clock choke. I will never make that mistake again.

So silver in my weightclass which qualified me for the absolute.

I got a bye in the first round, and again faced my foe from my weightclass in the next round. I caught a belt grip when standing, when for trip and hit a nice Uchi Mata when he defended. From there i passed and then took the back. I couldnt control it though and he eventually escaped. From the scramble i ended up on bottom, and he attempted to keylock me from half guard for the remaining three minutes of the round. I won on points 9-0.

In the next round i went against a smaller opponent. I pulled guard, got a sweep and worked a backstep pass. That's where i pretty much hit the wall. My first match was at 11.30 in the morning, and this was almost 6pm. I basiclaly hung on for the rest of the round, scrambling to top and defending attemped chokes. I won 5-0.

In the absolute final, i fought the lightest guy in the competiion. He's a tough and technical fighter and way above my level at the moment. He armbarred me after two minutes.

So silver in the absolute to go with the silver from my weightclass.

Next stop is the Irish open in April. Need to get in more mat time, and work on my metcon (prowler/rower/high tempo sparring). I also need to rehab my left shoulder because i have some serious pain there from an impingement. Hard couple of weeks ahead.

As you know, with some of the judo TDs you end up in guard or half guard more readily. I try to favour the ones where you either land in side or pass to side before opponent recovers. So, osoto/kouchi over ouchi , harai over uchi (a perfect uchi lands in side, but I often get tangled into half)
But in saying that, I never really consider the scoring aspect, but simply where i'd rather be. At this point scoring for me is something to decide matches, not a tactic to win matches. Reading your play by play above, it dawned on my that TD to side is worth 2 pts, but TD to half and then pass is worth 5. This is probably a really obvious observation.

Do you think here is any merit is actively aiming to land in a weak guard, so you can pass for extra points. Or does the positional advantage worth more due to the times you get stuck in guard/half guard?

If it's decision between landing in top half or top cross-sides, i'll take top cross-sides every time. You have far more options from there than top half, ie you can submit, mount, take the back, knee on belly. From top half, submissions are rare so you are only looking to pass while the opponent is looking to sweep or regain full guard.
