He made some comparison to the casualties of the US over a 240 year period which is loose enough and apparently the Finnish Civil War in 1918 as a proportion of population killed per month was the deadliest civil conflict until the Rwanadan genocide.

The Finns are a strange lot , but in a way have a lot in common with the Irish . Also, we irish know all about siding with the Germans against the Brits. Does this count in your trivia Raoul. The history is fascinating though (too long a story to go into ) but it’s wasn’t really until after the war the full extent of the Nazi evil became apparent. Today like In a lot of countries at the moment the right wing influence is causing unrest and internal conflict . Strangely enough we had a macabre coincidence concerning our two boys in this regard.



Jesse (in Finland pronounced -Yesse) and Jimi (in Finland Yimi) are my two lads names. During a protest march against the right one protestor was kicked in the head by a right wing nazi type and died . The Kicker and the victim were called Jimi and Jesse. Neither names are all that common in Finland so it was a bit weird to hear that wee titbit. Seems to match their personalities though. One is a gentle people pleaser and the other one will gut you for a chocolate chip cookie.

Yeah, Stalin basically gave them carte blanche to do this. As a form of payback for what the Nazis had done (which was numerically far worse, hence the number of Soviet non-combatant deaths), not that that is a justification...

Interestingly, it wasn't the Soviet frontline units who were mainly responsible for the crimes you mention above, but rather the support and rear echelons.

Russia (USSR) was the first state that came to my mind too. Still think its right, and out in front by a wide margin.


German and USSR signed a non-aggression pact - 1 week before the war. Came out after the war that the talks included secret discussion about how they would split up Poland and surround countries.

When Germany invaded Poland, USSR responded by...invading Poland.
A month later, they released a joint statement.
