What should I know about Taxes in Ireland as relocated poker player

    Hey guys,

This is my first post here and I would appreciated if you can help me with some tips/advice.

I know there is already few threads here (saw one of ''Xerxes'' and would like to hear more from him if he is still active member bc we have similar case) about taxes and stuffs but still did not get what I need to.

Actually I moved from Croatia to here in February and for now got PPS number and will try to open an account next week in Bank of Ireland.
I already been to local accountant to get more infos what should I do and it seems he doesn't know that much (weird) thus he first said I need to declare myself as self-employed and pay 20% at end of year on my net profit as I running my own business but later on (today) when I told him that I spoke with some poker players and they said there is no tax treaty on gamble winnings he changed his story and confirmed what I said.

Now I'm a bit confused do I need to declare anything,do I need to be tax resident and fill some form in Tax office etc.!?
What is my my actually status in Ireland now as I living here for 2 months and have some utility bill and pps number?

edit. what is Voluntary PRSI Contribution and should it help somehow in my case--apply for it and pay (about 700e /year)?

Really appreciate for any kind of help guys and yeah sorry for my english it isn't my native language.

    Cheers,

    0% tax on gambling.

Play away and keep all the loots, nothing needs to be declared.

The general concensus appears to be that there shouldn't be any Irish tax on poker winnings. If you want a degree of certainty based on your own circumstances you should speak with a tax advisor.

You need a Chartered Tax Advisor not an accountant!

I'm going to give you the correct answer, you pay me 50% of your winning and you cover all your own loses.

No tax on poker winnings in Ireland at the moment, but you also have no claim to social assistance if need in the future.

Is this a brag post? Nobody wins money at poker anymore!!!

I think Roundtower used to pay PRSI voluntarily.

Yeah bc still I'm not sure if anyone can tax me (Croatia/Ireland) in case I won some ''big'' money on live tournaments like in Vegas ,thus I'll try to contact some Tax Advisor and ask about my situation anyway.

Not that I know a lot.You aren't taxed. Taxes consolidation act 1997. Too few poker players are professional or profitable I would imagine.

Whether you play full time or on the side no tax. If you were taxed you' be able to write off loses. Same for gambling.
Casinos are taxed so when you pay rake I think. So in a way you pay that way.
But no you don't pay tax on winnings i think anyays.

Most players are hobbyists or part time.

The people running the poker games,ie the casinos, pay the tax on their profits. This covers all players in both Ireland and the UK,who are resident there. That's one of the reasons that so many foreign national poker players are based in these islands. What you win,you keep. No need for declarations to anyone, but her goodself.

All of nothing is not a lot, it's nothing!

So I have one thing in common with all those people, nothing to declare!

I'm sorry I get bored when people speak normal.

And if I did win I wouldn't declare it to 'himself' :-D! As if!

Xerxes only posted 26 times and hasn't been on IPB for almost a year. Would assume no one knows them and they are gone. Try sending a PM to their profile here and they should get an email letting them see the message. Worth a try.

Voluntary PRSI contributions are not an option for you. Would only be if you had worked here before and wanted to keep your pension entitlement.

Social Assistance is the dole or any government payouts for illness, pension etc. I think.

Roundtower is a poster on boards.ie and would have posted on poker there before we moved to IPB. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/member.php?u=33151. Don't know if he's on IPB with a different name or just a boards.ie poster.

                              Good luck.

There are no taxes. You're lucky. Another tip from me, you need to find a good poker site. The most important thing is that it is reliable and secure, and from there you can withdraw money to your card, this is very important. I myself searched for such a site for a very long time, until my best friend, who has been playing poker for more than 5 years, showed this site Admiral Shark non UK casino . Well, since then, we have been playing together and earning money for several years. Yes, sometimes I was unlucky, but sometimes I won so much money that I did not know that this was happening for real. So good luck to you, and I hope you win
